Her mouth went dry. The very idea of prison terrified Caesa– had ever since as a girl she’d been regaled with horror stories surrounding what might happen to lawbreakers thrown into dungeons. Curiously, that had never actually stopped her from repeatedly breaking the law, but… victimless crimes, and all that. She’d been able to buy her way out of trouble before.

“Surely I’ve done nothing so unlawful that lining a few pockets wouldn’t prevent a sentence of that magnitude,” Caesa insisted with a tone of voice that suggested she was trying very hard to remain lighthearted, and a smile that didn’t meet her eyes. “I’m not… I’ve never hurt anybody.”
