Cactus Lee's Lone Star
Let's surge towards the end of a self imposed Positive Month here in the Bin with a series of songs that just make me happy.
I hope this one makes you happy too.
I'm sending this track, with its bubbly bump and sway, not to mention its accompanying montage of sweet 70's living room grooves, out to my buddy Ned. You can catch a glimpse of him above, thirty years ago, alongside yours truly and on his way to Mexico.
Ned has never even heard of Cactus Lee, let alone this song, before this moment, but the whole thing makes me think of him, and look forward to our next time together. We'll play our favorite songs, tip one back, or ten, and our hippy hearts will shine.
The Lagniappe Sessions :: Cactus Lee
Cactus Lee’s Kevin Dehan has been keeping busy. Following the release of four long-players in the span of some eighteen months, his honky-tonk horizons are set next on the live set, Live from Dry Creek Café, in tribute to the band’s beloved Austin haunt. Rowdy, and soaked in pedal steel and Lone Stars, it shines selections from the band’s patented Texas Music in perhaps its purest form yet. We recently caught Dehan for a gorgeous full-band set at the Brooklyn-based jukebox joint Skinny Dennis, and it is with those players—Jon Catfish DeLorme on pedal steel, Russell Hymowitz on bass, and Adam Amram on drums—that he laid down his inaugural Lagniappe Session.

Well, well, well. I’ve been talking with my good friend Rick for the past few days. Rick turned me on to bluegrass, honky-tonk, and Johnny Cash. So, when I ran across Cactus Lee, I immediately thought of him.
Sometimes, I just want some good, local, country music. I can’t stand the mainstream stuff, but Cactus Lee are clearly not that. Townes van Zandt, Nick Garrie, Jeff Zagers (Wharf Cat Records), and the previously mentioned Johnny Cash would appreciate this music.
