WIP: Lumberjack & Pine

Characters: Jack, Kit

Prompt: “going down the shore”

Notes: Flashback to the kickoff of their road trip habit.

Length: 277 words

One More Year

The beach is mostly deserted now. The transition into off-season swift as the drop in temperature. Kit tucks her phone into her back pocket, then bends to pick up her sandals. She carries them down towards the water and wades in. Jack gives her distance, plops onto the sand and gets lost in the sunset.

They’re seventeen and it’s not the first time a new school year has burst the big gay bubble Jack and Kit built over summer.

“One more year,” Kit says later. She sounds more like herself. Less shaky.

“One more year,” Jack echoes.

The future, for Jack, is a world of unknowns too scary to ponder. For Kit, it’s endless possibilities. The scariest unknown is whether Kit will come back once she’s tasted an escape. It’d be hard to blame her.

They stay until their bodies are all goosebumps and shivering. Jack would stay past her curfew if Kit needed it, but it’s only 10:30 when she pulls into Kit’s driveway.

“Next summer,” she starts as Kit is stepping out. Kit pulls her leg back in and looks over. “Next summer, we should leave town.”

“I am leaving town, bud.” There’s an apology buried between the lines. “We’ll still be–”

“No. That’s not–” Jack tugs at her sweatshirt, unsure of herself. “Before college. Like. I don’t know.” A shrug. “You and me, somewhere not here. A vacation.”

“Anywhere?”

“Anywhere affordable,” Jack stresses, but she’s smiling. “Dream small.”

Kit leans forward, folds her arms on the dash and rests her head on them. She’s quiet. Thinking, thinking, thinking. And then she turns with a bright grin. “We should go on a road trip.”

★ What are Jack and Pine like together?

Grotesquely affectionate, for one. I mean gag theyresofuckingcute!!! Uh Pine is kinda brash in a way that almost just tips over into annoying but then her bubbliness reels her back in toward charming. And Jack is quiet, not stoic nor shy, just a sweet, calming energy // attentive // good listener // also really witty but like you gotta get to level 10 before that unlocks ya feel.

Instantly smitten, no-rules road trip romance. So they each jumped in with both feet. (Though I say “both feet” and it makes me think of how visible disabilities deserve rep and how utterly stoked Jack would be to get a new prosthetic that looks like the cyberpunk one at the end of this post. So that’s something I’ll do research into soon.)

Anyhow. Them together. 

Strings develop because they just click Like That, but the whole this can’t last longer than a week no expectations thing sets them free. They’re goofy and carefree. They waste whole days in bed trading pieces of their lives and tangling limbs. And then the next wandering through unfamiliar woods with their best friends and joie de vivre. 

Pine is talkative and Jack is tactile, and somewhere in the middle they find their groove.

★ What is the Pine Chester Sam friendship like?

They’re so close it feels like they’ve never been apart, even though it’s only been about four years. They all met during freshman year of college. Pine and Sam were roommates. Chester and Sam had a class together. When they started dating, Chester met Pine, got on like a house on fire, and thus the Avengers assembled. Okay, maybe not the Avengers, but they probably do have a name for the squad. 

It’s a really chill friendship?? Lacks in drama and pettiness. Relishes in trust and gaiety (yup picked that word on purpose). There’s sleepovers and taking turns controlling the radio and “here this made me think of you” memes + songs + other kindnesses. Chester never forgets a birthday or a secret. Sam will put their friends before anything and everyone. Pine buys items in threes and always remembers snacks. 

They epitomize I love you and I like you except platonically.

★ What do Chester and Sam think of Jack???

They are fans! Zero offense meant to Pine because they each love her, but Jack getting Pine off their hands meant a couples week in a cozy town. I mean, they did all spend time and get along but Pine wanted to indulge in a summer dalliance and Chester and Sam wanted to indulge in each other. So. Yeah, they’re fans.

★ BONUS:

Jack has people too! Kit and Moose are her traveling companions. Kit is her forever and ever best friend. They go way back to recess and nap time. Moose is her little brother. Kit and Moose are Not a Thing and will never be a thing, just throwing that out there because on the wheel of genre tropes one might expect it. 

Uh, let’s see... Lumberjack and Moose are nicknames Chester and Pine come up with as the siblings are both built like their namesakes. Idk if Moose is going to get a ~real name~ I’m so attached to Moose I wouldn’t know what else I’d call him. Kit is very small, very loud, and very funny. Moose is hog-wild and prone to sticking his foot in his mouth. But he’s young and he’s doing his best and I love him.

Aptitude

1. what are your oc’s natural abilities, things they’ve been doing since young?

Jack is naturally athletic and Pine is naturally artistic, and they’ve each worked really hard for a very long time to further hone their respective abilities. Pine is also funny as hell and good at making friends, and that charisma feels like it qualifies as a natural ability. And Jack’s an amazing dancer!

2. what activities have they participated in?

Jack does lots of physical activity?? It’s feeling one-note giving similar answers, but anything that keeps her body up and running is her ultimate jam. She’ll do walks for whatever causes, she likes volunteering with kids, she’s a youth soccer coach probably, she’s also super into competitive sports and taking home prizes.

Pine is not an activities person. You gotta bribe her or drag her screaming. The only activities she likes are movie night sleepovers with her best friends. Does a community garden count? That too. And road trips of course.

3. what abilities do they have that they’ve worked for?

Jack’s confidence is hard-won. Just the ability to say “no”—if it’s not clear, she’s a people pleaser—changed her whole life.

Pine has done a lot of work on her ability to be patient. Spoiler: she’s still not very good at it! but she’s trying and that’s what matters. Also she’s good at close up magic but she doesn’t tell people that.

4. what things are they bad at?

Jack is a terrible singer and she’s super shitty at multitasking.

Pine is bad at tons of stuff! Poker, crochet, cooking/cleaning/adulting in general, thinking before speaking, lying, math. The list goes on!

5. what is their most impressive talent?

Jack - standing backflip

Pine - drunkenly burping the alphabet backwards

Comfort

1. how do they sit in a chair?

Jack sits like she’s gotta make room for all her bde

Pine makes any and all efforts to sit on Jack’s lap

2. in what position do they sleep?

Together? Pine strikes me as the type to starfish while sleeping so Jack probably spoons her just to keep her in place.

3. what is their ideal comfort day?

A comfort day for Jack is wrapping herself in big comfy blankets and hiding out in her room reading all day, only resurfacing for snack breaks.

For Pine, getting to sit outside in nice weather and spend hours lost in her art is the ideal. Especially if the day ends with Chester and Sam and a marathon of whatever show they’re into.

4. what is their major comfort food? why?

Jack - baked mac and cheese, because it’s her favorite thing her mom makes and her mom always makes it just for her

Pine - vanilla cupcakes with lots of frosting and sprinkles, because she’s got a massive fkn sweet tooth

5. who is the best at comforting them when down?

Jack will let anyone step in to comfort her. The best at it is her dad. Second best is Kit.

Sam is best at comforting Pine. Like they can be really similar, and Sam just being there is comforting.
