"Okay, now what's this one?"
"That's The Swing, by Jean-Honoré Fragonard! It's a 18th century oil painting."
"Yes! You're going to do so well on the test," Maya says proudly, putting the flashcards back down onto the desk. She carefully aligns them as she continues, "We have a couple more days to practice, do you want to meet at the library later?"
"Of course we can, will Harper come too?" you reply as you clean up your own supplies, mostly pencils and paper from the few quick sketches you had done throughout class.
"I can arrange that, she'd love to come as well."
You smile and nod, then look up at the time. The bell was about to go and the rest of the class had started packing up their things.
"Alright class, make sure you study for the exam, I don't want to be failing everyone…" Mr. Montgomery says, his eyes connecting with yours for a moment. Your roll your eyes. He'd never fail you in a million years… you hope. You say your farewells to Maya as she gets up, right on the bell. You pause as you hear Cain call your name. "Stay back for a minute, please."
"Ohhh someone's in trouble!" Charles comments, but he shuts his mouth once Cain stares at him, eyes like daggers. He rushes out of the classroom before any blood could be spilt.
Soon enough, the class had dispersed and both you and Cain were left alone in the classroom. Nothing was said for a moment, the only things that could be heard was the soft chatter of university students walking by, making their way to the cafeteria. You finish putting everything away, then pause as you hear his footsteps coming closer.
"You wouldn't fail me," you say with a small smile, staying still and not turning around.
"Hm, not sure about that one. Your grades here… tell me otherwise," he teases, dodging you as you spin and swat at his arm.
"My grades are fine, I don't know about my teacher though… he may be a bit clueless."
He acts offended, but yet couldn't contain the small smile that peaked through. "I am very knowledgeable in this subject, thank you very much."
"Oh yeah, because 'Pietà' really is all about trust falls."
He rolls his eyes. "I think it was a well thought out plan in the end. Better than what Abel can do." He pauses, his eyes watching you for a few moments before he continues speaking. "But that isn't what I kept you back for."
"And what might it be for?"
"You're very distracting, did you know that?"
You feel a warm blush creep up your neck, and you know for a fact it had crept onto your cheeks by the way he smirks at your reaction. You break eye contact, trying to gain composure. You couldn't help but feel butterflies under his gaze, so dark yet, there's a softness in it when he looks at you. Something you rarely see with anyone else, preserved just for you.
Before you could reply, his fingers gently tilt your head back up, eyes meeting his. They were warm against your skin, slightly rough, yet so gentle. "Don't hide your face from me, that's a bit rude, don't you think?"
He doesn't let you reply, he just sighs and wraps his arms around your waist and burying his head in your neck. He pulls you closer so the planes of his body rest against yours, melting together like you both belonged here. A long sigh leaves your lips as you melt into his embrace, wrapping your arms around his neck. Sometimes you wish things could stay like this. No death, no blood, just peace, wrapped in your lovers arms. It wouldn't ever happen, but you could only hope that one day, just maybe, things could turn out different.
Your soon pulled from your thoughts as you notice his breath on your neck, then his lips. Gentle as a feather, barely even noticeable. Your heart thumps in your chest, loud enough that you could've sworn he'd be able to hear it.
He doesn't seem to notice and keeps gently kissing your neck, so soft you could only just feel it. "Cain…"
"Is this okay, do you want me to stop?"
You shake your head, holding onto him just a little bit tighter. He smiles against your neck then continues, his kisses becoming more exploratory, moving down your neck and along your collarbone. Your breath becomes shaky and you let your hands move down his back. You feel the soft fabric of his shirt against your fingers, his movements causing his muscle to ripple under your touch.
The silence gets broken by a voice at the door. "Mr. Montgomery? I need to ask you something!"
Cain pauses, groaning softly. "Not now, Charles."
"Please, it's important and about the exams."
Reluctantly Cain stands up again, fixing his shirt and brushing his fingers through his hair. "We'll continue this after, meet me after?" he whispers, squeezing my hand gently before letting go.
