A DELETED SCENE: ALECTO CARROW & REGULUS BLACK ---> HIS FIRST SOLO MISSION
The Dark Lord summoned her to his office late in the night when all movement quieted and nothing seemed to stir. Alecto had little time to make herself presentable, the Dark Lord cared not for tardiness, but she couldn't look disheveled. It was unthinkable. Her heels echoed in the quiet manor that mirrored the rapid beat in her chest. She did not fear death, but the shaking of her palms spoke of other things that she feared at the hands of their leader. The life of a Death Eater was never secure.
"Ah Ms. Carrow, lovely Alecto, pleased that you could join us." The Dark Lord charmed with a smile that might have been warm had it not been for the cold glint in his eye.
She dropped down into a curtsy and inclined her head before taking a proper look around. Amycus would be horrified to hear that she had been summoned in the dead of night when he was on a mission; in fact, she was sure he could feel the burning sensation in his wrist. Just like she could feel her mark burning since his departure.
"My lord, it is my honour,"
His smile turned almost snake-like as he gestured to the other person in the room, "Regulus, here, is finally ready for his solo assignment. An honour that you remember I'm sure Alecto." He glanced up to garner her reaction.
Their eyes met and she could feel the probing of him in her mind. She opened up her walls and maintained a clear sense of thought in order to keep him from seeing too much. It always hurt to let him behind her well-kept barriers. And her first solo assignment wasn't fondly thought of outside of this room. Jaded. Broken. Tarnished. These were the pieces of her once innocent soul and with every assignment, she could feel herself breaking again and again without ever getting put back together properly. Her father created the monster, but the Dark Lord allowed it to flourish in the carnage and destruction he desired. No, her first solo assignment was not fondly remembered.
"Now, I apologise for the late notice, but I thought who better to oversee Regulus' success than Alecto Carrow. You and Amycus were instrumental in Barty's initiation after all." The Dark Lord's smile is cruel, but Alecto only nods and coyly smiles back at him. She knows how to play the game after all. He thought himself above the politics and the societal games, yet absorbed it like a sponge. The Dark Lord liked power as much as the next, "Well the hour grows late, you are both dismissed."
Alecto dropped down into another curtsy before sauntering out of the room. Amycus always teased her that she look like she was stalking prey. Regulus followed soon after and she wrapped her hand around his arm, her nails carving into his robe-covered arm, and apparated out of the manor. They landed in the Carrow Manor with a quiet pop. He trembled ever so slightly. Her eyes clouded with worry and she gently pushed him into a chair placed precisely in the entrance.
Alecto kneeled to his level, her eyes locking with his eyes and her hand clutching his hand, and whispered, "Breathe darling, just breathe." There was confusion and insecurity swirling in the depths of that sweet gaze of his. Eyes that had always made her want to protect him.
"I-I c-can't do this 'Lecto, I can't do this, I just can't." He blurted out with a tremble in his voice --rambling through his nerves and frustration and anxiety -- "I'm going t-to d-disappoint everyone cause I c-can't do w-what he asked me."
Alecto raised her eyebrow at him, "Disappoint? Who the bloody hell gives a damn. This is your mission. The only person who's opinion matters is yours Regulus," Her tone softened and she rubbed her thumb soothingly against his hand, "What you have to do is going to haunt you for the rest of your life. It's going to never stop plaguing you, but you'll do it and you'll learn to survive."
It was all any of them could do. Death had a way of making his presence known and the Dark Lord cared only about their usefulness. She learned that the hard way. Most of them did.
Alecto released his hand and stood up, her hands smoothing out her Black Death Eater robes, "Well I'm ready to finish this task when you are darling. Then we can drink ourselves to oblivion. At the very least if I'm unconscious then Amycus won't be worrying."
Regulus nodded, swallowing his nerves down, and put on his silver mask trying to ignore the pit in his stomach. Instead he focused on Alecto, "Why would Amycus be worrying? Isn't he in Germany?"
She blinked blankly at him, unconsciously scratching her inner wrist, but just shook her head, "Oh don't listen to me, I'm just rambling. Now are you ready?" It wasn't that she meant to dodge the question or even keep it from Regulus, but their linked tattoos were something special -- something that's only theirs.
Regulus took a deep breath, his eyes searching hers for the confidence that he needed, and smiled -- a little shaky but better than before, "Yes, I can do this."
"Of course you can darling," Alecto affirmed with a gentle kiss on his mask-covered cheek, "What is it that Narcissa always says? Oh right, 'You're a Black and Black's can do anything they want.'" She smirked at him before, with a silent incantation, her own silver mask covered her face.
"She might be speaking only of herself." Regulus commented with a short chuckle.
Alecto nodded with a shrug, "Well Cissa does have a rather high opinion of herself."
"Don't we all?" Regulus asked as he offered her his arm.
"It's only the truth. And after all, our Mothers always told us never to lie." Alecto quipped as she linked her arm through his and waited for the inevitable darkness of side-along apparition.
They landed in an empty field, a few blocks away from the nearest town, and Alecto quickly threw on her hood in order to keep her hair from attracting too much attention. The night air was thick with tension that she sensed in her bones. Something was bound to happen tonight.
