"Right. It's not like I'm in love with you or anything." Ed mutters under his breath as Roy continues going on and on.
"And another thing—Wait, what did you just say?" Roy stops his pacing suddenly, his head snapping up to meet Ed's eyes.
Ed smirks. "I'll tell you if you're finally done lecturing me."
Roy scoffs and narrows his eyes. "I simply think that maybe you'll regret getting married so young! And I feel I am well within my right as your friend to give my honest opinion!"
Ed can't hold it in anymore—he starts laughing so hard his whole body shakes with it. Roy crosses his arms over his chest and glowers at Ed with just the slightest hint of color blooming on his pale cheeks. Ed forces himself to reign it in and take pity on the poor man.
"I'm not getting married, you ridiculous bastard."
Roy opens his mouth and closes it again four times before he clears his throat and all of the fire fades from his voice. "…But—You said Miss Rockbell is now engaged."
"Yeah. And you went and assumed that it was to me and proceeded to go on a fifteen minute tirade." Ed pushes himself up from where he'd been lounging on the couch in Roy's office, closing some of the distance between them. "Winry's engaged to Paninya. Y'know, her girlfriend of like three years that I know I've told you about before?"
Ed watches with delight as Roy's cheeks darken further. "She is?"
Ed just rolls his eyes, taking another step forward until they are standing toe to toe. "Yeah. Now tell me the truth: were you really just concerned I was getting married too young or were you jealous?"
Roy sputters indignantly, eyes flitting around the room and refusing to meet Ed's eyes. "I'm sure I dont know what you mean."
"Oh? That's too bad." Ed makes a big show of over-exaggerating a sigh and turning to leave.
Roy grabs hold of Ed's wrist before he can get too far, fingers clasped almost painfully tight. He slowly turns back around and Ed's heart stutters as their eyes meet and he sees such open emotion in Roy's beautiful fathomless eyes.
Roy's voice is so quiet when he speaks again that Ed almost misses his confession. "I was jealous."
For all of his attempts to appear cool and confident, the fact that Ed was actually right and Roy was genuinely jealous at the prospect of Ed getting engaged to someone else makes his heart flutter up into his throat and his face warm up to the tips of his ears. He steels himself and raises his free hand up to place it over Roy's heart. Ed can feel the way it beats rapidly in Roy's chest—matching Ed's own quick heartbeat—and that alone is enough to help Ed feel ready to finally say the words again.
"I'm in love with you." Ed stares at his own fingers curling around the fabric of Roy's uniform jacket. He can hear the way Roy's breath catches in his throat and he chances a glance up, a sheepish smile on his lips. "That's what I said earlier."
"You—Are you certain?" Roy sounds like all the air has been ripped from his lungs.
Ed nods quickly. "I'm pretty damn sure, yeah. Have been for awhile now."
Before Ed's brain can even hope to catch up to what is happening, Roy's hand is cupping his jaw and soft lips are on his own. Ed's grip on Roy tightens as he lifts himself up on his toes to press eagerly into the kiss. Roy moves his hand from Ed's wrist to wrap his arm around Ed's waist and then they are pressed impossibly close together and Roy's tongue is slipping along the seam of Ed's lips and oh—oh, Ed is floating. He has transcended this mortal realm and all that remains is Roy, Roy, Roy.
When they part, their panting breaths mingle in the small space between them. Roy tucks a swathe of golden hair that had fallen loose from his ponytail behind Ed's ear, a bright and unwavering smile on his lips. "I love you. Of course I love you. How could I not?"
Ed feels like his heart is about to burst and his cheeks almost hurt as he beams up at Roy. He presses another lingering kiss to Roy's lips and melts into the contact for a few breathless moments.
"So, are you gonna ask me out already or do I have to do everything around here?" Ed teases after getting some air back into his lungs.
Roy chuckles low in his throat. "Would you allow me the greatest honor of taking you out to dinner, Edward?"
Ed slips his hand into Roy's, threading their fingers together and marveling at just how right all of this felt. "Yeah, I could eat."
Plllleeeeaase tell more about single dad Roy/teacher Ed. I'm such a sucker for kidfic
hehehe omg me too!! tysm for asking about it! i just have some rough outline stuff for you, i hope that's okay!!
