HE DOESN'T SAY IT LIKE HE'S INCREDIBLY PROUD. He says it like it'a a simple fact—no. He says it like it's a joke.

Cain wonders if he is allowed to joke back without losing a few fingers. He cannot help himself—there is a need to be a little less serious than this dynamic requires, or else he will go insane.

Cain laughs harshly. He’s remarkably put-off.

As a professor, as a part-time yet incredibly devoted resident of Kieran’s community, Cain has grown accustomed to a certain age range, a certain type of person. And he’s almost allowed himself to forget that other people exist — people even younger than his students, people even more precocious than Kieran’s darling little flings. 

“Do you talk to your parents like this?” He anticipates a sob story.
