Watson graduated. She wasn’t entirely sure she knew how–one day she was at her mentor’s place eating peanut butter sandwiches and carefully waving together wires and timers on demand. The next she woke on a rough brown futon in a one bedroom apartment.
The futon was in the den, there was an electric kettle on the counter, and the bedroom was empty save for boxes of wires and self-stable explosive material. There was no note. When she found the laptop she didn’t get answers but she did find jobs.
Jobs were things she could do. What she couldn’t do was the rest of t.
Peanut butter sandwiches. Every night. She looked at the job offers, tried the easy ones first, then the more complicated. No one asked her to dress up and play spy. She preferred the bombs and often ducked behind corners and tried to watch their aftermaths.
Finding herself outside of work, outside of training, was harder and came in bits. She ducked into a movie theater at ten am in June after getting spotted by someone and came face to face with cartoons. A Goofy Movie–had she seen this before? The Lion King–she remembered this one.
Sailormoon came later. She stole a nonwork laptop and started Streaming what she might make into a personality. Animations to Dramas to Tellanovellas and Bollywood. She didn’t think she could ever be so dramatic but there was delight in watching the stories play out.
She watched episodes and ordered takeaway of what the characters ate, then watched them again. Perhaps that is how she thought of making friends by taking hits and began to daydream what it might be like to kiss someone on her old brown futon now surrounded by fairy lights she never had to turn off.
