Connelly, Sanchez, Lira walk away with championship belts, Giron earns title shot after Cage Combat 23

HUMBLE, TX – Houston area fight fans were recently treated to another fun night of amateur MMA with Cage Combat 23 taking place at the Humble Civic Center this past Friday, March 11th. 3 titles were on the line that night with Ryan Connelly, Alonzo Sanchez and Christian Lira all walking away as champions after earning their belts.

Two out of the three ended things quickly with Connelly and Sanchez both scoring first round submissions via armbar and rear-naked-choke respectively. Lira had a bit of a harder time, going four rounds with Tony Nguyen before securing the finish via choke. In all three fights it was the grappling that made the difference for the new Garcia Promotions title holders.

Elsewhere on the card, Josh Altum and Kyle Vilarreal put on a fun fight that ended in an armbar in Josh’s favor in the third round. Other top fights saw Amber Schoech pulling out the submission victory over a game Whitney Rice and Karla Hernandez walking away with a split decision over Iztel Esquivel. Anthony Clark also scored big with a huge knee to the torso of Jared Clark before finishing him with punches to secure the TKO in their bout.

Trio of title fights highlight amateur MMA fight card this Friday night in Humble

HUMBLE, TX – Cage Combat 23 returns to the Humble Civic Center this Friday night with an amateur MMA fight card stack 18 fights deep. This includes 3 title fights in the flyweight, featherweight and welterweight divisions as the organization looks to crown new champions in each of those with the previous titleholders moving on.

First up, competing for the flyweight title with be Athletic Performance Lab’s Christian Lira taking on Tony Nguyen out of Lutrell MMA. Lira is no stranger to title fights. His last two bouts have been for belts with him splitting the two, winning at SCC and losing at Legacy Amateur Series. Props to Christian however. He won his first four straight before finally losing that last one to Manuel Lozoya – an opponent with over 10 amateur bouts under his belt at the time who had been fighting since 2009. As for his opponent, “Team Pine” Tony Nguyen, he too has had championship success. He’s 5-0 and also has championship experience from SCC. Lira should be his toughest challenge yet and he’s prepared well for it – going outside the confines of Houston (4OZ) to train with top teams such as Lutrell and Team Alpha Male. This should be an interesting one.

Next up, we’ve got Alonso Sanchez out of Iron Dragon taking on Gustavo Gomez from GB Champions for the featherweight belt. Both fighters have been impressive at points in their career so far. Alonzo has torn through most of his opponents, going 5-1 nd winning his last 3 straight. Meanwhile, Gomez won his first three in impressive fashion (knocking out 2) but he’s stumbled in losing his last two bouts. Both these guys are hard punching knockout-minded fighters so this should deliver a finish one way or another.

Last but not least, Garcia Promotions website lists 4OZ fighter Ryan Connelly taking on Michael Patterson out of ACS for the welterweight strap. At 6′ 3″ with 6 fights under his belt, Connelly should have a consider advantage in both height and experience over his sub-6 ft. opponent Michael Patterson (1-0). With only one fight, it seems like Patterson might be a tad overmatched here but maybe the matchmakers know something the rest of the pundits don’t.

As for the rest of the card, there’s some interesting bouts on it. This includes two women’s bouts. One of them features the highly anticipated debut of Itzel Esquivel, a top class boxing talent with some grappling under her belt as well. She takes on Karla Hernandez while Whitney Rice takes on Amber Schoech in the other women’s bout.

Other prospects worth keeping an eye for based on record and previous performance include Melvin Giron (4-2) taking on Dayron Vasquez (4-1), Josh Altum (3-1) taking on Kyle Villarreal (4-2), and Danny Ageday (3-1) taking on Christopher Haire (1-0).

Favorite moments from Cage Combat 21 [results + images]

Morgan Oriahi, Leroy Vasquez win title fights; Heffernan and Vera put up FOTN

HUMBLE, TX – With 15 fights in all including 2 title fights, Cage Combat 21 was a night to remember for a lot of people. Jake Heffernan and Steven Vera will always remember it for their bout that earned FOTN honors in many peoples’ eyes. Leroy Vasquez will remember his third title win in a row at the ripe young age of 42 years old. And Morgan Oriahi will remember the stiff test from Craig Grove en route to his own title win.

There’s lessons to be learned and confidence to be gained following this event as well. While the aforementioned fighters did great, they’ll come away with some lessons to improve their game just like all the other combatants. Losing fighters like Grove can yet step away with their head up high knowing they can compete at a high level so long as they keep improving. Vera, Nicholas Gay, Dequette Reed and the rest of the amateur MMA’ers on this card can say the same thing – win or lose. That’s what it’s all about at this level anyways.

