Summary:

Four years after Temsik, Yomiel is visited by Inspector Cabanela in prison with shared memories of a decade that didn't happen. Questions turn into conversation, confrontation turns into camaraderie, and a dulled obsession turns into something new.

I'm picky with soulmate aus, but a cabayomi soulmate au has some really fun angst potential. they meet in the interrogation room, red string of fate connecting them when Cabanela unlocks his handcuffs and... Cabanela is still so desperate to prove himself, to prove to the SIU that he won't go easy on anyone, even his soulmate. he still drives Yomiel to despair, perhaps even more so because his soulmate thinks that he's a criminal.

and then Yomiel escapes and the red string is cut with his death. Cabanela blames himself for years. he had one shot with his soulmate, and now he's dead (to a meteor, of all things, but he would've stayed put if Cabanela hadn't left his gun on the table). he throws himself into his work and then into the manipulator case; can you imagine how he feels as he slowly realizes that Yomiel is the one he's been chasing all along? that his soulmate framed his best friend for his wife's murder?

for Yomiel's part... killing Cabanela would be like killing the last part of himself. sometimes he thinks about reaching out to Cabanela again, but, especially after he sees him avoiding Jowd in prison, he knows he'd just get arrested again. but he can't bring himself to actually kill Cabanela until the night of the deal, fully resigning himself to an artificial life with an artificial love and an artificial family.

and, oh, he'd absolutely lord the fact that they're soulmates over Cabanela's head during his evil monologue he planned out. "if your reputation is so spotless, why are you soulmates with a villain like me?" that kind of thing. Cabanela tries to justify it with the fact that their connection was severed ten years ago, but they both know that's wrong. in fact, when Yomiel carries his body up the stairs, the red string appears for just a moment and then is cut again, as Yomiel's body is in a perpetual state of dying and being revived. seeing it again might give Yomiel pause, but not enough to stop everything that's already in motion.

and then Sissel goes back in time before Yomiel's death. and the red string is still there, but Cabanela doesn't remember it being cut. he reaches out to Yomiel after his imprisonment and just gets the cold shoulder, which he accepts at first but eventually pisses him off. they're "soooulmates, baby!" but Yomiel wants nothing to do with him. only when he explains his plight to Jowd does Cabanela begin to understand what's happening (meteors? ghosts?? time travel?????) and they can start to make amends.
