FYI:

I do not think Phineas and Isabella will “break up” or anything of that nature in the new seasons.

At most, Isabella’s crush might take a backseat to some of her other character traits such as her being a leader, her snarky side, etc. Similarly to how they wrote her in Candace Against the Universe. They chose to explore other aspects of her character in the limited runtime of movie, which I fully support. But now they’ll have two full seasons, I highly doubt her crush won’t come up in some aspect.

The pnf writers know phinbella is a popular ship they would not sabotage it. I also suspect we might see Phineas’s side of things more, since the original show was lacking in that regard (and I suspect the crew have seen some of our critiques of “Act Your Age” and will not want to repeat that).

I don’t want them to “break up” in the show (I put “break up” in air quotes bc it’s unlikely we will see post-relationship phinbella in the show at all). I just think breakup head canons are neat and interesting to explore. There’s the canon timeline, then my chfil timeline (spoilers: they aren’t going to break up!!), then my breakup timeline. And then allllll the other timelines from other fic writers!

between the ages of 11-15 (from 2011-2015), I used to joke I’d “storm Disney studios” if they didn’t make phinabella canon and/or release the episode where Phineas and Isabella get together. emphasis on *joke.* This was lighthearted. Facetious. Obviously not true.

These jokes were never posted online, instead made between me and irl friends—or just me writing long rambles about phinbella for myself. And i NEVER had any ill will towards Dan, Swampy, or any other PnF crew member. Even when the episode where Phineas and Isabella get together somewhat disappointed me!

What did I do in this scenario? I appreciated the parts of the episode i liked, wrote about the stuff I didnt, and made art and fanfic. (and this was primarily for myself, I didn’t start posting online at all until 2019.)

Pretty much any show I ever loved growing up has disappointed me. Pnf, WordGirl, Ladybug, Star Vs, the list goes on. This sense of disappointment faded when I stopped using my own expectations as a litmus for how good or bad something was. Approaching media without expectation is freeing bc it allows one to better accept whatever the media is giving them and avoid massive disappointment.

I try not to approach shows with expectations at all anymore. Like, season 6 of miraculous ladybug? I’m just along for the ride, it’s not what I imagined the future of the show would be when I first got into it but it is what it is. TADC? Whatever story gooseworx wants to tell is the story I want to see!

this isn’t to say expectations or critique are bad! I believe critique of anything that’s generating revenue is valid. I’ve critiqued season 5 of phineas and ferb plenty. But good faith critique is not the same as attacking a show’s crew or insisting it’s bad just because it doesn’t match your expectations. Expectations don’t always align and that’s okay. That’s what fanfic/fanart/etc are for !

All this to say, everything with Gooseworx is so disheartening. I so feel bad. IK toxic fandoms are nothing new (especially in regards to indie animation😀), but this whole mess just made me reflect on how I processed my own disappointment with fandom things as a kid. My disappointment inspired me to look inward and create, rather than point fingers and attack. That’s what I’d encourage a certain subset of the TADC fandom to do. It’s fun! And freeing. And it helps you appreciate the source material more and make peace with it, at least that’s been my experience.

Something I love about being a writer is I can take bits of my own life—be they brief asides or ever-present feelings/struggles/joys—and weave them into my narratives.

Like. Even if a moment in my own life didn’t amount to much, I can give that moment to the characters and let them fully experience it. Capture it in time in a way that’s a bit safer—and more accessible!—than making it all about me. Give it the meaning it lacked in my own experience.
