(not american just measuring system nerd) despite my immeasurable love for the metric system i also have appreciation for base-12 and base-60 numbering systems, so "12 inches is a foot", despite being horrible for everything else, makes it pretty easy to divide a foot-long thing in 4 or 3 pieces that don't have too many decimal places, which was probably very useful for craftspeople before the metric system was invented. Also, to reply to you, i think that the purpose of a yardstick is to be specifically a yard long, sure 1m is great but then it's not a "yardstick" PS: favorite measuring system fact: a fathom is a unit of measure of depth (of a water body like a canal or a lake), so when someone says "i can't even fathom that", they mean they can't get to the depth of understanding necessary to imagine the thing
I think part of why I get so frustrated is I have ADHD brain which has absolutely no way of handling math in any form unless it is in round numbers. On top of this I CANNOT do multiplication AT ALL unless it is in round numbers. So what my brain does when I see not-round numbers is to round them off, then try and do the math, then subtract the extra numbers to try and get it back to the original number. But I almost always get confused along the way and then try and figure out how much I need to subtract to get it back to the original number. And then to do that I have to round off THOSE numbers etc etc
The metric systems is 1mm - 100mm = 1cm - 100cm = 1m - 1000m = 1km
It's a fucking DREAM system where I don't have to do any kind of math for shit because everything just WORKS
0 = freezing. 100 = boiling.
Also what the fuck is a yard and also I don't want to know how long it is because it's not a meter.
I have a "yard stick" myself.
It's a solid steel ruler.
It is exactly a meter long.
