The universe is kind, sometimes.
"Shh," she whispers, cradling the little boy in her arms. Children of the void are never infants- always old enough to walk, to play, to work- to cry. She holds him in her arms and sings the song her mother used to sing- (that their mother, technically, used to sing)- and the little boy cries.
She was like this too, only six months ago. Six months of quiet, of wandering. She caught glimpses of other Worlds and the Players that leap between them. She caught glimpses of creation. She wondered, once, what it would be like to have a body.
She knows now, holding the little boy close, the tears in his eyes as starlight, her embrace solid and real, and she kisses him gently on the forehead.
"It's scary out here, all alone, isn't it?" she asks as his breathing hitches.
He nods, pitifully, and presses himself closer. She cradles him, holds him tight, discovers that she has a tail in this half-Player form, and wraps it loosely around his ankle.
"You can hold my hand while you wander," she offers, "would that help?”
“Don wanna wander,” he sniffles.
“Then we don’t have to,” she answers, holding him- an ever precious piece of the universe- tight in her arms, “we can stay right here as long as you need.”
Centuries later, Lucas glares down at her.
“I just- I don’t get it, eon,” he sifts his fingers through his hair and shifts from his cod form to his wolf boy form- his ear-fins slink away and two furry ears sprout out the top of his head. His goggles melt into round glasses. They’re eye-to-eye now with his height change, “you begged me to join this server. Why didn’t you join yourself if you wanted to play?”
“You know how my Code works!” Pigeon answers, flicking her tail behind her. She puts her hands together and begs, “please, Luc! It won’t be forever! You know I can’t stay longer than three sessions!”
“Why is this so important?” Lucas asks, “you tried this with Cad too.”
“That- that’s different,” Pigeon says. There aren’t any gods on Cad, as far as she knows. Or if there are, they aren’t easy to talk to. “Please, Luc. Three sessions. That’s all I’m asking.”
“No, pidge. I’m-” he sighs, “No.”
“They’re- they’re calling us back,” Lucas says. “We can talk later, yeah?”
“Yeah- yeah.” She extends her arms for a hug, to act now, act fast- “thanks for considering.”
He tucks himself into her hug, “no problem.”
She gently nuzzles the side of his head. “I’m sorry.”
Three of Lucas’s allies blink back at her.
“Oh my gosh, hi!” She beams, wings fluttering excitedly behind her, “hi! I’m Pigeon, I’m Lucas’s sister!”
Toothpaste laughs. Kip beams and calls her beautiful, asking where she got her sweater. Kazimir- understandably- doesn’t seem to know what to do with this.
“Wait this is just- a thing you can do?”
Borrow her brother’s body? Lock him up in their now shared mind and keep him from getting out? Unfortunately, yes. But they both need to be here. She finally found out how to make it work.
“Yeah! Sorry, it’s weird,” Pigeon laughs, “it’s just- it’s temporary, Luc is letting me borrow his spot on the whitelist for a while.”
Kaz shakes xyr head in disbelief. “O-okay, alright. This might as well happen.”
