Lavender was feeling better. Mostly. At least the pain in her head was gone, but she was still walking a little unsteadily, and she could feel the dull ache of a bruise forming on her back. It would be nasty. Next time she had a chance to sleep, she’d have to sleep on her side for her. But not the side she’d fallen on when she was tackled. Maybe she should just try to sleep standing up.
As she wandered, with the scythe held firmly in her hand, she felt at least somewhat more confident in her safety, too. Even if she alone wasn’t scary, the sharp blade in her hand was terrifying. It even kind of scared her to be holding it, but she knew to keep it pointed firmly away. She kept to the wall of the city, moving slowly and constantly looking around. Right now, all she cared about finding was some water. As the buildings around her grew to look more depressing, she was considering turning around.
But the walls changed. It was something strange, that she could see slanting in the distance. She was so absorbed in the shift in structure she didn’t realize someone else might hear her ask, out loud, “What the hell?”
