the wrong person for the job // davey & mary
There was something about watching Davey eat lunch alone. It wasn’t that it was wrong exactly. Seventh year schedules being what they were, many of them had to find the time to shove a few bites into their mouths while their nose was buried in a book to cram in some last minute studying. It would have been easy enough to pretend that’s what was happening now and continue on her way. But there was something about the image that just wasn’t right. Especially considering, well, the fight.
It felt weird that she knew such a personal thing that had happened between Davey and Dorcas, but then most of the school did. The ones who weren’t there to witness it themselves in the entrance hall heard about it within the day from the whispers and gossip. Mary was one of the ones who saw it happen firsthand, wishing she was anywhere else but unable to look away.
She was unable to look away once again as she now watched him, accompanied only by his own loneliness. A few times she started to make her way to the Gryffindor table only to stop and throw a few more glances over to the boy again. If anyone was watching her, they must have thought she was losing her mind.
Finally, with a determined head nod followed only by one more false start, she made her way over to where he sat. “Hey, Davey,” she said, putting in every effort to not sound like someone talking to a crying child. Make sure her pitch wasn’t too high, make sure her vowels weren’t too drawn out, make sure her eyes weren’t filled with pity. “Care for any company? Don’t want to interrupt if you’re really invested in this book, but, well, I will call you a nerd.”
