“Yeah, well, for what it’s worth, the feeling’s mutual, Lucifer..”
When Lucifer says something that feels like it tears through seven layers of repressed trauma all at once all Jamie can do is usher a harsh “Fuck you.” and leave without resolving the argument.
His anger clouds his better judgment and he enters a place in his mind that mirrors his surroundings; it’s a bit desolate and way too loud to be a place any sane person would actually enjoy wallowing in. He brushes against someone who reacts by shoving him backwards into an even more solid body. This is one predicament that really isn’t his fault, it’s just a wrong time wrong place type of thing. The men recognize him and one of them grips him by the collar of his blue coat and pulls him up against themselves. He swallows down fear and keeps eye contact, but adrenaline from his fight with Lucifer is still running loose in his veins and the “Get your fucking hands off me, asshole.” Escapes his mouth no quicker than his immediate regret sinks in.
The back alley smells like trash and stale rain water and he feels like a dog being dragged into it by the nape of his neck. The burlier guy whips him around by the fabric of his coat like a rag doll and the space between Jamie’s shoulders collides with the corner of a dumpster. He groans in pain, but he’s used to worse. “I didn’t mean anything by it—,” he can’t talk himself out of the insult fast enough, but he makes an abrupt gesture of innocence by raising his palms towards them and feels his feet leave the ground. The world spins on itself and the wind in every little pocket of his lungs is forced out leaving him breathless and unable to inhale as he stares up at them. One kicks him in the side of the head and he feels it radiate down the side of his jaw while the other gets a few sucker punches in while he’s still down.
There’s racket near one of the back doors and they both take off running, leaving Jamie to gather his senses and try to make any sort of sense of what just happened. How does one get beat up at 5pm on a Thursday just from bumping shoulders incorrectly?
He’s halfway home when the universe turns its back on him even further. There’s an immediate downpour, sheets of cold water rain down and soak Jamie in a way that makes him look even more pathetic than he already feels. “Please tell me things can’t get any worse than this.” He spits the plea out between cracks of thunder. But they can, they always can. He knows this only because he spots Lucifer coming around the corner of the empty office buildings and he has no other choice but to tuck his head downwards and keep walking as if he doesn’t see him.
