hi! adding this at the start to say that i'm not a bug expert, and some of these additions are based on vibes. i am going based on specifically hlvrai and hl2vrai characters because i don't know much about HL/HL2 (hoping to change that eventually!). this is just for fun, pls don't take this super seriously.

Gordon Freeman - Speckled Wood Butterfly
Gordon would've been a butterfly regardless of what I picked, but this one spoke to me in a way I can't entirely explain. I picked butterfly for him because of how hlvrai/hl2vrai is based upon choices (improv), the story plays out the way it does because of things that are said and done. Gordon Freeman is the butterfly in the butterfly effect. If it weren't for the player and how they reacted to everything going on within the game, I'm positive it wouldn't have gone the way it had.
Benrey - Southern Resonant/Great Pine Barrens Cicada
getting it out of the way. yes i did choose this specific cicada because of the name. but ! i picked it also because of the symbolic meaning of cicadas, which is immortality. to me, i could also see them representing rebirth, the shedding of their old self to be something new aligns with Benrey and the skeletons to me. i also picked a cicada because their wings, when touched together/rubbed, make a buzz sound, and that's kinda like the black mesa sweet voice
Dr. Coomer - Migrant Hawker Dragonfly
i can't entirely explain why i picked dragonfly specifically, but i can absolutely tell you why i picked this species. it spoke to me because of Coomer's desire to see outside of the game. theres a world out there and he wants to see it. i thought a migratory bug would suit him purely because of this!
i had most of this already sorted out before I made this thread but as im writing, i think there are probably some beetles out there that would fit him too. maybe a hercules beetle. i like both ideas
Dr. Bubby - Bolivar's Short-winged Mantis
before i had ANY other characters and their bugs planned, like as i was considering writing all this shit down, i had bubby and a mantis in mind. pure vibes. he just looks like he would be a mantis. which is funny because mantids are usually known for being very peaceful and zen and stuff. and bubby is NOT that. but he also seems like he would bite your head off after mating so idk maybe it works.
another bug i found that I felt fit him was the small carpenter bee. it's blueish and nearly hairless. what could be better.
Tommy Coolatta - Bumblebee & Firefly
i think these kinda speak for themselves. entirely personality based. no further information needed. they're also cute.
Dr. Darnold - Honeybee
honeybees are hard workers!! im a firm believer that darnold works sososo hard and puts so much effort and care into his potions. also honeybees make honey and that's basically like making a potion
Forzen - Army Ant
no picture because i can't find one that's a singular ant, as there are over 200 species of army ants! regardless, i think it fits because of the whole military thing, even though he works alone. choosing to ignore that part. rip team nice.
The G-Man - Huntsman Spider
contrary to how they look, Huntsman spiders aren't deadly to humans. severe reactions aren't common! and, since they're big, lanky hiders that aren't typically aggressive, I think they fit G-Man perfectly. he's a neutral force, tends to hide to be ooo spooky mysterious, and is a lanky guy. practically twinning!

Sunkist - Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
picked this butterfly because it has a large wingspan and is yellow. that's literally it. "Big dogs are better!" AND SO ARE BUTTERFLIES!!!!
Joshua (Gordon's kid) - Cactus Bee
western/desert bug. a cowbee for the cowboy.