꒰ ask me about my wips ꒱
roy has a 6 year old from a previous relationship (the mother dipped out after 2 years idk the reason atm i'll come up with one lol) and he's been raising her alone ever since. hasn't dated anyone or even tried, he's just been focused on giving his daughter (idk her name yet) the best life he possibly can and devoting all of his time and energy to her.
daughter just started first grade and when roy drops her off at her class for her first day he looks up to see the teacher standing against the open door, greeting the kids and their parents y'know. and roy is immediately speechless like this man is so beautiful he doesn't even know what to do with himself.
by the time the family the teacher was talking to parts, his daughter leads him by the hand up to greet the teacher all excited and stuff because she loved kindergarten and can't wait to see what first grade is like and she's a very extroverted, friendly, bubbly little girl.
so she makes their introductions and introduces herself first and then is like "this is my father, roy mustang. he works at/as a (idk what i want roy to be doing yet i'm still thinking) and we live together with our dog (idk dog name yet don't look at meeee). she's a golden retriever! i look forward to being in your class this year!"
and the teacher is grinning so wide with bright happy eyes and roy's heart is doing flips and shit at the sight as he bends a bit to shake the daughter's name. "it's very nice to meet you, [name]! my name's edward elric, but you can just call me ed or mr. ed or mr. elric, whichever you're most comfortable with! i'm looking forward to having you in my class for the year." and the daughter shakes his hand very firmly, nodding all happy.
and then ed stands back up straight, his grin tamed into more of a lopsided smile that's just as stunning on him and he offers his hand for roy to shake and roy kind of has to snap himself out of his speechless staring and they shake hands. and roy's all "thank you for taking care of my daughter, mr. elric." and ed's just smiling and nodding and "i'm delighted to have her! she's in good hands and this is a very safe environment, i promise. if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come talk to me at pickup anytime."
and yeah. roy's smitten. and he doesn't know it but ed's smitten as well. and daughter catches on and makes it her mission to get her dad and her teacher together because she wants her father to be happy.
"Resembool is always beautiful, but it's especially breathtaking now with the leaves changing and the crisp autumnal air." Roy sighs happily as they walk through one of Resembool's many orchards, intertwined hands lightly swinging between them.
Ed hums beside him. "Yeah, I always loved this time of year growing up. Al 'n I used to try to step on all the leaves to see who could get the loudest crunch."
"I bet a wedding this time of year would be lovely."
"Probably. They really love weddings out here—they always go all out."
"How about next year?"
"How about next year, what? Someone we know lookin' for a place to get hitched or somethin'?"
Roy pulls them to a stop and lowers himself down to one knee, keeping hold of Ed's left hand. "Us, I hope."
Ed stares down at him with wide eyes and parted lips. "W-what?"
"Would you like to get married here this time next year?" Roy removes the little velvet box from his jacket pocket and flips it open with his thumb to present the silver band with one small blue and red stone on either side of the symbol for infinity. "I love you, Edward. More than even the most poetic words in my arsenal can ever properly express. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. And you know me—any excuse to be a hopeless romantic with you."
Ed's laugh is wet to match his eyes as he grabs Roy's wrist rather than the ring and tugs. "Get up here. You're gonna feel that for a week 'n I'm the one who'll have to hear about it."
Roy does as he's told and hears his knees creak in protest as expected. Once he's standing once more, Ed lets go of Roy's wrist and snatches the ring from it's box to slip it onto his ring finger. He smiles down as the light hits the gemstones, making them sparkle. And when Ed pulls him down for an excited kiss it tastes like salt water and promises.

The door to the inner office bursts open and Roy smiles down at his paperwork, signing the bottom before looking up. "You know, one of these days you're going to leave a permanent indentation of the doorknob on that wall."
"Oh, please. I don't even let it hit the wall anymore." Ed crosses the room and drops a thick folder on the desk. "Here."
Roy blinks and raises an eyebrow, pulling the folder closer. "What's this?"
With a roll of his eyes and a huff, Ed plops himself down in one of the chairs across from Roy. "If ya look inside, there's a good chance the answer to that question's in there."
