丘の上のカフェ

サルバドールで数日を過ごすことになり、ブラジル在住の友人から「小さい街だから3日で飽きるよ」と言われたことが真実味を帯びてきたので、あてもなくプラプラと歩くことにした。方向音痴の散歩好き発動である。坂があれば登りたくなるもので、どんどん街の上へ丘を登ってゆく。小さな教会や骨董品屋などが開いたり閉まったりしていて、中心地にはない穏やかな生活感が漂っている。ある窓枠からいい顔の猫が覗いていて、思わずシャッターを切る。彼女（たぶん）は堂々とした表情で、まるで店番をしている煙草屋の主人のようだった。どうやらカッフェーなので入ることにする。小さな店内には使い込まれた調度品が所狭しと置いてあり、これは好みの店だ。奥へ進むと高台から海が一望できるこじんまりとしたテラスがあった。文字通りの一望。街の景色を越えた向こうに水平線がみえて、ああ、とても美しい。私はニッコニコの上機嫌になり、毎日でもここへ来たいと思う。珈琲をのんでゆっくり過ごしていると日が沈み始めた。テラスから入ってくる満タンの夕暮れはこれまで見た何よりも美しくて柔らかい光景で、カフェにいる全員がオレンジ色の光に身を委ねていた。こんな美しい景色でも、毎日見てると飽きるのかしらと、そこで働くおばさまに眼をやると、実にうっとりとした表情で空をみていた。その日が特別美しい夕日だったのかもしれないが、本当のところはもうわからない。美しいものは、いつだって美しい。 salvador, Brasil Mar 13, 2012
