Dodge didn’t really know what to do with that. “As a friend?” He wasn’t stupid. He was pretty sure Heather meant as more than a friend, but he wasn’t going to assume. He leaned against the fence, watching one of Anne’s horses amble around. “I don’t—.” He sighed. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” He wasn’t a good person. And he didn’t want Heather to make a bad decision, especially not with Panic going on. The judges saw everything, even the things you didn’t think they’d see, and Dodge wasn’t going to risk getting Heather caught up in more trouble than she was already in.

Heather blinked. “Right.” She shook her head. Leave it to Ray Hall to say the weirdest things out of the blue. “Are you high?” It was the only explanation she could think of. She wasn’t entirely sure why Ray had decided to give her a compliment, nor was she sure why it made her stomach all fluttery, but she didn’t want to find out. “Or drunk?” She sighed. “I don’t have time for this, so just. Say what you want and then go.”

Dodge wasn’t going to argue with that. He wasn’t entirely sure how he and Ray had gotten locked in here, or why, but he wasn’t at all happy about it. He tried the door again. It was still locked. It didn’t help that the room they were in was barely big enough for the two of them to comfortably move around in. He felt like he was brushing shoulders with Ray every time either of them moved. “Obviously.” He inspected the keyhole as best he could. “Do you know how to pick locks?”

⸻ it was her first day off shift, since she attended the fire that tore through michelle's restaurant kitchen; and while melissa didn't make a habit of checking in on most people after her squad had done their job, she hadn't been able to get michelle out of her mind since that day. concern would grow in melissa's chest each time the other woman popped into her head.

she couldn't help but wonder if it was because it hadn't been the first time they'd met that week; that day at the coffee shop also playing on repeat in her head. so much so, that she'd been able to recall michelle's drink order by heart. she just hoped she hadn't overstepped when she turned up at the restaurant, drink order in hand.

melissa gave an understanding nod. ❛ i mean, what you've been through was really stressful. ❜ she reassured, as her free hand raised to motion toward the kitchen; her other hand still holding onto her own take-out coffee cup. ❛ i'd be totally checked out, if i were you too. ❜ she coated her words with a soft laugh, trying to keep things light.

⸻ she sucked in a shaky breath in response to shauna's question ; it had been a failed attempt to answer, but instead anxiety coursed through her leaving her momentarily speechless. she just wanted to check in. what shauna had been through was a lot for anyone to deal with, on top of her being a teenager and stranded in the wilderness. ❛ i uh , just wanted to see if you were okay. ❜ she half stuttered, as her fingers nervously fumbled together in front of her.