His lips twitch as he holds back a laugh and a sarcastic comment. He really is too curious to have their little back and forth over this. Roy opens up the folder and he skims over the first paper curiously, eyes widening slightly at the information present. Flipping through the pages, Roy finds that they are all filled to the brim with Ed's more legible handwriting. Page upon page of information about the governments and the people's thoughts on said governments from Xing, Creta, Aerugo, Drachma…
"Ed, this is…" Roy doesn't even know how to finish his own sentence. He can't imagine how long gathering all of this intel must have taken Edward. To think that Ed was putting in this much time and energy on his travels—for Roy, apparently—has his heart skipping multiple beats.
"I know it's probably nowhere near as thorough and detailed as what Hughes did for you—and I'd never try to take his place or anything, but I just thought… well, I'm pretty good at gettin' people to talk, y'know? And I was already traveling all over the place so it just sorta made sense for me to… take notes and shit, I guess. Dunno how helpful any of it is, but there's gotta be at least somethin' you can use to help on your way up. You got a promise to keep, after all." Edward gives him the softest smile Roy's ever seen on Ed's face and Roy's overcome with the strong urge to kiss this gorgeous golden man. "You helped me get Al's body back. I don't think I could've done it without you. So I wanna help you get to the top. And compiling all that seemed like a good way to start."
Roy looks from Ed down to the stack of papers and back up again. "I don't know what to say, Ed, this is far too much. You should be spending your time living your life to the fullest, not—"
Ed huffs out an exasperated sigh, but he's grinning now. "Would ya just say thank you already? I'll even let you take me out to dinner as thanks, if you're real nice about askin'."
Blinking at those words, Roy's lips curl up into a grin of his own. "Edward, would you like to join me for dinner? There's a lovely new steakhouse that just opened up down the road."
"You buyin'?" Ed asks as he jumps up from his seat.
"But of course."
"Then it's a date." Ed looks up at the clock and Roy notices it's half past five now. He's not going to think about the words 'date' and 'Ed' in the same sentence. Nope. Definitely not going to think about the fact that this could very well be a date with Edward Elric. "You ready now or should I come back later?"
Roy makes sure everything on his desk is in order and carefully gathers up the folder of intel, crossing the room easily to hold the door open for Ed. "Shall we?"
Ed beams at him as they walk side by side through the halls towards the exit and Roy feels a warmth inside that he hasn't felt in a very, very long time. He thinks he could get used to this—and that thought doesn't even scare him. Not with the way Edward's eyes sparkle happily whenever they meet Roy's as he yammers on. No, he's not scared at all. Roy wants to get used to this.
Ed hadn't realized how badly the beams of this dilapidated warehouse had corroded. That changes things. Footsteps echo behind him—angry shouts bounce off of the crumbling walls. He has to figure this out and fast. Ed is not about to let another building fall with him still inside. He promised he'd come home safe. Ed won't start breaking promises now.
With a quick clap, Ed slams his hands to the ground to throw up a barrier just in time to miss more bullets meant for him. He takes off in a mad dash around stacks of wood and piles of steel in the direction he thinks he remembers seeing an emergency exit door. His vision's starting to blur and he's pretty sure there's still a bullet lodged in his arm, but he doesn't have time to deal with any of that right now.
The red light of the emergency door is a beacon just ahead and Ed slams into the bar. He doesn't stop to catch his breath—just keeps running as fast as his legs can carry him. He'll keep running until he makes it to a clinic where he can get patched up just enough to hop on the next train out.
And then he won't stop walking until he's home—until he's safe—until he's in Roy's arms again.

Oooooh I like this game! Most wanted Man in Amestris please chum! 😍
omg hiiii hehe tysm for asking after a wip! i'll give you the like outlined premise of this one! i saw a post with a premise like this a long time ago and wanted to have a go at it.
꒰ ask me about my wips ꒱
the most wanted man in amestris (roy) has announced that he'll only marry the one who can open his front door with the key around his cat's neck. many try to chase and hunt down the cat and steal the key but no one succeeds. one day, ed finds the cat in an alley and saves it from someone who was trying to catch it. ed recognizes the cat and the key, but makes no move to grab it. it wouldn't feel right and he doesn't want to scare the poor thing any further anyway. from then on, the cat seems to find & follow ed nearly every day when he's out and about around the city (they're in central). ed says hello to the cat when he sees it, smile at it kindly, yaps to it about anything on his mind, and always assures it that he's not going to try anything bc he's sure the cat's gotta be tired of being chased all the time & that he'll kick anyone's ass that tries something when he's around. ed offers treats to the cat sometimes. eventually cat lets him pet it. eventually ed divulges the information that he knows who the cat is and who roy is because he's seen him around and ed thinks roy's just about the most gorgeous man he's ever seen. ed starts talking about how lucky the cat is to get to live with roy and get affection from the handsome man. and y'know, stuff and things further in that i don't wanna give awayyyy hehe.