"We'll see" you tease, grinning as he shakes his head and shoos you off.
Once you both reach the door, he opens it and lets you out. "Remember to study, don't want me to fail you, do you now?"
You shake your head and head down the hallway, ignoring Emily and José who were standing to the side, phones out and looking like they were about to start recording something.
The cafeteria was more quiet than usual today, only a few students scattered around. Some were studying, others enjoying their lunch and speaking with friends. In the further corner you spot Maya and Harper enjoying themselves, giggling as they watched something on their phones. Maya gives you a warm smile once you reach them.
"Hey! We were just watching Josés' latest video, did you want to watch as well? We just started so we can roll it back a bit if you'd like?"
"Nah, I'm alright. I was going to get something to eat, did you guys want anything?" you ask as you sit your stuff down with theirs. They decline your offer, explaining they had plans for after and were going to get something to eat then.
You make your way to the front of the cafeteria to order yourself your lunch. Setting your hands down on the smooth, cold bench, you notice Florian working. His movements were careful as he frothed the milk, wiping down the nozzle and then poring it into the paper cup. He's been working like this for a while now and he's has greatly improved from the first time you witnessed him struggle to make coffee. He hands out the coffee, the student leaving and looking satisfied, then he notices you. A small, soft smile appears on his lips.
"Hey, what can I get for you?"
"A tall latte with oat milk please, and a chocolate croissant."
He smiles, putting down your order before beginning to make it. Your eyes follow his moments, while he was slow, the practice was becoming clear. He almost looked professional, he looked at ease with his stained apron and cup in hand.
"You're getting better at this," you comment, smiling as he spins around.
"You think so? Well… that's good to hear. Cassandra would be proud," he replies with a small smile, a fraction of pride falling through.
"She would be, soon you'll be taking over"
His smile grows even bigger as he grabs a chocolate croissant out of the glass cabinet and slips it into a paper bag. "Do you have any plans once you finish for the day? So many people are at the library studying at the moment…"
A faint blush paints your cheeks as you get reminded of the fact Cain had asked to meet you after school. "Well… I'm meeting up with Cain after, I'm not sure what he has planned."
His smile falters for a moment, but he quickly adjusts himself and puts his usual calm demeanor back on. "Oh really? Sounds fun."
"I hope it will be, I really don't know what you expect…"
Florian just nods and goes to cleaning up the used mugs. "Hope it goes well."
You watch for a moment as he cleans each mug, sitting them evenly on the shelf. He does seem to be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes, and it's almost cute. "Thank you, enjoy the rest of your shift. Talk soon!" You bid each other farewell and you make your way back to the table with Maya and Harper.
Harper looks up first, raising a brow at you. "What was that about?"
"What do you mean?" you ask, puzzled.
Maya pipes up, setting the phone down. "We saw you talking with Florian, he looks. I don't know. A bit sad?"
"I don't think so… he can be pretty quiet and solemn sometimes. Maybe work has been a little rough on him?"
You look back over your shoulder, watching as he makes drinks for a few other students. He didn't seem too different to how he usually was. Maybe a little bit more quiet, but work can be tiring. Maya nods, following your eyes to watch him as well. "I hope he's doing okay."
The three of you continue your lunch, chatter filled with laughter over Josés' videos and plans for the weekend. Soon enough, the bell rings and you all head off to your normal classes. Nothing much happens, but the excitement in your chest grows with each passing hour. Each hour closer to whatever Cain has been planning. You aren't expecting anything too crazy, although you wouldn't put it past him to do something a bit extravagant if he really tried. Besides, he had Giuseppe's help. Anything could be possible with the both of them combined.
Soon enough, the end of the school day has come. You sit on one of the seats outside the university, watching people get into cars or begin walking home. The sun beamed down upon you, making you squint as you try to see if you could pick out Cain from the crowd's of students.
After not being able to see him, you grab your phone from your pocket to pass the time. Although, there wasn't anything very interesting. Josés' videos were nothing different from what he always posts, eventually making you put your phone away so you didn't have to witness them every few posts.
