Now that I’m officially all settled in, I’m ready to sleep for fifteen hours. Or at least attempt to. Because that sounds amazing. Oh, and before I forget, I’m Mason.
She didn’t know why she was so nervous. Wasn’t that absurd? Did she even really have a reason to be nervous?
Okay, yeah, she kind of did. She kind of had, like, twenty different reasons as to why she could (and should, honestly) be nervous for what was about to happen. It wasn’t even the shows that were getting to her. It wasn’t the idea of going on tour, it wasn’t the fact that this would be the biggest opportunity that she had ever gotten.
Those weren’t any of the sources for her nerves. She could handle every part of that.
No. Jane Hayward was nervous because of what went along with a tour -- and opening act. Specifically, this opening act. Them. And really, at the end of it all, she didn’t feel like she actually deserved to be nervous about any of it. She was the one who had left. She was the one who had bailed. So why would she get to feel nervous or worried about seeing them?
They had left on good terms, admittedly, but then she’d sort of... drove all of those good terms into the ground. Not that she really realized it at the time or anything, considering her primary thoughts consisted of being positive that her friends would be so excited that she’d found another group of people on the other side of the country to make music with.
Yeah, not so much. Which she realized when Madison unfriended her on Facebook, and she knew that she’d done something to shake up the entire balance that had been the going of things since they were in junior high.
And that was on her. And she knew that. Admittedly, she hoped that the tour would somehow... resolve everything.
Not that anyone knew it or anything, but she had recommended them to her PR team when they’d been tossing around opening act ideas... and they’d stuck. She knew that it was all part of a gimmick, really, some sort of “these kids all grew up together and now they’re touring together!” gimmick to bring in as many fans as they possibly could. It was also Jane’s second chance at really setting everything right between the friends who had been considered more of her family than they were anything else.
They were meeting up in New York this week for a few last-minute full-show rehearsals before taking off for tour on Tuesday. And that meant that Hey Wildcats! was going to be here, like, any second. As in she would be seeing her old friends for the first time in nearly two years, like… really soon.
“If you keep pacing like that, I’m going to get whiplash,” Kitty pointed out dryly, eyes peering up from her magazine for no more than a moment or two before she was looking back down. They were all sitting backstage at a warehouse in Tribeca that wasn’t much different than the venues they would be playing all across the country, and they were waiting for the band to get there so they could get over all the initial tour prep.
Jane bit down on her bottom lip, looking over her shoulder at Kitty one last time and shrugging at her. “You can’t blame me for being a little… apprehensive,” she pointed out with a slight shrug of the shoulders. A little apprehensive, however, was an understatement. You wouldn’t have this many knots in your stomach if you were just a little apprehensive.
God. Was she going to be sick? She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t do this.
Maybe she’d somehow made it the past two years without this bad of a guilty conscience, but that Jane was a figure of the past now. Now Jane was nervous. Jane was freaking the hell out.
“J, are you okay?” Tina asked, but before Jane could respond, she was muttering something about needing air and making her way toward the large doors near the back.
She pushed hard, a little too hard, really, considering she felt the door hitting someone else the second she reached sunlight. “Shit, sorry,” she said, lifting her eyes a moment later only to catch herself looking right back at a ghost.
A ghost named Mason McCarthy, to be most specific.
Not that this should really come as a shock to her, or anything, considering he was part of Hey Wildcats! and therefore was going to be part of the tour with her for the next few months, now, but… wow.
“Oh,” she cleared her throat and straightened her stance a moment later, giving him a slightly uneasy smile, head tilted to the side. “Mason. Hi.”
SUMMARY: Let’s face it, avoidance gets you nowhere.
MADISON McCARTHY
“Oh my god, is she still in here?”
Madison’s eyes barely lifted from where she was hangingupside down off the edge of Roderick Lowell’s bed, feet propped up on the wallbehind her and trying to maneuver her cell phone in her hand without dropping it on her face and, likely, sending both of them crashing to the ground.
Roderick looked over at her for a second from where he was sitting at his desk before his eyes shifted over to where Spencer Porter, his roommate, had come into the room, shrugging back at him. “She looked really sad outside of Jane’s room for, like, thirty minutes, so I told her she could hang out in here. I texted you all of this.”
“Don’t you have some brother to bang one out with – OW, dude, what the fuck?” Spencer reached down to pick up the 3DS game case that had just been thrown at him from across the room, moving over to take a seat next to Madison on Roderick’s bed. “But actually, this is pathetic even for you. And I’ve seen you wear Mabel Pine light-up sweaters. More than once. In the span of a week. Is this because of Mason getting it on with Sam Evans? Because trust me, I’m right there with you on the jealous front. I mean, he’s Sam fuckin’ Evans, dude. Sorry. Chick. Apparently I’m not supposed to call everyone dude.”
“Were you saying something?” Madison asked after a beat or two, gaze still fixed on her phone even though she could see his jaw-dropped facial expression from out of the corner of her eye. “Sorry, I’m just… trying to internally debate myself and kill time here. You should just carry on with whatever you were talking about, I’m really good at tuning conversations that aren’t about me.”
