Doctor Who: Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel
I rewatched this two-part serial on Jodie Whitaker’s birthday, 17 June 2023.
We begin with a man in a wheelchair who wants to progress the development of what the audience will know as Cybermen. We learn very quickly that this is an alternative Earth, with similar people and situations nudged out of sync. There are some poignant moments with Rose and her family, and points made about tech. The tech bits remind me of quite a few Dr Who serials from the 43 years prior to this serial; the ones with tech-bros who work with the Cybermen or other tech with disastrous consequences.
I really don’t like the constant dissing of Mickey. Glad the character came through, but it was really silly for it to take what it did.
As an origin story for Cybermen, it’s pretty good. The new design works quite well, too. And I like that the resistance is a bit on the hodge-podge side.
