Thirst-buckets, LOOK UP. WE DID IT!

We concluded a very thirsty third season with an absolute dreeeeaaaam of a guest, Mr. Wilson Bethel. That’s right, into our little TAK studio walked the man who plays Dex AKA Bullseye on Netflix & Marvel’s Daredevil. The man who was once a young MC who went by “Fresh”. And perhaps most foundational to our thirst for him: the man who played the needlessly charming Wade Kinsella on Hart Of Dixie.

We are NOT okay.  

What a delightful, funny, thoughtful (and yes, gorgeous) man he is! We could barely maintain our professionalism, tbh. But we did, because as we’ve said before: real bitches do real things. And listen, we covered a lot. Let’s go over a few highlights, shall we? 

Naturally, we started at the very beginning, when young Wilson was into, wait for it, the spoken word poetry scene out in Oakland. What a time to be alive!

Not that we’re complaining but why does Wilson have his shirt off in so many of his scenes? Does it get... cold? 👀

‘The Perfect Breast’ (trust us; it’s a treat)

How does a person prepare to play a killer like Matt Murdock’s counterpart Benjamin Poindexter, and also, did he get GOOD at throwing things at people on (sadly gone too soon) Daredevil?

🎺TAK EXCLUSIVE 🎺: Wilson totally broke his hand in a scene in Daredevil, but he powered his way through the scene and they had to CGI a knife into his next scene cos that shit was broken, fam! 

Wilson LOVES Tom Petty. Come on, Hollywood, make a biopic starring him, you cowards!

Actors are great at convincing us by definition, but how much of Wade Kinsella is in Wilson Bethel, and vice versa?

And speaking of Wade... What, if any, would be the effect of that Wade Kinsella accent on us, two committed thirst experts, live in the studio? Bitch...! You already know.

We repeat: we were NOT okay.

But we laughed a lot, and Wilson was incredibly generous with his time, his stories, his jokes, and his... vocal gifts. We had a great time, and we took some photos, and we even shot a video of the interview (visit youtube.com/buzzfeednews), and we are hoping that we get to see Wilson again, in the studio or on the streets of New York, even, because he is a fun guy and we liked him, okay? MC Fresh forever!

Also in this season finale (we miss you already!) we have brand new Fanfic Wars — but with a twist! Because, you see, it turns out it is really hard to write steamy, suggestive fanfic about someone when you’ve met them and they’ve told you about their dad and their teen poetry! 😩So we decided to write drabbles about a couple of our embarrassing Thirst Objects. The results were...interesting.

THIRST AID KIT | S3E01 | TO THE ONLY BOY WE EVER LOVED

YOU KNOW WE HAD TO DO IT — PETER KAVINSKY, FIRST OF HIS NAME, DRINKER OF YAKULT AND KOMBUCHA, MOVER OF THE POPCORN, BASHFUL HOT TUB WATER-SPLASHER, CHIN SCAR-TOTING, WRITER OF NOTES, PROM KING OF OUR ADOLESCENT LOINS, SEASON THREE OPENER THIRST OBJECT,

WE SALUTE YOU.

Look, it was patently clear there could be no other Thirst Object to kick off our third season, because no one owned the summer quite like Peter Kavinsky and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before did. In this episode, we take a long look at why and how he (and the actor who plays him, Noah Centineo) is so hot. Consider:

Consent is sexy (right down to a physical contract if need be!)

Tender vulnerability? NOTHING HOTTER, BRUH

That whole... Baby-Ruffalo Vibe? EFFECTIVE, SIS

Like, are you fucking kidding me right now

But then we also looked at the movie as a whole. A big part of why the film works so well is because of the source material aka the books written by Jenny Han. We spoke about her creation, and the importance of the casting remaining true to the books, and what it means that Lara Jean is half-Korean, and that she looks looks like Lana Condor and how important it is that she looks and acts like an actual teenage girl in the year of our lord 2018. 

And speaking of that, there was no implicit shaming of Lara Jean in TATBILB, on anything. She did not radically change in order to make herself more “worthy” of Peter Kavinsky’s (or anyone’s) love. Her boundaries were respected, and shifted and grew right along with her, always in concert with herself alone. You can have fun within clearly set boundaries! THIS IS NOT DIFFICULT!

We also touched on the teen movie canon as a whole, and so many other things, not least the absolute truth that the best romantic comedy/fanfic trope in all of the world is the fake relationship trope and you don’t have to argue with us; take it up with your parental figure. 

Naturally, we also brought back the best segment in the whole wide world, Fanfic Wars, interpreted two very different ways this week, so strap in, thirst-buckets!

THIRST AID KIT | S3E08 | A WHOLE YEAR, FAM

WE’RE A WHOLE ENTIRE YEAR OLD. 😭

It’s not everyday Thirst Aid Kit turns ONE YEAR OLD. And so we have an extra special episode here for ya — from southern men to British baes, newbies to Zaddies, french fries to hearty snacks, we tried to show love to all the baes we’ve loved before and we’re thrilled you’ve been along for the ride. We’re talking messages from former guests across the seasons of Thirst Aid Kit, from super-listener thirst-buckets, and from the celebrity world [SPOILER: YES, CHRIS EVANS]. And so many other treats. Grab a chilled drink and a fan and get buckled in! Let’s go!

