A little Lark and Umami, having some fun in the back of the shop and being difficult to post any damn where
The Flames of Expectation
Made for my writing comics class! A bit more of a proof of concept than a full comic to me but happy with the final result and happy to be done with it! :>

“Hey, Lark! Your dinner looks yummy.” The younger man’s greeting was a bit unprecedented, no doubt, seeing as the mentor he was approaching in the dining area had his head down in his notes. Still, his leftover meal did stand out. Dane perched at the edge of the table, peering down at his recent friend’s work as he rubbed gently at the four-inch red scar on his arm, one which was similar to the smaller one across his cheek. “Sorry if you’re busy. Just wanted to thank you again for your gifts. These bracers really are incredible,” he praised, tapping his sheathed wrists together with a small clink clink! Since his outing with Dean recently, it was unlikely that he would be removing them anytime soon. It helped that they were surprisingly comfortable.
(continued)
Landon tried to memorize as much of Lark’s sweet lips on his hands as he could. With each new kiss that trailed into his palm, it felt like a bird pecking seeds as he drew closer to a hopeful, longing statue. He’d find it a fitting analogy if his thoughts could focus on anything else at the moment. The kisses slowed to a stop, and he felt Lark lowering their hands. Grateful for that much affection gifted to him beneath the stars in their little bubble, Landon remained still, engraving those sensations into his mind until he felt the light, airy brushing of fingers across the top of his hand.
As Lark’s palm came up to rest on his rapidly beating chest, Landon knew his heart gave him away. He could hear the soft smile in Lark’s voice that calmed him with the gentle reminder to just keep breathing, and it calmed him for a brief moment. Thankfully, Lark didn’t seem to be withdrawing. Quite the opposite, actually, so he didn’t feel embarrassed or “caught” as if what he felt was wrong. It felt right.
In through the nose, out through the mouth.
Before the words fully settled into Landon’s mind, he felt the warm presence of Lark’s free hand on his jaw. His brows cinched up slightly, slowly in a silent plea for Lark not to stop yet. Soft, pressing lips trailed along his jawline, and their urgency only made his heart beat faster, despite the directive to relax. A new slow, warm wave of excitement coursed through his body, pulsating from his heart to his arms, legs, fingers and toes, and he couldn’t keep his hands to himself any longer. A shy, gentle graze with the backs of Landon’s fingers found the angular curve of Lark’s jaw, followed by the pad of his thumb as they rounded the smooth skin down to his chin.
In through the nose, out through the mouth.
As the other’s warm breath fanned across his sensitive skin, Landon inhaled deeply, feeling the beginnings of a shiver. It felt good. Landon’s neck was one of his weak spots, and he knew they’d have to stop at some point before things got too heated, but he was enjoying this too much to put a halt to it so soon after starting. His fingers brushed upward now along Lark’s jaw again, fingertips slowly unfurling from their curve until they rounded along the side of the other’s neck. Carding his fingertips through the curls at the nape of Lark’s neck, Landon’s thumb gently grazed the corner of that beautiful jaw as he was kissed, feeling the way it moved with each kiss gifted to him. Subconsciously, he leaned in a little closer when Lark likened him to blackberries and honey. It made him smile and feel warm inside.
The fingers of Landon’s free hand still rested on Lark’s knee, but came a live slowly, like the first blooms of Spring. His fingers rolled across the soft fabric in a languid circle, coming closer together, then lightly spreading again. He wanted to know what the rest of Lark felt like, but he didn’t dare push further up right now. It was too soon. Too new. He didn’t want to cross a dangerous line and scare Lark away in his eagerness to explore. Instead, his hand palmed gently back, closer to Lark’s knee until he found the other’s free hand. Those same languid fingers laced softly with the other’s in an easy hold that wasn’t overly constrictive, but still held the warmth of his affection.
“Thank you,” he murmured. He wasn’t sure why he was thanking Lark, but the words fell from him like a sigh of relief. A gratefulness for the ray of light that were Lark’s lips, clearing the clouds of doubt and uncertainly that lurked in the back of his mind. They would be there again come morning, but for now, they were blown far away. Landon then slowly turned his head, brushing the tip of his nose with Lark’s for a moment. Just a few heart beats before dipping down to catch those sweet lips with ease, pressing his into them with more affectionate intent than his first kiss had. He felt that vibrantly warm sensation in his chest as he savored Lark’s sweet lips, giving a gentle suckle to his upper lip. He lingered for a moment, then stole another moment before drawing back and pressing his lips together in a soft smile. He pressed his forehead against Lark’s with a softly exhaled sigh of contentment. “Peaches and brown sugar,” he whispered, eyes closing again to bask in the gentle warmth between them for just a moment more. He knew the night had to end, that they would need to get out of there and part ways to go on with their lives, but he wanted just another minute.
“What a shit show.”
The remark had earned Fell a few glances and glares in his direction, but he remained where he stood at the back of the viewing room, arms crossed in front of himself. Two was having another shitty year in the Bloodbath, despite the fact that the kids were Academy trained. Must have gone soft in their lessons. Fell watched as Nike had been beaten to a near bloody pulp, and Leon wasn’t fairing much better himself. It was a mess.
He kept his back leaned against the wall. He intended to stick it through and watch the full Bloodbath despite the disappointing display. Someone had slipped into the room and he glanced over at them, “You didn’t miss much yet.”

She should have been used to it by this point. Every year, Tributes those kids died, it was part of The Hunger Games. But Harlow couldn’t help but feel each death personally, couldn’t help but affiliate it with her own past. Not just the blood she still had to try and wash from her hands, but in Soren’s memory. It had only been six years, and she was expected to carry on, to move forward and act like she wasn’t affected. That his death was a minor inconvenience.
And now, she had to bring a dead girl home.
Harlow’s eyes closed as Vida’s body slid down from the tree, swallowing hard as she dropped her head for a moment. She drew in a slow, faltering breath. She needed a drink. Pushing herself up from her seat, Harlow turned to head toward the bar, but stopped short at the sight of a figure she didn’t realize had been standing behind her. Her shoulders jolted upward briefly, startled by the seemingly sudden appearance of someone behind her, but then she exhaled a breath, shaking her head at herself as she blinked back the tears in her eyes.
“Sorry, you... I was in my own world. Sorry.” She offered a brief, weak smile, knowing her resolve was crumbling quickly.

His body was on fire from the energy humming through his veins. Jasper didn’t know how or when it happened, but he knew something was off about his drink. Just a little too sweet. By the time he figured it out, he was falling. Fears and doubts burned away by exhilaration. He should have known better than to drink on nights like this when Fey were the most mischievous and driven by instinct.
Oh well. His thoughts were drifting further and further away from his grasp - wisps of clouds, edges of shadows, smoke rising into the sky.
Everything was bigger, brighter, and he couldn’t help laughing. What was he even laughing at? When did he start enjoying this?
Time continued to blur and soon Jasper found himself bumping into a familiar face and his heart practically jumped out of his chest. “Hi, shit - sorry. The room is kind of spinning, but in a good way.”
