originally, i've based the design of my sona on the emperor moth!!
it's not a 1:1 redraw so i wouldn't exactly say that i am this exact moth, but it's something that i had referenced and kept in mind from the very beginning :pp
when it comes to backgrounds, it depends on the illustrations i'm making.
usually i'll have a messy sketch that clears up how i want to arrange the composition without, for example, perspective being perfect. then i'll look up references of specific things (that is if i need them) and place the set perspective properly (set the points, draw objects from them)
AND WHEN I SAY REFERENCES!!!! i mean objects that i might struggle to draw from memory; for instance, some kind of furniture or a building from a specific era. or maybe i want to look up how some sort of light works. or maybe a specific texture; i look things up, both for inspiration and for guidance.
like with every hard thing that you have to learn (to later enjoy it) you will have to force yourself to draw things, time to time. if it's not your thing and you suspect you might burn out easily, it's just important to do it sometime to actually practice. think of the background as important to everything else — if you intend to have one.
anotherrrr very important thing with backgrounds is that you'll have to think in 3d. be able to move around objects in your mind or have an idea how they might look from different angles and in a different light. a great thing to practice that is simply drawing simple shaped blocks (like a 3d triangle, ball, square and so on) in different perspectives.
for people with aphantasia: there are tutorials online, or advice made by artists with aphantasia!! i've seen one on youtube years ago, so i'm sure there should be more
