ABOUT:

Ten acres in Newton NJ provides a place for artists to incubate ideas and experiment in knowledge sharing and collective experience making. The public is invited to join in and participate in free workshops led by the resident artists from May 23-27, 2017.

This one week residency is organized by artists Ruth Borgenicht and Dana Michele Hemes to cultivate practices that encourage participation, collaboration and a sense of place.

The Cabin Collective's historic cabin overlooks Lake Aeroflex (Lake New Wawayanda) and is adjacent to Kittatinny Valley State Park in Newton NJ. The property's 10 wooded acres were carved by glaciers leaving behind stone ridges and a rocky terrain.

WORKSHOPS:

EXTENDED LISTENING, Tuesday May 23, 3-4pm

Join Dana Hemes in using simple technologies to expand the mediums through which we hear sound, deepening our listening. Participants will use piezo transducers as contact microphones and as hydrophones to listen to sounds through surface vibrations and underwater. This tool allows us to expand our sound perception capabilities and invites a more complex connectedness with the vibrations of the world around us.

Dana Hemes constructs system-based, visual experiments with human and nonhuman participants to explore interspecies dialogues. Drawing from process philosophy, technoculture and non-anthropocentric sciences, she creates functioning, complex systems to examine how interspecies interactions change the role of the human and the meaning of communication and art.

SEED STRUCTURE AND MOBILITY: A SENSORIAL WALK IN THE WOODS

Wednesday May 24, 3-4pm

Resident artists, Anne Percoco and Ellie Irons, invite you to join in moving together through the woods surrounding the cabin, pausing to explore and appreciate the different seed structures of various plants and the mobility tactics they might deploy for dispersal.

The Next Epoch Seed Library, founded by Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco, reimagines the traditional seed bank for the oncoming Anthropocene. Rather than gathering and preserving agricultural heritage from the pre-Monsanto era, this seed bank focuses on weedy species most likely to survive and thrive in a landscape dominated by human excess.

MAKE SENSE: EXPERIMENTS IN INTERACTIVE MULTI-SENSORY INSTALLATION, Thursday May 25, 3-4pm

You are invited to join in resident artist Joshua Nierodzinski's workshop, to become familiar with the concepts and practices of sense making and situational awareness. Participants will explore the potentials and problems of incorporating more than two sensory modes (i.e. sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) into a compact aesthetic experience.

Joshua Nierodzinski is an artist working in the expanded field of painting. His paintings and installations investigate representation, perception, and empathy through augmented materiality and multi-sensory presentation modes.

HARNESSING HEAT: OUTDOOR POT-LUCK, Saturday May 27, 11-5pm

Join in an outdoor pot-luck by contributing to the communal soup pot and/or bake in the mud oven. This event is hosted by artist Ruth Borgenicht to celebrate the culmination of the week-long Cabin Collective residency.

Ruth's participatory projects often include eating, foraging, harvesting, or engaging in other communal activities. Participants are invited to make something happen collectively, generating a connection to each other and a locale.

CABIN DIRECTIONS

GPS – Try 161 Lake Iliff Road, Newton NJ.  The property has no street frontage and therefore no number.  About 75 minutes from NYC, 45 minutes from West Orange.

To Cabin from north Jersey/NYC

• Take 280W to 80W, or get on 80W by some other highway.

• Take Exit #34B/Route 15N for Jefferson/Sparta

• Drive about 10.5 miles then take exit for route 517south toward Sparta.

• Left at top of exit ramp onto 517 south.

•  After 2 miles Route 517 turns into 616 = Newton/Sparta Road.

• Drive another 2 miles then make a LEFT at light for Limecrest Road

• After about 1 mile turn RIGHT onto Lake Iliff Road (fire station on corner)

• Turn LEFT after 1 lane bridge into parking lot (not grassy driveway) for Hillside Park community center (no sign).

• Drive to the end of the parking lot and continue STRAIGHT on paved, then dirt road.  

• Disregard sign “No vehicles beyond this point.”

• Go through STOP sign.

• You are now on our property - continue to end of dirt road.
