Nathan had almost dozed off during third Mensa, but when he almost fell off the bench and was convinced that he'd almost died from a heart attack, he was wide awake again. Not to mention the thought of swimming with Emma that night was propelling him through the last minutes of Mensa, before they were sent to their rooms. Going through Russian one more time, Nathan kept tapping his foot impatiently, waiting for roughly fifty minutes to pass before he left his room. When the time came, he shoved his notes away from his, stood and stretched. He'd already put on shorts that would survive just fine in water. They had a pair of slightly-tighter-than-normal swim trunks, but they were found wet with the rest of the laundry, Division would probably question it. Slipping out of his room and into the gym, Nathan opened the door to the Pool (which was surprisingly open) and found it hard to navigate the room, in which he'd barely spent time, in the dark. He wasn't even sure if Emma would be there by now, or if she took her time to wait way after curfew, but Nathan softly called out her name just to be sure. "Emma?"
Emma walked around her room, slipping the damp bathing suit on before pulling her clothes over it. It was easier to say that she was going to the bathroom than sneaking into the pool. With the fork and knife she managed to take from Mensa, she slid out of her room. She considered herself lucky for being so close to the pool as she slid down the hallway and into the gym. Once she was at the door of the pool she used her tools to pick the lock. With a silent thanks to the Division idiot who didn't put a proper lock on the door, she opened it and slid inside. She had just taken off her shirt when she heard Nathan's voice. "Over here. Hold on I'll get you so you don't fall in." Having been there enough times, she walked toward where she knew the door would be.
Nathan almost flinched at the sound of Emma's voice, somehow having prepared himself for silence. All he heard was the sound of water lapping gently against the edges of the pool and the slap of bare feet on the floor. "Alright, I'm over here." As he remained in place, Nathan decided he might as well take off his shirt already, in case Emma decided to push him in or something. He wouldn't put it past her, since he would probably do the same. Grabbing his shirt by the collar, he tugged it off in one motion, making a weak attempt to fold it neatly in the dark. Ending up with an uneven lump of shirt, Nathan wasn't sure where to place it, since putting it next to the door would be plain stupid. "Where should I put my shirt?" He wasn't exactly sure how Emma went about these things, but figured that following her lead might be best.
Emma moved toward the sound of Nathan's voice and grabbed onto what she thought would be his arm, but it didn't take her long to realize that it landed on his chest. She flinched away almost immediately and blindly felt around until she was sure it was his arm. "Right. Come this way," she said tugging him toward the wall where she normally kept her stuff. "You can leave your shirt here. Don't worry if you forget where it is." Emma let go of him and slid off her shorts to put them where she left her shirt. "So, you ready?"
Nathan almost shoved Emma away out of instinct when a hand was suddenly on his bare chest. His breath stopped in his throat for a moment, the contact surprising him, and Emma as well apparently as she pulled away and her hand reappeared on his arm. Following her, he felt with his other hand, trailing the wall with the hand that was holding his shirt. When they stopped, he stooped down and put his shirt on the floor. His eyes had adjusted a little to the dark, but all that was to see, really, was the crack of dim light that came from under the door. When Emma asked is he was ready, Nathan took a deep breath, the idea of swimming in the dark firing him up, suddenly. "Whenever you are."
Emma smirked at Nathan, even though he probably couldn't see it in the dim light. She could feel her heart racing and it was almost like the adrenaline rush she would get before she came to Division. Sneaking into a locked pool to swim with a strange boy in the dark. What would her mother say to her now? "Let's go," she said taking in the last few steps before diving into the water.
Nathan felt a laugh bubbling up in him as the energy in the room rose, making his skin prickle. A few quick footsteps and a splash, leaving Nathan gasping at the explosion of sound. It was like a bomb had gone off. But if she was used to doing this, he assumed he could do the same. Stupid, really, but still. Feeling a broad smile on his face, he ran and leaped in the water, hand in front of his face as he made a headlong dive into the water. The water wasn't really warm – as you could expect from Division – and Nathan gasped as he broke the surface almost immediately. Breathing out half formed words that may or may not have been curses, Nathan kept himself afloat, unable to locate Emma in the darkness, the sound of water and his own breath all he heard.
