“She knew I liked him..” you hiccuped, face buried in your palms as you shook from your tears.
Zayne quietly sat beside you in your room that went through a hurricane from your turmoil. Usually, your best friend would’ve clicked his tongue and scolded you like a mother as he picked up messy clothes from the floor, and piled dirty glasses, water bottles and snack wrappers from late night study sessions.
Now was not the time. You leaned against the wall, perched on your chunky dorm bed, tears blurring your vision while Zayne sat as well.
“She knew about my crush on Caleb since…I don’t know, since high school!” You flung your hands in exhaustion. “She even told me she’d ask for me..” Zayne wasn’t the best at comforting.
And He knew, that MC wasn’t a good friend from the start, ever since you became overly close with her.
She seemed sweet, until things didn’t go her way. And Zayne would argue the bratty behaviour came from the over-coddling from none other than her best friend, Caleb, who everyone thought the two were all over each other. Now, after her drunken instagram post from a college party, was a Live Photo of Caleb, pinning his “just a best friend” up against the wall, fiercely kissing her as she fisted her hands in his shirt.
Caleb didn’t even do parties.
MC was much more social than you, which explained the party you weren’t invited to.
It was crazy to think that the afternoon before, MC was raiding her closet for an outfit as you laid on your tummy on her bed, scrolling. “Ugh, seriously [name]! One party isn’t gonna kill you!”
“Do we not remember Nicki who banged up Gideon and now she’s pregnant?” You murmur, remembering when MC had gossiped to you about it.
“Protection’s a thing y’know, wrap it before you tap it!”
She called back before walking towards you with two tank tops.
“Red or black? And anyways, unless you plan on talking to a certain someone…” (she winked) “then just stay with me the whole night! Y’know, make sure I’m alive and come back home.”
You sighed, burying your face into the plush mattress and letting out a loud groan. “Red makes you look hot, and also, you know I’m too shy to go up to him.”
“Fine, suit yourself.” She muttered, clearly exasperated at you and at the fact that you wouldn’t come. Or even talk to the guy who you’ve swooned over since freshman year.
But now, the girl who knew everything about you, had stabbed you in the back.
Zayne got up and left the room quietly before coming back with a plastic bag of snacks from the convenience store, setting them down, and making himself comfortable in his spot again, crossing his legs.
“I always found it quite alarming how close they were, for ‘just friends’.” He murmured. He rummaged through the bag, to find your favourite snack, with your favourite flavour, and handed it to you.
You took it with hands shaking and giving him a wobbly smile. “What would I do without you? Who’d remind me of all my stupid mistakes?” He half smiled.
“I wonder. Has she spoken to you yet?” You shook your head, sniffling as you bit down. “I thought she was my friend.” You repeated once again, but before you could continue, Zayne had firmly placed his hand on yours that rested on the bed.
His palms were warm, and his hands looked larger and more veiny in comparison to yours. Surgeon hands, or rather, med student hands. “Just think for a moment. She would always get upset with you whenever you didn’t do what she liked, gave back-handed compliments, and didn’t ever listen whenever you talked.” You fell silent, and he continued.
“Just how many times did she promise to talk to her friend for you, and actually went through with it?” “She would forget.. get busy..” you croaked out.
You both knew of the feeble excuse that was.
“She was one of your best friends, correct? Aren’t I one as well?” And his hand moved from yours, to touch your jawline, wiping away running tears as he leaned in. “I can count every single food you don’t like. Every single thing you’ve ever said to me, since children.” He whispered.
“Because I care.. I’ve always cared. Silently, and here for you.”
“Zayne..” you whispered shakily.
“I’ll never be Caleb.”
“I know that.”
And with that, he leaned in brushing your lips with a soft kiss, that turned rougher and rougher from the second. From the man, who had always yearned for you. And from you, who had nothing else to lose, but him and yourself lost in this love. It was always him. And it always would be.
Please consider giving my posts some love! I love you all <3

Also Im writing genderfluid Rafayel because I can, and its Pride month, and I feel like a god should be able to change their gender whenever they want.
