The abandoned town of Cairo, Illinois
CAIRO'S "WHITE MONSTER" - Cairo, Illinois. On the evening of Tuesday, July 25th, 1972 (at approximately 7:30 p.m.) a Cairo native by the name of LeRoy Summers allegedly encountered a strange creature while jogging near the Ohio River levee. Summers reported to Cairo Police that he saw a "10-foot tall, hairy creature" standing near a brick building by the levee, in the area between 17th and 28th streets. He further described, to officers, that the enormous monster was "white with a reddish band" around it's mid-section and that the two-legged "Bigfoot creature" had a "large head." Summers, frightened by the bizarre cryptid, promptly turned around and jogged in the opposite direction at a quickened pace - according to his account. Police investigated the incident, and the local media reported the encounter, but no evidence was gathered and no further reports were forthcoming. A string of encounters of "white" or "albino" Bigfoot creatures would permeate area towns further north (and dominate local media reports) in the following years, but the connection to the "Cairo Cryptid" seems unclear. The "White Monster of Cairo" still remains a mystery. American Travels: Part 2 of 2 (so far) The first stop, was Cairo (pronounced, apparently, Cay-Roh) Illinois. It is essentially a living ghost town. Out of every five houses we drove past, maybe 1 still had people there. Most of the buildings, and nearly all the businesses, are falling down. It was beautiful. A sad, lonely part of America holding on by the skin of it’s teeth. There was only 1 store open. It looks like it used to be a gas station, but the pumps are long gone. There is a massive wall, that I could kick myself for not getting a picture of. If you drive through the gap in it, make a super quick turn. Because the Mississippi is right there. We saw a tugboat go up and down hauling a massive barge. I do not know what was being shipped. We sat where Shadow met Jackal and Ibis. Saw what i think is probably the bridge he found Mad Sweeney under. It was hot, sweaty, and there were a LOT of cicada. If you get a chance, drive to Cairo Illinois. It’s a strange, haunting place. Also, we saw a funeral home named Crain, but that is probably just a coincidence.
