Really good one
BPD stain who with me
slightly more collected act 3 thoughts:
i really adore tommy’s gman characterization. the rote repetition of all the game’s events to get to his point, trying to keep everyone at an arm’s length, the brusk, stressed lawyer/accountant vibe, it’s very good
the direct lampshading of “i’m looking at myself if i hadn’t seen that sunset” has shaken my convictions in benrey-stain, but i think they still hold up as interesting contrasting characters which has always been my main interest
i really liked the rhythm of the team running through the overwhelmingly loud streets filled with monsters, screams and musical stings echoing above them in the night, and then sealing themselves in cramped, brightly lit boarded up buildings, as well as gordon getting increasingly afraid of seeing the less easily explained by scifi tropes, upright corpses and skeletons staring at him from the crowds of zombies. there was 30 minute chunk that really strongly had these vibes and i hope they lean into that vibe in the edit
the l4d zombies also had some good scares, like gordon getting choked on the ground of dragged around, as well as grigori’s general unease with them not belonging in ravenholm
the sheer prevalence of the “ghouls” (skeletons, burnt corpse, burnt skeleton, green skeleton, transparent ghosts) in ravenholm is interesting. i’ll be curious if they go back to their normal levels of subtlety after exiting “spooky town area” or whether they’ll be gone entirely and were just foreshadowing for that (i doubt this), or if they are going to be at a higher level of visibility and interference now
the funeral bit felt surreal, partially because of how late it was, partially with how completely disconnected it felt from the whole world, partially from how long and somber it was. i hope when they wake up everything and everyone from the funeral has been stripped away and they don’t really address it
Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out, but I’m still gonna yap bc I think it’s interesting.
I absolutely adore Little Dog but I can’t stop thinking about the implications of his existence
In base Half Life 2 Dog is a giant robot, but he didn’t start off that way. He was initially this tiny little thing built by Eli to keep Alyx company, which Alyx later added to (hence the whole giant robot part)
It’s not a 1:1 match, but I think Little Dog is another example of sequence breaking and characters from the original game (especially pertaining to Alyx) being changed as a result
Little Dog is even smaller and more rudimentary because there was no Eli Vance to build him. He was never expanded upon further because there was no Alyx (at least in the story) to add to him
The game knows Alyx and Dog SHOULD be there, but since there’s no reason for these characters to exist they’re simply there as shells. Alyx is (mostly) mute and completely bugged, and Dog is a tiny little thing that can’t do much more than follow the crew around.