Morgan Oriahi stays undefeated, Craig Grove scores big knockout to highlight Houston MMA amateur event

HUMBLE, TX – Garcia Promotions’ Cage Combat 20 wrapped up this past Friday night in Humble. The card featured fifteen amateur fights for a busy night of action. Headlining the event, Dark Side’s Morgan Oriahi stayed undefeated at 4-0 as an amateur following a first roud TKO over 4OZ fighter Ryan Connelly. Also staying undefeated was Elite MMA’s Danny Bennett as he finished Sol Combat Club’s Jordan Zendejas by second rond TKO.

Other big winners included 4OZ “Caveman” Craig Grove who scored a first round knockout of Nick Ortiz to up his amateur mma record to 4 wins against 0 losses and Jake Heffernan who scored a big win over Elite MMA fighter Zach Henson in his bout.

What to watch out for in Garcia Promotions’ 20th amateur fight card

HUMBLE, TX – Cage Combat 20 goes down tonight at the Humble Civic Center in Northeast Houston. Featuring a packed card for Houston MMA fight fans, Cage Combat 20 (CC20) will feature 15 fights overall with many of the top gyms in the area participating.

Undefeated amateurs meet at the top of the card with Dark Side’s Morgan Oriahi taking on Ryan Connelly out of 4OZ Fight Club. Both fighters are 3-0. The 30 year old Oriahi has finished all three of his opponents thus far while Ryan, 20 years of age, has done the same, except all his have been put away in the first round. Obviously both these guys are explosive and it should be an exciting matchup in the main event.

Speaking of explosive, the light heavyweight matchup between Elite MMA’s Danny Bennett (2-0) and Jordan Zendejas (2-2) should be just that. Danny was last seen blowing out a hobbled AJ Hoffman in a minute’s time in their bout while Jordan has steadily improved, winning his last 2 bouts for SCC after starting his ammy career off as a heavyweight. He’ll need that improvement here as he takes on the athletic and skilled Bennett.

Elsewhere on the card, local favorite Dayron Vasquez (3-1) takes on the winless EJ Turner (0-4). Though the matchup may be a bit odd, Dayron’s skill set isn’t as he has impressed in his three wins. And his only loss remains in his debut against a really good pro prospect in Sage Northcutt. Expect a win here for the 22 year old Dayron out of McCall MMA but it’s MMA so anything could happen.

Other prospects to watch out for at Cage Combat 20 include the always intense Zach Henson taking on another guy to watch in Jake Heffernan out of the well-respected Gracie Barra North gym led by Alex Morono. Ever-polarizing former street fighter Clarence Brown also returns against Alonzo Sanchez while 4OZ “caveman” Craig Grove takes on Nick Ortiz.

Cage Combat Results and Recap - Lozoya scored big KO in Houston

HUMBLE, TX, October 7, 2013 – Garcia Promotions was back at it again in Northeast Houston this past Friday night with their fifteenth Houston MMA amateur event, aptly named Cage Combat 15. The card featured 13 fights in total and based on the feedback we’ve gotten from our team in attendance, it was yet another great show put on by Eric Garcia and Jace Pitre in preparation for and leading up to their Fury Fighting Championships professional MMA promotional debut this coming November.

As for last Friday, Cage Combat 15 was supposed to featured a title fight in the main event at bantamweight with ammy veteran Manny Lozoya taking on Kingwood MMA’s young gun Garvens Brun. Unfortunately and despite his lean physique, Manny Lozoya failing to make the planned 135 lbs. weight limit by six months so the whole championship idea was scrapped. One thing Manny Lozoya didn’t fail to find however was Garvens’ chin early in the second round with the veteran landing a haymaker to end the bout in impressive fashion.

Manny Lozoya now improves his amateur record to an impressive 7-3, which begs the question “how much longer until he goes pro?” No doubt he’ll need to correct the weight cutting issue before taking fights at the pro ranks but he’s certainly got the experience should he decide to take that step sometime soon.

Meanwhile for Bruns (now 2-1), he has nothing to hang his head over considering he performed admirably in the fight up to that point. At only 17 years of age he can afford to hang back and worry about other pressing issues like school then hit the gym hard again in a few months time and resume collecting on his potential, which he has plenty off.

Also highlighting the Cage Combat 15 card was a co-main event features Team Tooke’s Cameron Graves taking on Edward Longoria of Bushi Ban. As you might have seen in some of TXMMA’s Cage Combat 15 pre-fight articles, both these guys were labeled ‘prospects to watch’ with Graves in particular one to take note of. They didn’t disappoint that label in this one as the fight went from bell-to-bell. In the end Longoria gave Graves a tougher fight than most expected and while he didn’t get the finish (and was upset about it post-fight), Cameron did get to see the first extended test of his amateur career so far – always a good thing to experience early on for a prospect like him.