"Regulus, you're on point for this mission. I'll be watching your back but you need to do this. This is your mission." Alecto whispered, her eyes darting around the empty space looking for any bystanders or even worse a member of the Order, to him.
"A member of the Order is supposed to be here waiting on information," Regulus replied, there's something in his voice that alerts Alecto, as they crouched behind a tree, "W-what if it's Sirius? I c-can't do it if it's Sirius,"
Fucking Sirius Black. Between Narcissa and her, they had cleaned up the broken mess that Sirius had left Regulus in. And somehow it always led them back to his selfish arse.
Alecto frowned at her friend and shoved him so that his back was against the tree, "Listen here Regulus. He's a selfish arse who doesn't deserve to see the light of day. But tonight, you're not Regulus and he's not Sirius. Tonight, you're a Death Eater and he's an Order member. So you're going to go out there and get that information before they do. No matter what you have to do, no matter who you have to hurt."
Regulus shook his head vehemently and Alecto feared for his fate, feared for what will await her dear friend if he failed, feared that she will never see him again. But then she noticed the glint in his eye. The narrowed way his eyes focused on her; the unwavering determination that settled in them and all the fears disappeared. This was the Regulus that she did not need to protect, this was the Regulus that would do anything to redeem this family.
"Follow me Alecto." He cast a disillusion charm over them and started off towards the silent filthy town.
Once they were closer to the town, Alecto spied their target and she darted behind a brick building. She was only to support Regulus as she silently apparatus to the top of the building that would allow her to act if necessary.
The street was quiet. The man fidgeted underneath the dimly lit street lamp and Alecto wanted to laugh at his inability to be conspicuous. Regulus only needed to stun their target and bring him back to the Dark Lord before an Order member appeared. She glanced over at the street over and noticed another figure standing there; the hairs on the back of her neck stood up and she swore. It was a trap.
Alecto scanned the area for any other potential Order members. They had to be Order members. But Regulus was moving, his wand out, towards the first figure and Alecto couldn't stop him. She watched him in horror as a jet of red shot towards him after he had stunned their target. Unknown. Unnamed. She apparated down to Regulus and silently cast a shield charm over his body.
"Get the bloody fuck up Regulus." Alecto screamed panicking from the worry that coursed through her. He needed to be okay. He needed to be safe. He needed to anywhere but here.
"Death Eaters!" Came the scream from down the street.
Alecto swore profusely and aimed her wand at Regulus, "Ennverate."
He awoke, clutching his chest, and stared at her before clambering to his feet, "Its a trap. They were waiting for me."
"You're an unlucky sod clearly. But come on, let's get this bastard back to the Dark Lord." Alecto teased to hide her anxiety as she blocked the spells coming their way.
Regulus shot his own hexes at the Order member heading towards them and shook his head, "What if he isn't the target? Alecto, you need to wake him in the alley and search his mind."
Alecto growled under her breath as she cast on last hex at the figure almost upon them, "Get rid of that Order member. "
She turned to the target and dragged him by his inner arms into the alleyway, giving her enough cover to revive him -- his wand already tucked in her boot -- and she sneered at him when he gasped for breath, "Don't worry sweets, this won't hurt a bit. Legilimens."
He screamed at the mental invasion, but she ignored the sounds and began to riffle through memory and thoughts. His mind was a mess and clearly no one had taught him to organize his mind or protect himself. Sturgis Podmore. Order Of the Phoenix member. Gryffindor. She cast aside information that wasn't important or vital until she stumbled upon a memory from this afternoon. He was of little consequence, but the package in his pocket was of a different matter entirely. She extracted herself from his mind and cooed, her hand patting his cheek, "I hate to break it to you sweets, but we won't be needing you after all."
Alecto accioed the package from his pocket, her eyes glinting impishly when he stared at her in horror, and said, "Thanks for being such an easy target."
She stunned him again and hurried out of the alley just in time to see Regulus win the duel. If this was her mission, she would have tortured the man and then wiped his memory. But this was Regulus' mission and she would follow his lead, "What do you want to do with these two?"
"Do we need them for information?" Regulus asked, his wand hand shaking ever so slightly.
She shook her head, "No, it's in here." Alecto tossed him the package and tugged off her hood with a sigh, "I could wipe their memories or we could just tie them up and leave them here or we could take them back to the Dark Lord."
Regulus swallowed thickly, "Would he want them?"
"This one here is an idiot and is merely a messenger. I'd say that the Dark Lord could do without their incompetence." Alecto shrugged.
"Then let us leave them tied up and stunned."
Regulus wasn't really cut out for this line of work. He hadn't been brought up to be a monster nor did he choose to become one like little Barty Crouch Jr. And sometimes Alecto wished he hadn't told all those months ago that he wanted to be a Death Eater. Sometimes she wished she could protect him from it all. But she can't and so he'll just have to survive like the rest of them; at the very least he didn't have to kill tonight, at the very least his soul hadn't become completely tainted.
When they landed back in the safety of the Carrow Manor, a brief stop to deliver the information to the Dark Lord, Alecto tossed off her mask and grinned, "Well let's get pissed. I think we've earned it darling."