“This conversation is about you, oh my god,” Spencer groaned before Roderick was shooting him a glare that very clearly said BE NICE. And Spencer merely rolled his eyes and reached for Madison’s phone, plucking it out of her hand and tugging her up all at the same time, leaving her sitting up straight with her head spinning.
She turned herself around, shrugging back at him. “Mason wants to hang out tonight.”
Spencer blinked at her, expecting her to give some lengthier explanation, although she came up short instead. A beat, and then he was speaking up. “…oh no, what a monster?”
“It’s a pity hangout,” Madison spat back at him, as if she couldn’t believe she had to explain herself. “He’s spending, like, all of his time with Sam Evans, and it’s like he just suddenly remembered I still exist, and now he wants to hang out with me tonight and last time we hung out it was just awkward and we didn’t say anything that we needed to say, and this won’t be any different because we’ve never had to talk about this sort of thing before, so forgive me for needing a second or two to gather myself before I, like, willingly throw myself into this.”
Spencer winced back at her for a second, evidently debating if he should actually ask whatever it question it was at the tip of his tongue before he decided to go with it. “Are you sure you two have never—”
“—SPENCER—"
“—IT WAS JUST A QUESTION. SHE’S CLEARLY JEALOUS—“
“And on that note,” Madison cleared her throat, standing up from the bed and straightening her beanie atop her head for a moment before looking between the two of them. “Thank you for your hospitality,” she said, lacking just about any sarcasm in her voice as she was truly a girl who had been raised to say things like that. She stepped over to Roderick, pressing a quick kiss to the apple of his cheek before shooting a look over her shoulder at Spencer and making her way out of their dorm with her heart weighing heavily all the way down in the pit of her stomach.
She wasn’t used to not feeling like herself around her brother. That wasn’t the way they operated, that wasn’t the way that they’d ever operated. And despite what Spencer said, and despite what everyone may have thought, she wasn’t jealous.
She was scared. And that actually was harder to admit, because it wasn’t like she was used to being scared of this sort of thing, scared that all of Santana’s words about the two of them growing apart were true.
They weren’t supposed to grow apart. They were supposed to, like, still be in bunk beds when they were ninety. They were supposed to have a lot of pets, and they were supposed to live happily with the millions they ranked in from The Amazing Race and all the following All-Star seasons that they would surely get picked up for.
So, yeah, it was sort of scary to think that they were actually starting to be distant from one another. And it was scary to think about the fact that there were new people in their lives. And it was scary to think that her brother was actually growing up, and that there were going to be parts of his life that she didn’t get to know anymore, that she didn’t get to be involved with. That wasn’t fair.
And frankly, she realized she was being sort of petty and immature about all of this – well, a little – so it’s not like that’s new for her or anything. She didn’t know how to handle herself with this sort of thing, that was the problem. And so, she started throwing herself into hanging out with other people – partially to avoid Mason, and mostly so she didn’t feel like she had to struggle to catch up to him. She’d been gone by the time he woke up this morning because she didn’t know what to say to him, leaving him a Pop-Tart and a heart drawn on a Post-It to complement the frowny-face Post-It and Mini Reese’s that he’d left for her on her pillow last night before he’d fallen asleep.
This… really sucked.
Maybe they were supposed to be their own people, you know? Maybe they were supposed to grow apart.
Of course they were supposed to grow apart. That was the way that it worked.
What if they didn’t even share a dorm together next year?
She swallowed the lump she could feel forming in her throat as she headed toward the one flight of stairs that separated Jane’s floor from hers, wiping at her eyes with the backs of her hands to stop any tears before they even dared to show up.
She paused outside their door – the hardest one to miss, as it was covered in brightly colored wrapping paper, and had twinkle lights hanging around its frame, their names written in crazy neon chalk on the chalkboard hanging on the door – before reaching for her keys and undoing the lock, taking a step inside and already seeing Mason sitting on the futon, playing with his phone and only half-paying attention to whatever it was he had playing on Netflix.
After a second, she found her voice. “Still on for Twinsday night dinner?”

-- Cierra la puerta y apaga la luz, quiero estar contigo. -- Matthew se consideraba una persona excesivamente dulce y, sobre todo, romántica. Sabía que aquello no estaba bien, ¡era el novio de su hermano! Pero aún así no podía quitar sus ojos de él, ni dejar de tratarle de la forma en que lo hacía. Quería que aquél momento fuese especial, que disfrutasen de la compañía del otro, sin interrupciones, sin nada que les molestase.. solo ellos dos.
Una gran sonrisa apareció en los labios del ojiverde y se acerco a colocarse su abrigo rápidamente—Gracias de verdad por hacer esto Matt, espero que luego tu hermano no se enoje—Hizo una leve mueca y se acomodo la ropa, yendo hacia la salida rápidamente.- { nightxspaces }
-- ¿Vamos?
