She had seen little of Lorrie since they had made their escape, and for that she was intensely guilty. He had shown a regard for her safety over his own, and she had repaid him by focusing on Nell and her recovery, and now, on her own tangled affairs. She should have sought him out sooner, but time had ran away with her, and she could only hope that he did not hold it against her. As she approached him, tears pricked at her eyes. Friedi rarely cried out of a stubborn refusal to do so, but in that moment, she couldn’t help it. Shame at her own actions, exhaustion over her ever-changing moods, and wary of his reaction to the news he was sure to have heard, she threw herself into his arms, careful not to put contact on the back that had been in quite the state, last she had seen. “I have been a terrible sister, Lorrie. I am sorry I haven’t come to see you sooner,” she said, words muffled by the fact her face was buried in his clothes. “How is your back? I hope you are healing well?”