We began with a real ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Moment where we revealed what goes into our much-misunderstood opening segment, [REDACTED]. We chose some of the most-requested episodes: our very first, starring Andre 3000 (😍), and of course our two patron saints, John Cho, and Keanu Reeves (spoiler: we were drinking cider in that [REDACTED]. Innocent cider!)

Shoutout to every single producer and editor we’ve ever had on Thirst Aid Kit – your flawlessly applied beeps have helped to take our sweet but suggestive little tributes into the realm of filth and joy. Shoutout to Eleanor Kagan, Julia Furlan, Agerenesh Ashagre, Meg Cramer, Megan Detrie, Neena Pathak, TK Dutes, and Camila Salazar. 🤗😘

We moved on to talking about out fave moments from the three seasons of TAK. We all have our faves, but we chose three, one from each season, starting with Oscar Isaac, our Season 2 opening episode. We laughed a lot about just how ridiculous Oscar’s bit in the not-great In Secret? Remember?

Ah, memories!

We also cackled at our over-the-top reaction to that scene in Creed, and how Michael Bae Jordan made us feel like we could tackle our to do lists FOREVER. And then we reminisced about the time Gena-Mour Barrett, The Perv’s Perv, came on the show in our Loony For Toons episode, and went HAM on a) Kovu from The Lion King 2; and b) Winnie the Pooh. Nichole said she enjoyed the way Winnie the Pooh ate honey, and Gena chimed in and said he “gobbles it up.” JESUS CHRIST.

Then of course, we got into one of our listeners’ favorite segments: Fanfic Wars. Between us, we have written more than fifty (50!) short stories over the course of this year, and well, we love writing those drabbles! So we went a little deep on our faves, and what they say about us and and very specific kinks (Bim: men doing housework. Nichole: men doing... housework 👀). We chose from across all the seasons, so! Nichole went back to the John Cho episode. Excerpt below:

He places the bouquet on the bar, and gathers my hand against his cheek. He waits until I return his gaze and says, “maybe we wished on the same star as children. Maybe you’re the princess I died slaying a dragon for in another life. Maybe this is a type of hell where our punishment is knowing we’ll never have another love like this. I don’t know. But whatever I did to deserve you, I’d do it again and again, and again.” The woman behind me lets out a soft, “damn.”

Bim also chose from the first season, picking the drabble she wrote for Andrew Lincoln:

The wave in his hair gets tighter the further back you go, and because he hasn’t had a haircut recently — at my insistence, I have to admit — the curls gather and sit right on his collar, making my hands itch to touch. I must have made a sounds because he turns off the tap before turning to me. His face is a little flushed, from the steam, I presume, and he’s smiling. The smile reaches his eyes but I don’t linger there. Instead I let my eyes rest on one of my favorite features of his: that noble nose.

And there are other drabbles besides!

We also did a very special thing this episode: a MUTUAL WEDDING PROPOSAL. 😭All the best of life and love to Jenny and Henry, who allowed us to be part of their engagement. Thanks for trusting us, and happy married life!

AT LAST: Netflix and Chill with Thirst Aid Kit! That’s right — we held a very thirsty screening of Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before in our very first Netflix and Chill session. Shoutout to the New York office for giving us the space!

There were snacks! 🍿There was kombucha! 🥃 (and also pop sockets, thanks to our friends at KeVita). There was wine too! 🍷And face masks 🧖🏾‍♀️ (thanks to our friends at Glow Recipe). There was also Netflix and BuzzFeed swag!

But wait, there’s more! We were also joined by the New York Times bestselling author who gifted the world with Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky, Jenny Han (she baked cookies!) and also by one of our resident romcom experts, BuzzFeed News’ very own entertainment writer Alanna Bennett, and we discussed all sorts of things (The “meaning” of Lara Jean, how to make seeking consent sexy and NORMAL, what makes TATBILB so effective etc). 

There was a lot of laughter, lots of yelling at the screen (“whoa, whoa, whoa!”), a few tears of joy, and lots of swooning. And a thirsty time was had by all.

THIRST AID KIT | S3E11 | TAK ON TOUR: THIRSTY TORONTO

Y’all. 

It’s true that thirst knows no borders, and there are thirst-buckets all over the world. And we got to witness some of that international thirst in person for the first time — in Toronto!

Yes! We were invited to do a live show at the Hot Docs Podcast Festival, and we packed a bag and two (2) spray bottles and flew over and it was L I T. But don’t take just our word for it; look what cohost of ESPN’s 30 For 30 podcast, Jody Avirgan, said about our live show:

Keith Romer, his cohost, agreed. 

What exactly did we do? WELL, WE’LL TELL YOU.

