I’ve always been jealous of my friend Rick - he saw Townes Van Zandt play shortly before he died. Rick has always had a knack to identify the best of country or Americana.
I think Rick would appreciate what Jeff Zagers has done with his new album due on Wharf Cat Records. Zagers has pulled a Yo La Tengo and compiled an album of covers. If you like 50s or 60s country (think Buck Owens) you will like this. The one song here - “Your Motion Says” (an Arthur Russell cover) - is not necessarily indicative of just how country this release can sound. I think it sounds like Roy Orbison/Gene Autry/Ricky Nelson/Daughn Gibson put out a record on Born Bad Records.
Wharf Cat has been busy...and diverse of late. It looks like Jeff Zagers lives in Savannah, Georgia