Emma relaxed as she hit the water, as if all of her worries were temporarily washing away. She started swimming around underwater until she heard Nathan jump in after her and she started to swim toward where she felt the water moving. She thought about dragging him underwater, but she didn't know how good of a swimmer he was and the last thing they needed was to get caught because she decided to play a stupid prank. Using her arms, she broke the surface of the water and smiled at him. "You're alright right? You're not drowning yet?" she said breathlessly
Nathan turned to where Emma appeared, on his left side. Some of the shock had worn off, relaxation settling in instead, a lazy smile on his face as he drifted around. He hadn't swum much in Division. Only once, actually. And that had been alone, so this was a pleasant change to that time. Nathan wasn't a very good swimmer, but he could keep himself afloat easily enough, dive and swim underwater and all that jazz, but he simply hadn't had much occasion to grow better at it. "Yeah, I'm good." It came out a little breathy, the constant movement of his body making speech a little different. "This is... great." Nathan swam in one direction, trying to feel ahead with his hands. He met the wall soon enough, holding onto it as he took a breather.
Emma decided to ignore his breathless voice for the time being. He most likely wasn't as used to the water as she was by now. She rested her head back and floated around until her head hit the wall. In the dim light, she could see Nathan's contour to her right and she faced him. "So how've things been?" she asked softly. "You get into any trouble since we talked this morning?" Emma knew that there wasn't much to do during the day when everyone's eyes were looking at you, but she felt the need to ask anyway. When you lived with a bunch of criminals, you couldn't be too sure.
Nathan snorted lightly at her question. As if he would steal a gun during weaponry and kill someone. Okay, what she meant probably wasn't that dramatic, but it's what went through his head. "Er, don't think so. I did mess up during IT, but that's a different kind of trouble." Nathan liked IT, actually, but wasn't that good with computers. Hard to stay positive when Rin and Aidan were almost able to do with one hand and hold hands at the same time. They hadn't actually done that, but still, they probably could. Turning to where Emma's breathing came from, Nathan asked her the same. "And you?"
Emma groaned at the mention of IT. She hated that class with a passion and felt even more clueless in that class than she did during languages. "You're not alone with the messing up. I mess up in that class all the time." She was made to be a hacker. She was made to do things that other people thought were crazy. "I haven't done much, but I am happy to report that the hypothetical fire is still hypothetical and it still may have gotten me into trouble." She laughed a little despite being serious.
Nathan smiled at the thoughts of the hypothetical fire, for he had thought that the girl had been crazy enough to somehow start an actual fire in her room and then ask about it. Yeah, no. "Define trouble?" Also, who would did she go to with her hypothetical fire to make it problematic? "And who gave you the trouble?" Nathan kicked off from the edge of the pool, aiming to swim to the other side as he passed Emma, who was somewhere on his right hand.
Emma floated on her back and closed her eyes, although it didn't really make much of a difference. "Not much trouble. Just a room check, but considering what's in my room..." Emma hadn't meant to say the last bit out loud and she was hoping that Nathan didn't hear her. "It was my handler who found out, not one of the main bosses or anything. But now I don't think he likes me or he's doing that 'I'm keeping a close eye on you' thing." Either way she was annoyed.
Nathan went underwater, not really catching Emma's words but caught the last about her handler finding out about her hypothetical fire. Even though, technically, there wasn't really anything to find out about. But they did room checks? Huh. In the three weeks he'd been there, nobody'd come to check his room. "Who was your handler again? I keep forgetting." Nathan raised his hand out of the water and started trailing over the top of the surface. He hadn't swum a lot in his life but he had always liked water. Water was nice.
Emma heard Nathan go underwater and patiently leaned against the wall, reciting the Spanish conjugations in her head. It was what she normally did whenever she swam. "I have Tristan. I don't know the guy that well, but first impressions, you know." She started to swim away from him, trusting her voice to carry in the empty place. "Who's your handler again?"
Nathan searched his memory for Tristan. He didn't have much on him, the handler not having crossed his path before. Emma's voice turned away from him as he drifted aimlessly in the water, kicking to keep his head above the water. "I've got Mr. Maslany." Nathan inhaled, talking and keeping himself afloat proving to be quite the challenge after some time. "Ethan." Going for the side of the pool again, he tried to regain his breath, keeping his breathing low and controlled.
