Facts You Need To Know About Dubai's Artificial Rain
The UAE is one of the hottest countries in the world, but it’s not always that way. Dubai has a hot desert climate with an average high temperature of 40°C (104°F). What's more, only four inches of rain fall per year. Dubai is trying to combat the heat and lack of rainfall with artificial rain. It works by using drones to fly along a predetermined path over areas in need of water. These drones release a fine mist from their bellies, giving the appearance of natural rainfall. Here are five facts about this new way of living in Dubai.
What is artificial rain?
Artificial rain is used to increase rainfall in Dubai, and in other arid parts of the world. The method involves artificial clouds, which are started by drones and directed to the ground using GPS. These clouds are treated so that they reflect the sun's light, allowing it to heat up and evaporate. The combination of these two actions help create a phenomenon known as cloud seeding. This makes the clouds grow in number and turn into droplets that fall as rain. Why do people use artificial rain? Artificial rain can save lives. According to BBC News, Dubai is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Up to 40% of the population can’t afford water, causing desert dust and sandstorms to begin plaguing the city. Artificial rain has the power to help reduce dust by up to 90%.
How does Dubai’s artificial rain work?
The intense heat in Dubai and the lack of rain meant that the city was running out of drinking water. With Dubai's population expected to reach 9 million people by 2025, the drought was leading to a potential water crisis. To combat the issue, authorities turned to technology to create artificial rain. This new system is referred to as solar-powered drones. The drones fly along pre-determined paths over water-need areas in Dubai. Each drone releases millions of tiny water droplets. These droplets act as the rain. But Dubai isn’t just using water droplets. The system is loaded with other additives, too. Among the additives is electrolytes, sugar, and other things needed to make the rain water safe for consumption. Can you buy an artificial rain drone?
The health effects of artificial rain
Artificial rain is often touted as a public health miracle, without much evidence behind it. And it turns out, the results of the trials are anything but miraculous. "The effect of artificial rain is negligible," Professor Robert Jackson, chair in Earth system science at Stanford University, told New Scientist. "There's no clear evidence that artificial rain will do anything to improve the UAE's groundwater supply." What about more drought-prone regions? Artificial rain in Dubai isn't the first attempt to fight desertification, even though it may be the most successful. "The technology is not going to be sustainable in South America," says Jackson. We have been using the technique of evaporative cooling for at least 50 years.
Why is Dubai using artificial rain?
There's a three-stage plan to turn this water crisis around. The first step was to install desalination plants to provide fresh water to Dubai and surrounding countries. At full capacity, the plants can provide about five times as much water as the aquifers can support. The second step was the use of robots to create artificial rain. They’re called “anemometric drones,” and they’re automated versions of the methods used to create storms in real life. They’re a combination of water vapor and air pressure. The drones work by being fed data about the amount of rainfall needed for specific parts of the city, and they create the mist automatically. How much rain does artificial rain actually produce? In the first test, the Dubai Municipality made 1,850 litres of artificial rain.
In Conclusion
Dubai has some impressive technological advances, but many of its inventions have failed or have been abandoned. Perhaps the use of artificial rain isn't going to be one of them.