"Lovely day, don't you think?"
The voice pulls you out of your trance, everything around you falling to the back of your head. Your eyes follow the voice to meet Cain's, soft, golden, looking down at you with a small sparkle of anticipation. He had taken off the sweater he normally wears to his classes, now replaced with his normal button up shirt.
"Yes, it's really nice out today," you pause for a moment, studying him, trying to figure out what he was planning, or even hiding. "What are you planning… some sort of evil scheme?"
"Me? Evil scheme? Pft, that sounds like something Abel would do. But no, that's not it. One could call it… perhaps a date?"
"A date? How romantic" you tease, taking Cain's hand when he offers. His fingers slip into yours, giving them a small squeeze as he gently guides you. The short walk to his car remains silent, a comfortable silence. One that you could feel at peace in, despite spending it with someone like Cain. He was a serial killer after all.
Inside the car, Giuseppe was waiting for you both in the drivers seat. "Good afternoon, I hope you're doing well?" he asks, watching as Cain helps you into your seat through the rear-view mirror.
"Yes, thank you. I hope you're doing good as well!"
"I'm doing quite well myself," he replies with a smile. He begins to drive once Cain gets into the seat beside him. You watch him closely as he pulls a paper bag out from under the seat, fiddling with it for a bit before pulling a small box out and sitting it to the side.
His eyes dart up to the rear-view mirror, raising a brow as he realizes you were watching. "Snooping, are we?"
"You were doing it right in front of me, I was simply observing my surroundings."
He chuckles, slipping the box into his pocket. "Must be learning from the best?"
You shrug playfully, grinning as you watch his reaction. "Or maybe I'm just that good." You look out the window for a moment, watching as trees fly past the window, slowly becoming denser. Warm light filters through the leaves, warming your skin as it hits you through the open window. There was a soft, summer glow to everything here, wherever here was. "Where are we going? You're being very secretive about it."
"Only because it's a surprise. I can't just go ahead and spoil it for you. That makes it no fun."
The drive lasts for at least an hour and soon enough you were surrounded by dense forest. The sunlight was only just peaking through the leaves. The road Giuseppe was driving on soon becomes replaced with a narrow dirt road, pebbles lining the sides. This road leads you to a small clearing with a log cabin built in the center, and not far from it, a small lake.
"Woah… what is this place?"
"Another one of my little homes. It's not as impressive as my Villa's, but it will do. Plenty of privacy…" the meaning of his words don't get lost on you and you feel you cheeks become warm. Your fingers play with the threads of your shirt as Giuseppe parks just out the front, not too far from the cabin.
It was only small, it almost felt like a shed if you were to compare it to his Villa you stayed at not too long ago, or his mansion. Each log was perfection, stacked in a intricate pattern to create such a warm and cozy feeling. Small plant pots were scattered around the front entrance, surprisingly well looked after. You wonder if he had the time to come water them himself, or if he hired someone else to do so. He takes your hand and leads you to the front door, which was decorated with stained glass, casting colored light onto the ground near your feet.
Cain couldn't help but watch you as you take it in. The way your nose scrunched ever so slightly, taking in the fresh air and the smell of wildflowers. The way your eyes darted back and forth from each plant pot, every knot in the wood, even the perfectly crafted hand railings. But what he had to admire the most, was you.
He gets the cabin unlocked and lets you settle in the living room. The inside was cozy, yet had so much too it. A whole wall was covered in books, both Cain's and Giuseppe's choosing, you realized once you read a few of the titles. Cain moves to the kitchen quickly with Giuseppe, speaking about something you couldn't quite catch.
You let yourself wander around the room, taking in everything. Your fingers skim across a picture frame, slightly dusty from age. It contained a older and slightly damaged photo, of a younger Cain and Giuseppe, where Cain was wearing a power rangers costume, and Giuseppe a poorly made looking monster costume. It almost looked as if Cain had tried to make it himself. It thumps softly as you set it back down, eyes darting back around the room before settling on Cain, now standing in the doorway with his arms folded across his chest.
