Jayce was his mother’s son, through and through. He had followed the path she had carved for him to a tee, and adored her with everything he had. Even now, a grown man was power of his own, he was her creature, deferring to her on her opinions whenever things were tricky. She was the best woman he had ever known, and always, always, right.
Except once.
He saw the need to punish Lord Farwynd for his transgressions. The father had broken the laws of the land, but the daughter had not. That she had been essentially taken hostage was a surce of contention for Jayce. It was the one aspect on which he and his mother disagreed, and when he had taken up his post on the Small Council, he had used every resource his role allowed to try and bring her home.
He hadn’t been successful yet, and hadn’t told her of his mission, though she would have been blind not to notice the attention he paid her. Whenever his business had taken him south, he had gone out of his way to pass by Highgarden, to drop in and check on Asha. He wasn’t always welcomed, though he still made the effort anyway.
“Lady Farwynd,” he greeted her with his usual warmth, though he wasn’t sure she would want to speak with him. “It is good to see you out of The Reach. I hope your journey was pleasant?” It was idle small talk, but he didn’t know how else to broach her. “Is there anything I can get for you? Wine, perhaps?”
