She was almost certain now that this place was haunted — or she was hexed to be chased down by her ghosts, for some unknown reason to her. No witch had fallen dead at her feet recently. Perhaps something that had to change — maybe when the town was rid of some, those phantom faces would poof out of existence too.
That face — brought back memories she couldn't fully remember; perhaps a smell, or a taste, or her own voice that sounded different then. Softer, younger —
The longer she stared, more fragments of a shattered mosaic kept coming together. The other woman's name, the sound of metal bars — a plea, that had been answered and a punishment for daring to grant the weak mercy. No, not mercy — freedom. You can either be feared, or be gone. She didn't understand the meaning of it then. Hated that voice, and who it belonged to.
When Anika stood up from her bar stool and approached Codie, a man was already sliding next to her. "Seat's taken." shot out, before the man could fully settle down. He towered over her. Then scoffed at her unyielding frame and moved past the hunter, through the crowd of people. Mossy hues found the woman again, as she allowed herself to take the seat that had been vacant all along.
"You've made it out." she spoke. "How long's it been?"