We took our unique brand of lusting out loud to the Great White North, and were met with all the warmth of our Canadian thirst team. We were ably aided by two fabulously thirsty guests: producer and all-round diamond TK Matunda (who tolerated us when we we affectionately referred to her as “Canadian TK” because of our own OG TK, producer, TK Dutes 😂), who told us all about her crushes: Richard Ayoade, Donald Glover, and Jemaine Clement (spot the theme... 👀). Look at this shit, if you please!

TK gave us one of the quotes of the night, when she said a thirst object had to “ease my mind and ease my muscles.” What a word! 🙏🏾

We also had another guest, the woman who popularized one of the phrases of 2018, “Big Dick Energy”. Yes, Kyrell Grant of the Drunk Feminist Film Collective, shared some of her thoughts on who exactly has that exclusive energy in a game we called “BDE Or Nah” (spoiler: Nafessa Williams? BDE all over), as well as showing us the roots of her own thirst objects, Ezra “Spooky Dick” Miller, and twinkly-ass Stanley ‘The Tooch’ Tucci. 

There were gasps of delight, impromptu dancing on stage, and all the dirty auntie chuckles you could ever want. Plus we did a live [REDACTED] complete with human sound effects, and a live (and lively 👀) Thirst Sommelier thanks to our very up-for-it and very thirsty audience, and of course, live drabble writing and reading in Fanfic Wars (with a twist). Y’all we had a ball. And, as a special exclusive treat to attendees, we gave out tote bags. Fam, we promise” you wanted to be there.

THIRST AID KIT | S3E06 | OUR FAVORITE GENRE IS THIRST

HELLO, THIRST-BUCKETS!

We went to New York Comic Con again this year, didn’t we?!

That’s right — our lovely, hilarious and nerdy friends Cher and Preeti AKA the supremely generous cohosts of the SyFy Fangrrls Strong Female Characters podcast invited us to Comic Con with them! Look at us up in that photo with our close personal Thirst Object friends, Henley shirt-wearing Keanu Reeves and altogether topless Michael B. Jordan!

There was a whole live show (you should listen to the WHOLE THING HERE), and we basically discussed all things fandom and thirst. That was the whole remit. it was great, and shoutout to everybody who came out to listen and watch and yell out their many thirsts – we appreciated it!

That means the format of this week’s show is a little different. Listen well: there’s a short clip from the live show in today’s episode. Thirst Objects were all over the fandom map. There’s a moment where Nichole goes to town describing her one of the thirstiest scenes in True Blood, and we only wish you were there to see her enact it IRL. She got off her stool and e v e r y t h i n g. 🐺💉 Alcide Herveaux, tho!

And Bim? Well, she got a little... enthusiastic when it came to discussion of one man from literature: The Lord of the Rings’ Aragon, son of Arathorn. Bitch! 🚬

This was also a great episode if you’re into The Walking Dead’s Richonne AKA the greatest ship of Bim’s life. We got two Richonne experts to join us from outside the TWD panel at NYCC: Kia, the cohost of the superb podcast, Two Dead Chicks, and Ash aka Tumblr’s own @cake-by-thepound, Richonne fic extraordinaire. We spoke a lot about the secret of Rick’s walk 🤠, his kindness, and also his MOUF, which seems ideal for its true purpose on this earth: kissing Michonne. 👀💦

THIRST AID KIT | S2E09 | KISSING SEBASTIAN STAN

Look, we just wanna [REDACTED] Sebastian Stan all day long. And thrice on Sundays.

In this episode, we talk about Sebastian Stan, the man with a big lust footprint, which is to say that he leaves a mark on you, and you may accidentally catch some detritus in the magnetic sweep of his all-consuming sex appeal... Gather round, thirst-buckets, and let us take you on a journey that will traverse the source of Seb’s undeniable desirability.

Between fits of lustful giggling, we came up with some theories.

Is it his pretty hot douchebag face that he can mold into either something blank and Ken-like or tearful high emotion?

Is it the way he gets all up in your space, TalkingRealClose, right up till the point of actual contact?

Is it his hair, which works at both athlete-short or Bucky-long lengths? 

Or is it that sinful bottom lip (see the gif above), aka the one that makes us look up the recipe for traditional Romanian sarmale?

Now let’s go back to another excellent weapon in his arsenal — that pretty, wilfully blank douchebag face he has the audacity to carry around all nonchalantly. Here it is, put to perfect use in Logan Lucky:

We also discussed Sebastian’s fairly slim CV to date, but how he really seems to be growing as an artist — from turns in TV shows like Gossip Girl, Kings, Political Animals and Once Upon A Time to gritty and (even more) interesting character studies in movies  like I, Tonya via The Bronze and the Marvel movies (where he gives performances that runs the gamut, emotions-wise). But also, look at this murder-strut from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, combined with that waterfall of freshly pressed hair. 

HE KNOWS HE’S FABULOUS. (and like Nichole says in the ep, he really does “throw” his thighs out when he walks! 😋)

We also covered Sebastian’s role choices i.e. going for indie work that might pull him away from traditional roles set aside for men who look like him, and how he seems to be this funny guy who is happy to tell jokes and do his work and just be hot in peace. We can fuck with that, Seb.
