Untitled (Woozi Fluff Piece)
I looked over at him cursing myself for missing the last class. Why couldn’t the teacher have just given me the notes and explained the assignment himself? Instead, he directed me to him. Yes, he was probably the smartest kid in class and the best student. But he was also intimidating as hell.
He always just sat there in the front row, right side, closest to the professor typically stood. Never saying a word except when the professor got frustrated with the rest of us and ultimately called upon him because he knew he would answer correctly. He would always answer in a monotone voice like he was bored that he had to answer such a simple question and had better things to do than being in the class and sharing his infinite wisdom with the rest of us. Then he would be silent again. And he would never take notes. He would just sit there like an impenetrable force. And now I had to approach him to ask for the notes and about our class assignment.
The bell rang and I took a deep breath and walked toward where he sat on the other side of the classroom.
“Excuse me,” I managed to say, “I…”
He stood up suddenly and turned toward me, his intense eyes on level with my own. We were the same height. I was caught off guard by this realization and became unnerved by his stare.
“I…,” I started again, “was absent last class. The professor said to come ask you?” I went up in inflection at the end as if asking a question and I saw the corner of his lip lift slightly up. “About notes,” I quickly added.
“I’m sure he did. Hypothetically I could give you notes, but I don’t actually have any physical notes. It’s all in here,” he said as he tapped his temple. “I could verbally give them to you. Though, I was actually headed to go eat,” he finished.
“Oh. Right. Ok,” I awkwardly concluded. What was I supposed to do now? I finally broke the eye contact, looking around for someone to rescue me.
Everyone had left.
“You could come, I guess.”
I paused to take in his reply in for a few seconds, “If it wouldn’t bother you, then I guess.”
“I wouldn’t say ‘bother’ really…” he trailed off, leaving me curious as to what exactly he meant.
He took a few steps forward before he realized I hadn’t followed him and looked back at me, gesturing with his head that I should follow. So I followed a few steps behind him until he abruptly stopped and I almost ran into the back of him.
“We can walk together,” he mumbled and we both started walking again, our strides and steps matching perfectly. He seemed different somehow now than he did in class. More light-hearted? Normal almost.
“What’s your name again?” he asked.
“Oh, sorry. Umm...Sejin,” I answered.
“Woozi”, he simply replied.
“I know.”
“How?” he asked.
“People talk about you,” I replied before realizing what I had said. I glanced over at him and his face was blank. No emotion at all. “Sorry, not that I share their opinion” I apologized feeling guilty because I had just lied, but he just kept walking. “So, where are we headed?” I asked, attempting to break the awkward silence
“We’re almost there.”
And sure enough in a minute we walked into what looked like a small, family owned restaurant and sat down at a table in the corner. A middle-aged waitress came over to take our order.
“I’ll have the burger with a side of fries and water please,” he told the waitress before she turned to me.
“Oh, I’m fine. Thank you, though,” I just wanted to get my notes and get out of there.
“Are you sure? It’s my treat,” he offered genuinely.
I thought about it for a second before the waitress interrupted my thoughts.
“Honey, always accept free food from a cute boy,” the waitress commented.
“I guess I’ll have the same then,” I said just so the waitress would go away. I looked over at Woozi again and it kind of look like he was blushing. It softened his eyes a bit. It actually kind of made him look cute.
Wait, what? Why did I think that? I wondered as I looked away suddenly feeling my cheeks get hot.
“So, the notes. And an assignment?” I asked trying to act like I was casually looking at my phone and not avoiding his eyes.
“Right,” he said and he began telling me about the notes. I looked back up, looking him in the face as he was talking and could tell this was a subject he was confident and passionate about. He was several minutes in before I realized I should have taken out paper to be writing the notes down, but I had gotten distracted by the way his lips formed words. Dear God, what was happening to me? I couldn’t take paper out now or it would look weird. So I just kept listening. Or pretending to listen and staring at those beautiful lips that turned slightly up at the corners when he got excited.
“Here’s your food,” the waitress said breaking me out of my trance. Thank you, God for that timely interruption.
I ate my food in silence as Woozi continued on about class, glad I could stare at my food instead of his lips.
“Sejin,” Woozi called snapping me out of an argument I was having with myself over if I should eat the remaining fries on my plate or not.
“What? I’m sorry” I apologized looking up and right into his eyes again.
“Did you want to go now? Or are you going to finish those fries?”
“Oh, no. I decided I’m not going to finish them. We can go now.” I added and slightly flinched that I used the word “we”.
Woozi put some money on the table and then he led the way out, holding the door open for me.
“Are you headed back to campus?” he asked.
“Yeah, my dorm.”
“How about I walk you and I can finish telling you about the notes?” he asked and flashed a blinding smile at me.
“Sure” I managed to squeak out and we resumed walking, perfectly in step again.
Woozi began talking again, but all I could think about was his smile. God damn, he had a beautiful smile. The way his eyes crinkled at the corners and all but disappeared when he smiled. So different than the intense stare he always had in class. How could even be the same person? This person was cute, courteous, and had a smile that would melt any girl’s heart and yet in class, he was as cold as ice.
Without realizing it, we had got back to my dorm room and coming out of my thoughts I realized Woozi must have asked me a question because he was looking at me like he expected an answer. Shit.
“I’m sorry what did you say? I was distracted”. By you, gosh darn it I thought.
“I said I could look over your assignment for class once you do it before you turn it in. If you want that is,” he seemed to add shyly.
“Right. The assignment,” I paused trying to think of what he had said about it. Come on brain. Don’t fail me now. Right, so he mentioned a paper. About…what? He was saying a research paper about something…but I hadn’t been paying attention to him. Or to his words at least, but definitely to his smile. Shit. “Which was what again?” I asked trying to ask cutely. Maybe he’d forgive me?
“You weren’t’ listening,” he said sounding disappointed and pouting. Oh, God that bottom lip. How cute could this man be?
“No. I was, well I was trying to.” I stammered on.
“It’s ok. No one ever listens to me,” he said as he starting turning away from me.
“No, wait,” I exclaimed and he turned back toward me. “I really was trying…but I was distracted…,” I trailed off.
“By what?” he asked crossing his arms in front of his chest and narrowing his eyes. Wow, he had nice arms too. No, Sejin. This was serious. Focus on the conversation. This is what got you in trouble in the first place.
“By….,” I stared at him thinking what I could say that was believable.
“Forget it if you’re just going to make something up.”
“Your lips” I practically shouted, my face heating up. “And your smile,” I added quieter. “But mostly your lips” I practically whispered.
Woozi smiled at me and I felt my insides go weak at it and I could have sworn my breath caught in my chest.
He took two steps forward, staring straight into my eyes.
“I noticed as soon as I stood up earlier, but you know we’re the same height? It’s perfect,” he said.
“Perfect for what,” I asked?
“This” he responded and leaned forward to kiss me.
No one had to stand on tiptoe or bend over. No craning of necks. Two sets of lips perfectly matched in height.
It was perfect.
