save the last dance for me // amos & mary
It wasn’t quite the end of the dance, just reaching the time when people were starting to trickle out. Normally Mary stayed through that and longer, never one to leave the party while there was still fun to be had, but tonight she was thinking she might have other plans that will keep her occupied. But before she could get to that, she had promised Amos a dance. That was a promise she would not break.
“Surprise,” she said as she snuck up and jumped in front of him. They had both been busy and had not seen too much of each other throughout the night, which wasn’t altogether unusual. They were close, sure, but they also both had plenty of other friends to jump around between and spend time with. Some parties they spent more time with each other than others, but what mattered was they always found their way to each other at some point.
“So, I think I might be, uh, headed out soon. But-” She drew the word out, like she was keeping him in suspense of a great surprise she was about to spring on him. “I couldn’t leave without giving you the dance you deserve. I know I’ve kept you waiting, but it’s only because I figured you’d want the honor of being my last dance. For the dramatics of it all.”
She held out a hand to him with a flourish. “So, will you do me the honor?”