How was I not following you before this?? Ok, homunculus Ed?? :grabby hands!:
omg hehe that happens to me aaaaall the time!! hehe. tysm for asking about a wip, here's a little snippet teaser!
꒰ ask me about my wips ꒱
Roy walks into his office to find Ed sitting on his desk, leaning back on his hands and kicking his legs back and forth idly. He's got his usual deep red cropped top on that shows off just the top half of the ouroboros tattoo that marks his left hip and disappears under the waistline of his leather pants. And like always, the black boots that make him just a bit taller than he truly is. He looks delectable—also like always.
"Hey Hot Stuff! About time you showed up!" Ed's grin lights up the room. Then again, Ed lights up every room.
Roy closes the doors to his office behind him and ensures the lock is latched. The last thing he needs is someone deciding not to knock and seeing Ed. "Hello, Edward. To what do I owe the pleasure of this surprise visit?"
"Y'always talk so proper. I like that about you." Ed tilts his head like he's pondering. "Been awhile since I've been able to get away 'n I wanted to see you."
"Are you trying to say you missed me?" Roy smirks, crossing the room to stand in front of the homunculus.
"And if that's exactly what I'm tryin' to say?" Ed's lips curl up in a smile that screams trouble.
Roy steps forward and rests his hands on Ed's knees, effectively stopping his kicking. "Then I'd say that I've missed you, too."
"i’ve never told anyone that before. please don’t look at me like that."

"I've... never told anyone that before." When he can manage it, Ed looks up to find Roy attentively gazing at him in that loving way he's been doing more and more lately. Ed knows his face is bright red by how hot he feels all the way to his scalp. "Please don't look at me like that."
Roy tilts his head to the side, brow furrowed. "Like what?"
"Like... that." Ed gestures to Roy's face like that explains it all. Shouldn't Roy just know what he means?
"I'm afraid I haven't quite gotten the hang of reading your mind just yet, dear heart. Could you give me a hint as to how I'm looking at you?" The longer Roy looks at him, the more Ed feels like his heart is going to take flight right out of his chest.
Ed rubs his hands against his cheeks, trying and failing to make the heat in them go down. "You're looking at me like Al looks at cats."
Roy's smile widens into a grin, eyes now sparkling with delight. "With adoration? With affection? With love?"
Ed sputters indignantly and looks down, toying with a loose thread on his shirt for something to keep himself from combusting on the spot at the sudden threat of his pesky emotions seeping through the cracks. Roy's hands are reaching for his in the next moment and tugging Ed into the space between his legs on the couch. Ed awkwardly manages to manuever himself so his legs are on either side of Roy's waist.
"Does it truly bother you?" Roy's hands are now cupping Ed's face, keeping him in place and making it impossible for Ed to not stare into those fathomless dark eyes.
"It's not that it bothers me..." Ed lets his arms come to rest on Roy's shoulders, his fingers threading through the soft hairs at the base of Roy's neck. His voice falls quieter, the truth getting stuck like a lump in his throat. "I just—don't feel like I deserve it, y'know? No one's ever... loved me like you do. Like—it's easy or something."
"Loving you is the easiest thing I've ever done." Roy answers truthfully. Ed knows he's telling the truth because there's nothing but honesty and openness in those eyes. "And weren't you the one that told me all those months ago that we deserve this? That we deserve to be happy?"
Ed nods sheepishly, fingers moving up to card through more of Roy's hair. Roy leans forward to place a sweet kiss between Ed's eyebrows, causing him to wrinkle his nose which only makes Roy do it again with a smile.
Ed tugs gently at Roy's hair, heart thumping in his chest as he thinks yet again how lucky he is to be able to call this wonderful man his. "Loving you's easy for me, too."