"Well, are you ready for the actual surprise now?" he asks with a small smile. Seeing his smile was precious, sometimes it felt like you barely see it at all. But at times like these, alone with you, his true feelings come out. He doesn't do the best at hiding them either.
"Lead the way then."
He takes you by the hand once again and you both leave the cabin. The clearing the cabin was built within was speckled with wildflowers, filling the place was small and subtle splashes of colour. The wind gently played with Cain's hair and his clothes, then your own. You take in his face for a moment. He looked at peace, his body relaxed for once, like he was where he belonged. Where he wanted to be.
The soft brushing of the grass against your legs soon turns to a small thump each time your feet connect to the wooden docks that surround the lake, creating a walkway. Ducks dive into the water, their tails wagging and their song being carried by the wind, accompanied by a few birds in the treetops and crickets. Waterlilies bloom close to the shoreline, a vibrant array of pink, green and white.
At the other side of the clearing, stood a tall and proud willow tree, its branches reaching for the crystal ripples of the lake and the soft blades of grass. The curtain of leaves parted as Cain brushes his hands against them, moving them out of the way for you. The warmth of his hand moves from your own hand down to the small of your back, and with the other he grabs his phone. A few moments later, the soft sound of a piano comes from it and he chucks it to the ground.
"Would you care to dance?"
"Why yes, kind gentleman."
He grins, taking your hand in his and pressing you closer to him. His breath brushes against your cheek, and you both begin to slowly sway to the music. There was no real purpose, only being close to one another, feeling the warmth and love from this special moment. You melt into each others embrace, letting the warmth of his body pressed against yours calm you from any nerves and anxiety that had been growing due to university.
"Since when were you actually sort of good at dancing?" you ask, giving him a teasing smile as he pretends to be offended.
"I've always been good at it, you've just never seen it. Abel isn't the only good dancer." He spins you around before pulling you close again. Your eyes flick to the scar on his neck before going straight back to his eyes. They were watching you carefully, you could almost call it lovingly.
"Did you bring me all the way out here just to dance?"
"No, I have more. You have to be patient for the rest of it." He spins you around again, only this time he pulls you in quicker so you were now facing away, your back pressed against his chest. His arms curl around your waist and his head rests in your neck while your bodies still slowly swayed to the soft rhythm. "Although… there's one thing I'd like to share with you now."
You open your mouth to question him, but he was already pulling the same box you saw earlier from out of his pocket. "What's this…?" you ask, but receive no answer as he takes something small out of it.
Cold metal touches your neck as he drapes a small, but beautiful necklace around your neck. He fiddles with the clasp for a few moments before finally adjusting it. The small charm that sat against your collarbone was engraved with your initials, the gold sparkling in the sunlight that filtered in from above.
"Cain… this is beautiful." you whisper, your hand going up to feel the cold metal. It felt delicate in your hands, the chain was quite thin.
"I'm glad you like it. It took me a long while to pick out the right one, took even longer when Abel found out what I was doing and just had to pitch in."
You giggle and spin to face him, wrapping your arms around his neck. "Thank you. I really love it."
He smiles softly, wrapping his arms back around your waist. "It's my pleasure, my sweet." He slowly leans down, mouth inching closer to yours. He's slow, giving you a moment to pull away, his eyes asking for permission. Once you nod, his lips press against yours and you feel his body melt away beneath your touch. His lips were soft, moving ever so slightly with yours. His hands move up your back, one of them cupping your jaw and lifting your face slightly to deepen the kiss. Your skin tingles as his fingers then curl under your chin, keeping your head in place.
When you both finally break apart breathless, he couldn't help but smile, foreheads resting against each other's. You watch him and the way his cheeks were rosy, his breathing just a little uneven, and the way he looked lighter than before. This was your Cain, here in the present with you. Enjoying the little things.
Enjoying you.