Emma remembered the name, but she couldn't think of how. "Ethan?" Then she remembered that he was Stacey's new handler. "How is he? Is he nice or a dick?" Emma had a vague line of dickness that most people fell on, Nathan being on the nicer side of it. She dipped her head under the water and swam around a little to help get herself warmer before coming back up.
Nathan grinned at her words, smiling to himself as he heard, or thought, Emma go under. When she came back up, he replied. "Don't sugarcoat it. And not sure, had one meeting with him. He seems strict, but we might get along." Nathan shrugged, hands still gripping the edge of the pool and having his feet on a ledge. His hair was a mess as he pulled a hand through it, his curls wet and plastered to his head.
Emma smiled when she heard Nathan and shrugged even though he couldn't see her. "Well, no point in sugarcoating dickness. If you're an asshole, don't hide it." She floated around the pool, not entirely sure where she was going. "I think strict is a prerequisite for being a handler. Except maybe Amanda, but I don't know her enough to decide that one."
Nathan let out a soft laugh. Nathan had often withheld asshole-ish comments for the sake of maintaining a decent reputation that didn't contain the word 'asshole'. "Well, then let's say he's slightly stricter than average?" Nathan swam to the other side again, deciding to hoist himself out as he sat on the side. It was a lot colder than in the water, and for a moment he considered going back in, but then again, it was time he took a shower and got some sleep. His no-shenanigans week had been good for him, the bags under his eyes almost gone.
Emma smirked to herself and counted her blessings. At least Tristan wasn't stricter than normal. "I'm pretty sure if I had Ethan, I'd be cancelled already. I'm not really one for rules." As if he couldn't tell, Emma thought to herself. She heard him get out of the pool and started to make her way to the edge as well. She was starting to feel a little ill recently and she figured the cold pool didn't help. As she pulled herself out she shook her hair free of the water. "See, not even a guard in sight," she told him.
Nathan bowed his head to her comment, the gesture coming automatically even though she couldn't see it. "Right you are, Emma." And it was weird, in his opinion, that guards didn't bother to check the pool. But then again, it had been locked. Until Emma came along. Moving lazy circles with his legs in the water, Nathan stared at the black ceiling, unable to discern any detail. He inhaled and exhaled, letting his head drop back again.
Emma felt the chill in the air and suddenly realized how cold she was. She walked over to where she left her stuff and grabbed her towel and wrapped it around her arms before returning to where Nathan sat. She sat next to him in silence, enjoying the sound of the water hitting the walls. "You bring a towel?" she finally asked. "I think they have some pool towel hidden in the closet somewhere."
Nathan heard the padding of bare feet against tiles and figured that Emma was completely out of the water. He remained seated, and heard her coming closer to him. They sat there and Nathan was getting colder by the second. Pushing himself into a standing position, Nathan replied. "Yeah, it's by my shirt." Nathan had difficulty navigating in the darkness, feeling with his feet before he walked. Eventually, he reached the general area where Emma had been and felt around for his shirt and towel. Finding it, he wrapped it around him and walked back to Emma, plopping down again.
Emma closed her eyes and kept her legs in the water, although because of her height, only her feet was really in the water. She kept her towel close to her even though it was damp and was starting to make her colder rather than warmer. "You know, sometimes, it's really easy to forget that we're in a secret government agency that basically kills people for living. Like right now we're just two kids swimming together at a pool and are not fighting for their lives."
Nathan nodded. It was hard to remember. But Nathan always remembered. Their grey clothing, the bare walls, the training. The guards with guns. Everything was a reminder that they were something of Division. "It can be easy to forget. And those might be the best moments." Nathan looked sideways, even though he couldn't see Emma, he was looking at where she was. Just a black blur of a silhouette against a grey background. "We should get back soon."
Emma sighed, remembering that eventually they would have to return to the real world now. She rested her head on her palm and pulled her feet out of the water. "Yeah. I guess we do." She used her towel to dry off her hair so that she wouldn't drip all over Division. She glanced at the dark blob that was Nathan and smiled. "I had fun," she told him.
Nathan stood up and walked to the door, holding out his hand so he felt the wall as he reached it. Trailing his hand alongside the wall he felt the door and turned back to Emma. "I did, too."
