The Origin of Death and Ghosts
The people were living there; and in the early days, there was no death. All was well, until the world became overcrowded with people. To decide what should be done, the chiefs held council. They quickly decided that ‘death’ had to be introduced into the world, but how long a person should be dead was hotly debate. Most of the people there thought it would be sad if death was permanent, and suggested it shouldn’t last forever. Coyote dismissed the notion, as the whole purpose of death was to make and keep enough room for living people. But sentimentality prevailed and the council decided that death would only last for a short while.
The Medicine-men built a large grass house facing east. When they had completed it, they placed an eagle feather on the top. They explained to the tribe that when the feather became bloody, it meant someone had died. When this happened, the Medicine men would gather around the house and sing. Their singing would summon the spirit to the grass house; and once inside, they would restore the spirit to the form it had once been and could return to the living.
It was not long before the feather fell bloodied. The Medicine-men gathered around the house and sang. As they had predicted, ten days later, a whirlwind traveled from the west to their location. The supernatural wind circled the house and then entered through the eastern door. Soon a living man walked out of the hut. The tribe recognized him as a warrior that had recently been killed by an enemy tribe. The people rejoiced, but Coyote did not. It was not long before the feather fell bloodied again. The ceremony proceeded has it had before, until the whirlwind appeared. Before the whirlwind could enter the grass house, Coyote shut the door in front of the spirit. Unable to enter, the whirlwind moved on as a wandering spirit. With an eternal death introduced to the world, no spirit was allowed to comeback. Because of Coyote’s actions, all spirits are forced to roam the earth until they find the road that leads to the land of the dead. So if you see a whirlwind or hear the wind whistle, you will know it is a spirit wandering.
Poor Coyote has lived in fear of spirit ever since, wandering the land without rest ever since. You’ll know this to be true because if you see Coyote, he always looks hungry and is constantly glancing over his shoulder to makes sure nothing is following him.
