my friend at book club told me about a wedding she just went to where the groom's name is buzzy, and he was named that because it was his grandfather's nickname. so... i'm stealing that. my original character, buzzy cohen, was named after his grandfather. buzzy is his real name.

SEBASTIAN MORAN'S FAVORITE FILMS, ON LETTERBOXD: sebastian usually falls asleep watching movies, but these are four he stays awake to watch. it's a very odd collection of favorites, but he loves them very much. don't ask him to sing anything from the sound of music (he has a horrible voice).

SETH SHAWKY'S FAVORITE FILMS, ON LETTERBOXD: shawky isn't really a narrative movie-watcher. he likes raiders of the lost ark because it's fun, and he enjoys the da vinci code because it's silly, but he prefers documentaries and shows about archaeological expeditions and history.

buzzy's laugh is like medicine. it's like the first ray of bright sun after an aggressive downpour. it's the relief you feel when you're running out of gas in your car and you finally see a gas station. it's that best feeling, that happiest, brightest sensation. it's buoyant like a balloon, loud and positive and contagious; it's almost guaranteed you will hear his laugh and feel the urge to join in, because it's so full and infectious that it just makes you happy. pure, joyful happiness. when someone asks you what your favorite thing about buzzy is, you will probably say his laugh.

buzzy and shawky are best friends. they've been best friends for years. they are more like brothers than friends; they are always in each other's company, always talking, always connected. you will rarely see one without the other. they complement each other extremely well, balancing out, but also challenge each other to do different things and try to step outside their comfort zones.

buzzy is vivacious, jokey, flirty, brilliant, and charismatic, while shawky is reticent, cerebral, focused, content, and curious. buzzy is the one taking way too many selfies with friends, celebrating, dancing, uplifting everyone around him with his smile, while shawky is off to the side sipping water and chatting quietly with a few people. buzzy is out late exploring cities and trying new things, while shawky is home watching a documentary. when buzzy shows up at shawky's house later that same night, he sits on the couch and rewinds the documentary... while shawky sleeps on the chair nearby.

the two men have a few things in common:

↪ they both love their families, and are very family-oriented people. very close with their parents, siblings, and other relatives. when they are both home in boston, buzzy is with his mom, grandmother, and aunt as they compete in jigsaw puzzle competitions, and shawky is visiting his mom and dad in cambridge helping them out with things around the house. ↪ they are both unbelievably passionate about archaeology, and the preservation and protection of ancient people and their cultures. they care a great deal about museum funding, and want to make sure artifacts get to museums in a legal, responsible way. they hate private art and private collections, and wish everything was accessible to all. ↪ they both grew up going to museums with their parents, which led them down the path of archaeology and history. they have vivid memories of field trips at school, and how much they learned and how fun they were. ↪ they will both ramble endlessly about things they are passionate about, and you can't help but feel inspired when you hear this from them. buzzy is like this 99% of the time (invigorated, enthusiastic, always caring, always passionate) while shawky's passionate rants are rarer, but still special.

these two manage to balance each other in so many ways. there is no romantic inclination between them at all, and never has been; they are simply brothers in archaeology, bonded over a mutual love of history and preservation. their fights and disputes end quickly. they are like peanut butter and jelly — they go together. they are always going to be friends.

buzzy is secretly a huge romantic. he'll lie and say he's surface-level flirting but he's not. he cares, he wants the passionate love and the deep emotions. he wants the super detailed dates. he wants to spoil his partner. when he loves someone, they become the center of his whole world; he is wrapped around their finger.

buzzy in love is really beautiful, but it's also a true demonstration of how his emotions can utterly consume him. he doesn't mean to, of course, but he may end up forgetting about important obligations, appointments, events... at one point he left shawky hanging at a large speaking engagement, forcing the other archaeologist to stumble through an hour presentation by himself. buzzy apologized, of course, but it added a week's long rift to their usually easygoing friendship that buzzy had to make up for with snacks, a documentary movie night, and the promise to do better by his best friend.

buzzy is radiant and sunshine and laughter and crushing hugs when you really need them. he's the biggest, brightest smile and the supportive hand on your back. he's a silly escape room where the countdown getting too close to the end makes him shriek in a way that sends you into a fit of giggles. he's the jokes and silly sounds at 3am in a shared hotel room or tent that keeps you up laughing until tears stream down your cheeks. he's eureka moments. he's the first person you want to see after a scary experience, because he'll instantly make you feel better. he's adventure with levity. he's exploration at its most innocent form. raw and fun and joyous.

that's why they call him buzzy. he's always buzzing, always up and alert and laughing and joking and thinking and puzzle-solving. and i still don't know what his real name is, but that doesn't matter — he's buzzy. he's alive.
