“Silenced Forever”   I took this photo on the occasion of visiting Čachtice Underground, the extensive multi-storey system of tunnels with Romanesque and Gothic vaulted ceilings that was built by the inhabitants of Čachtice from the original wine cellars. In the 16th Century, Ottoman armies started plundering the territory of today’s Slovakia and the villagers didn’t have any other option to save themselves from attacks or slavery than to hide under the ground.   Later the Čachtice Castle and the underground belonged to Count Ferencz Nádasdy and his infamous wife Erzsébet Báthory. According to historical records, she tortured and murdered virgin girls in order to bathe in their blood and preserve her youth. There’s a huge controversy about how historically accurate is this story. Many historians claim that Countess Báthory was a victim of conspiracy to deprive her of property. Probably we will never know the truth.   After the reconstruction, a part of these corridors is accessible for visitors again. Many of them reported the occurrence of paranormal activity, e.g. seeing ghosts or hearing strange sounds.