As for the rest of the card there were plenty of other highlight performances to be sure.

Jake Snyder comes to mind with his first round TKO of Yan Digalov but Kyle Villarreal, Calvin Cooper, Cody Owens, Robert Walker and Jonathan Butler come to mind as they all scored finishes in their respective fights.

Five Amateur Prospects to Watch at Cage Combat 15

Cage Combat 15 features bantamweight title fight; Up-and-coming prospects

HOUSTON, TX, October 1, 2013 – Garcia Promotions’ Cage Combat 15 takes place this Friday night, October 4th at the Humble Civic Center in Northeast Houston. At the time of this writing, this Garcia Promotions event is set to feature thirteen fights in total and will be headlined by a title fight in the bantamweight division with Manny Lozoya of Silverback Fight Club taking on Garvens Brun of Kingwood MMA in the main event of the evening.

The show also features some other talented young prospects looking to make their names known on the Houston MMA scene. Let’s take a look at some of them in further detail in this, our Cage Combat 15 Event Preview.

Five Amateur Prospects to Watch at Cage Combat 15

Manny Lozoya (6-3, Silverback Fight Club)

At 6-3 overall Manny Lozoya has been around the local scene for quite some time. The 24 year old started fighting way back in 2009 and has fought in four title fights already. This Friday October 4th will mark his fifth such opportunity when he faces undefeated Garvens Brun of Kingwood MMA for the Garcia Promotions bantamweight title.

Looking at his last few fights Manny has won two in a row following his defeat to Ramiro Cortina at Legacy Amateur Series. He’s no doubt faced some struggle in this fight camp with the shuffling around of coaches and fighters going on at Silverback Fight Club so it remains to be seen how that affects him in this fight. No matter, if he wins Lozoya will be standing on a 7-3 amateur record. That in and of itself should put him one step closer to turning pro as one of the most experienced amateurs in the area.

Garvens Brun (2-0, Kingwood MMA)

Admittedly we haven’t seen too much of Kingwood MMA’s Garvens Brun but we do know he is one of their brightest young prospects over there at Tom McCusker’s fight camp. At just 17 years old and with two fights behind him Brun already has two wins by TKO. He’ll be going from the frying pan and straight into the fire in his third bout against his most experienced opponent yet in Manny Lozoya, a nine-fight amateur veteran. The good is that this one will be for a title so there’s a lot of upside in it for Brun, who gets to see exactly where he is at as a Houston MMA prospect in just his third fight in and use is as a barometer to improve on no matter what the outcome of the fight is.

Cameron Graves (2-0, Team Tooke)

As we indicated in our Cage Combat pre-fight interview with Cameron Groves, this young man Cameron Graves is one of the elite few amateur fighters in Houston we would consider a ‘blue chip’ prospect at this point in his career; meaning he has some decent pro potential should he make that move down the line – and he will, probably sometime in mid-to-late 2014.

Looking at his two amateur fights thus far Cameron Graves has performed admirably. He faced an aggressive and relatively seasoned opponent (Jose Ceja, 2-0 pro) in his first bout and blasted him straight into the highlights with a second round head kick knockout. Then in his second bout he faced an even more experienced opponent in Paradigm’s Edgar Juarez, who at that point had a 5-2 record. Despite the experience gap Cameron handled that fight like a pro, eventually winning by second round triangle choke after a well-rounded performance.

Cameron Graves will be taking on another experienced opponent in Edward Longoria at Cage Combat 15.

Edward Longoria (3-1, Bushi Ban / Bloodline)

At 3-1 overall this far in the amateurs Edward Longoria is just starting to make his name known on the local Houston MMA scene. He recently had his first shot at an amateur title when he faced Tony Orozco Jr. at Cage Combat 14, losing by unanimous decision to Orozco, who’s been around for some time as a fighter and coach with Silverback Fight Club. It doesn’t get any easier for Longoria this time around at Cage Combat 15 when he faces another stiff test in Cameron Graves but a win over the Team Tooke fighter would certainly cement Edward Longoria as a name to look out for moving forward into the future.

Calvin Cooper (1-1, TBD)

At just 1-1 with a loss to former Cage Combat champ Trevin Giles behind him in his debut and a first round TKO win at EAC 6 over Andrew Rowan after that, Calvin Cooper doesn’t have much a record to go off just yet. It’s hard to gauge him on those numbers alone but one thing we’ve heard about is his raw ability and strength from those that have trained with him. If he’s anything like the mini-Derrick Lewis that they say he is, then that’s enough to include him here based on potential along. We’ll see what he really is when he takes the cage against Jason Perez this Friday night.
