Baelfire watched his step-father get down to his level by taking a seat on the edge of the ship. The teenager was not in the best state of mind to listen to him. As he had stated before, Killian never made him ANY promise. Any promise he ever made was to his Mother, not to him. Never did anyone make him a promise. Not to be a good parent to him. Not to be there for him whenever he needed them…
Rich, chocolate eyes reflected ENDLESS amounts of emotions. Anger. Betrayal. Hurt. In truth, the list went on– the list of emotions Baelfire couldn’t hide any longer.
I knew your mum was a packaged deal when I met her, and I wouldn’t have married her if I didn’t want both of you.
Baelfire’s heart JOLTED in a sudden sensation of feeling. Someone wanted the both of them? …This was new. Normally, when people wanted his mother, it seemed like they only ever wanted her, never the two of them. Killian, he said so himself they were a package deal… He understood that more than any other man Baelfire could have picked out for his mother. [ [ T h a t ] ] was different, to him. Very different. Then Killian’s promise continued on and Baelfire found himself on the verge of tears.
I’ll never leave your mum, and I’ll never leave you.
The boy ONLY liked Killian for his mother. Killian made her smile, he made her HAPPY. The last time he had seen his mother smile [ [ t h a t ] ] much was a long time from then. She never used to smile that much, not that Bae ever saw. She always seemed to look sad… But now, she has a light inside her eyes again, all because of his step-father. That was the most amazing thing Baelfire could EVER ask for. He’d be abandoned by his parents all over again, if it meant keeping that smile.
He wasn’t a perfect boy, he knew that much. He could tell from how he made Killian feel that he DEFINITELY wasn’t a perfect person. He wanted to utter an apology, but couldn’t fit it in. His chest was heavy as the following words slipped into the space between the pirate and the boy. This promise… THIS promise was the promise Baelfire ALWAYS longed to hear since he was told that he would have a new parent. THIS promise was what made Baelfire realized…
I am telling you this now, so that you know it. This is my promise to you; I’ll not let harm come to you–by my hand or by another’s, I offer to you my ship as your safe haven for the rest of your days, and I will love you as my own until my last breath. I made this same promise to your mother, but today, out loud, I am making it to you.
…THIS was the moment Killian became his father.
Drip. Drip. Tears fell from Baelfire’s rich, chocolate eyes onto the wooden deck of the Jolly Roger. “Thank you..” Baelfire whispered, lowering his eyes to the floor. His heart was heavy, but it also felt WHOLE. A feeling that was, in truth, missed by the boy for so long. He had a father again… A father he trusted enough to know he would not let him go….
… That’s ALL he ever wanted.
Without thinking, or much time to hesitate, Bae took a couple steps forward and [ [ f l u n g ] ] his arms around his father’s neck, burying himself amongst the leather coat and cotton undershirt. Fingers clutched tight to his jacket, feeling himself let go– tears and all.
