Easy Silence
busses, cars, and airplanes leaving burning fumes of gasoline and everyone is running and I come to find a refuge in the
It was quarter past seven, the wind was howling and the raining was bashing against the roof and front screen of car. The lights of Katelyn’s bookstore were still on and from her position across the road she could see the blonde busying herself with a few last minute chores before she closed up shop for the night. The woman’s last customer had been over an hour ago and the brunette silently wondered why Katelyn kept her store open so late. Of course, seven-thirty wasn’t exactly late, but it was for a used bookstore. She made a mental note to bring the topic up sometime--if she ever survived tonight that was--and stored it away for later, the thought of the woman working so late, alone, on campus, surrounded by crazy, caffeinated students did not bode well with her.
Selene had been sitting in her car for just over forty-five minutes now, the weather hadn’t lessened up one bit, and she used that as an excuse for not getting out of her car and actually approaching the woman. Instead she stayed in her car, and spied from her position like a creepy stalker, who really, really, needed to get a hold of herself. This was not healthy, but after last nights conversation, the plans they had made, Katelyn’s parting comment, she found she really couldn’t wait until Wednesday to see the blonde. She had tossed and turned all night, and had been incredibly distracted to the point of having to cut her class short. It really had been becoming and problem, and the only solution she was able to think of we pushing their ‘plan’s’ forward a night. Kateyln wouldn’t mind surely, she had told herself, but as she sat there in her car, squinting through the pouring down rain, she really didn’t feel as confident and as sure of herself as she had earlier that day.
Glancing side ways at the bag full of now cold Chinese, she let out a shaky laugh and shook her head. Had she gone mad? What was she doing? This was ridiculous. But even as those thoughts filled her mind, she still couldn’t find it in her to start the car and drive away. She wanted this--no, needed this, and she prayed that Katelyn felt the same way.
Spying movement out of the corner of her eye, she watched with wide eyes as Katelyn neared the door, one hand moving to fiddle with her glass and the other reaching out towards the door. Was it seven-thirty already? She looked down at her watch.
“Shit.”
Moving to grab the plastic bag, but deciding that turning up with nothing was better than turning up with cold food, she snatched her hand back before darting out of her car, instantly becoming soaked. She really should have thought to grab her jacket, but as she rushed across the street, hair sticking to her forehead, she found she just didn’t care so long as she got to the door before Katelyn turned away.
And she did, just as Katelyn turned the ‘We Are Open’ sign around to the ‘We Are Closed’ sign. The blonde’s gaze was directed off to the right, and with the blown street lamp, she doubted the blonde had seen her approach. Not wanting to frighten the woman, she knocked gently, her head ducked to keep the rain from her vision.
She really had gone mad.
Before The Rising Sun We Fly
Ten forty-five pm. Selene had only been home for forty five minutes and in total she had checked her phone sixteen times just in case she had missed Katelyn's call. She hadn't. Not even when she had left her cellphone on her night stand while she washed her face and changed into her nightwear in the bathroom. The minutes seemed to tick by and after half an hour of watching the clock on her phone, the brunette had decided that if Katelyn was going to call, she would call. So taking a pen from her night stand, she picked up the large book that sat on her bed side table and started to jot down her weekly to do list. She had just finished writing her fifth bullet point--a reminder to purchase a light bulb for the down stairs toilet when her phone started to vibrate heavily against her lap. The classic 'ring, ring' sounding throughout her bedroom. Not wanting to seem to eager, even if she had quickly dropped the pen and book and reached for the phone, she let it ring four times before she swiped her thumb over the green circle to accept the call. "Katelyn."
Tortured, Tangled Hearts
Katelyn McKnight’s sexuality had never been something that Selene had actually ever thought about. Up until their heated make-out session in her kitchen, the immediate assumption had always been that the blonde was straight, just like she was, but when the blonde had walked in on the arm of a tall, incredibly attractive, female, redhead, the professor had found herself wondering whether she actually knew the blonde at all.
The faculty party that Selene was currently attending was being held at her fellow Dean’s house, Professor William Sachs to be exact. The man was notoriously known for his fun loving attitude and his calm demeanor, naturally Selene despised him. The short, stubby man forever got on her nerves with his apparent need to make his gloomy colleague laugh. He had yet to succeed of course, and as of yesterday, Selene was pretty sure he thought her physically unable to.
She had been able to avoid him the first half hour--and originally that was as long as she planned to stay--but as she turned away from staring at the giggling blonde attached to who she knew remembered was a fellow faculty member, she found herself unintentionally catching the gaze of William.
“Oh dear god.” She mumbled to herself as she watched the man push his way through the crowd, heading straight for her. Snatching up a flute of champagne from a waiter who passed her, she threw it back and steeled herself for the inevitable.
“Selene, Selene, Selene.” The man drawled as he sat down in the chair across from her, trying to cross his legs but eventually giving up when he struggled to lift one over the other. “It pains me to know that you have been sitting here all alone.”
Not even bothering to be polite and meet his gaze, she kept hers firmly plastered on Katelyn, not willing to let the woman leave her sight. “Not all the time. Geoffrey was here before.”
The man simply scoffed in response, obviously not willing to accept Geoff is suitable company for her. “I do apologise for not being able to get over to chat sooner, but as the host, I have to divide my attention evenly.”
She had no idea why the man thought he had to explain himself to her, but she managed a stiff smile and a nod in response. Hoping that if she stayed quiet he would just leave.
The man sat back in his chair and followed her gaze after he realized that the woman before him wasn’t about to strike up a conversation with him. Once he landed on the exact thing that had his fellow professors attention he grinned. “Friend of yours?” He asked.
Having nearly forgotten, or at least did her best to pretend, that the man was not there, she jumped in her seat and spun around to stare at the physics professor as if he’d grown a second head. “I beg your pardon?”
“The blonde.” He replied with a nod towards Katelyn’s general direction. “I haven’t seen her around campus, so I’m guessing that she does not work at the university.”
She frowned heavily as she stared at Geoffrey, wondering what it was exactly that he was trying to achieve with his questioning. She played along though, answering with a simple, ‘yes’.
“Ahhh.” He supplied after a few seconds of blatant staring at Katelyn and the redhead, “Well it looks like she’s enjoying herself, but then again, that may have something to do with the way the woman is currently looking at her.”
Snapping her head around, Selene did her best to suppress a growl as she watched the redhead stare down rather affectionately at Katelyn. Not bothering to excuse herself or worry about the rather gleeful look that had appeared in William’s eyes, she stood suddenly and stalked towards the duo, a heavy scowl on her face.
“Good evening Katelyn.” Selene drawled, her gaze immediately falling on the blondes companion, she suppressed a sneer, “Fancy seeing you here.”
