MONDAY 15TH FEBRUARY. THE TOWER, FEMENIAS ENERGY HQ. Rafael’s news, traitorous in nature yet drenched in his forgiveness as if to wash away the sins, sits heavy in Kitty’s mind throughout the morning. It isn’t often that she says more than necessary to Ikki, never one to seek him out unless it’s for a scheduled Virtue-Dominion meeting or to carry out a job — far from ideal given their partnership, yet they’ve nevertheless managed to get on with their respective roles so far. Today is different. She banks on Ikki being out for lunch, gliding her way through security at The Tower with a well-placed grin, a reminder of exactly who she is, and a white lie about needing to do something for Raf ( which is true, in a sense ). One security personnel falters, hesitant until she threatens to call her cousin: the turnstile light flashes green.

Rafael Snr.’s office is neater than usual. No cigar case clutters the desk.. A sleek laptop sits where his preferred older model would be. She strolls in like she belongs there, unbothered by the wary glances of members of staff who know better than to venture into their acting-CEO’s territory. Kitty watches their expressions shift as she rolls the privacy blinds down over the glass windows separating the king from his court, pausing to press a loving fingertip to a framed photo of Rafael and Alejandra. Satisfied, she settles into the leather desk chair and kicks her heels up onto the mahogany surface in wait. It’s not long— predictably, Ikki is working to his usual meticulous and well-timed schedule. “Afternoon,” the Virtue drawls, gaze pinned on Ikki like the thumb tacks holding up various ocean maps at the far end of the office, small red dots detailing the locations of various oil rigs. “Take a seat, Ikki. We need to chat.” A smile slices across her mouth, sharp and unforgiving. “Want to take a lucky guess at what our topic of the day is? Here’s a clue: rats.”