The instagram photo dump was taken down eventually, but it didn’t redo the irreparable harm MC knew she caused on you, but as well as one other, Zayne.
The stoic tall and emerald eyed gentlemen, with elegance as he acted, thought with logic and grace as he said his mind and despite how indifferent he was when it came to social status, that was all who she pined for. It was frustrating to her and hilariously pathetic that MC, the Regina George with three other guys ( a business major, some art student and some kid that just sleeps in class?) pining after her didn’t include the handsome med student.and it didn’t help how unnervingly humiliating he was whenever she ployed and set up little “traps” for him to find his way to her.
Now, after finally shattering her only chance to get close with her from you, she found herself trying to call you. You watched your phone face up, buzz and vibrate around your bedside table, messages and calls flourishing, from not only MC, but Caleb as well.
For Caleb, he never truly was in love with you. He saw you as a good influence for his bratty best friend, his true love and was oblivious. It was only until that night, where MC had finally kissed him.
It was everything he had imagined. Fierce, passionate. A kiss only for the two of them in their little world. For nobody else.
Not as a revenge ploy to be spread onto his friend’s large audience in social media.
As the phone buzzed rhythmically, you were ready to pick it up and hurl it out the window, before Zayne swiftly swiped the phone and silenced it before putting it down again. “And I’m assuming you’d wish to not speak to either of them in person either?” “You’d assume right.” You sigh, flopping face down onto Zayne’s bed before rolling just enough to reveal your huffed out face. Would he immediately fix the now scrunched up quilt the second you got up again? Yes, but for now he sat beside you.
“Does it still hurt?” Zayne murmurs softly.
“The betrayal, from your friend, when she..” Zayne didn’t dare to utter the rest.
For how long did he lie awake, imagining all his opportunities if could just ask you out since grade school. How long was he cheering for you on the sidelines when he wanted to be on a team where there was only you and him? For how long did he swallow his emotions for yours, because to him, you were more than him. Maybe it was just his luck, lady fortune smiling down on him when both people in your life he grew less fond of and deemed unworthy, yet the pain of losing two people was prominent indeed.
You looked at him. “Kissed him?” You finished, and notice his very faint nose scrunch.
You sit up, placing your hand on top of his cool one: “well, I never can lie to you, Zaynie. It did hurt. I was upset, not because I was and am still in love with Caleb, but how MC - now that I think about it, didn’t care about me.”
You turned up to look at him, giving him a smile before leading him to lie beside you onto the bed again and taking off his glasses.
“But, I had someone to truly mend my heart again, didn’t I, Dr. Cardiologist?”
You booped his nose as he pulled closer to return your antic with a nose to nose nuzzle. “Cardiologist in the making, but I would do anything for you.” He leaned in, whispering.
“I hope you know that.” You giggle, feeling his hand on your waist. “But, you will have to face them eventually, you may have hid from them for a few weeks, yet you can’t dodge them the whole time.” You sigh, cradling his face. “No, I can’t. But for now, I’ve planned a date for our one month anniversary at that new dessert place for tomorrow. “
It had been a little bit of a month and a half since Zayne kissed you.
He wasn’t Caleb. If anything? He was the polar opposite of what you thought of Caleb. And MC knew that. She was fuming that night that changed it all. She knew you liked him, but it wasn’t like you did anything. Was her best friend practically grew up hot? Yes, and that doesn’t mean he was all to yourself. Because in truth, despite MC, her crush on your close friend, she wasn’t ever planning on letting Caleb go.
Especially not to you. She only hung out with you for you to get the stupid hint and set her up with Zayne. But that never seemed to cross your mind. So why would she ever help you? Well, she wasn’t going to initially, but in a rage had she pulled Caleb with a drink in hand, in the dark red and blue lighting as the music was heavy, Caleb towered over her, eyes blown wide as if he was contemplating if his dream was truly real. That all the coddling, comforting and support he had for MC, didn’t go to waste, that he could finally take her away.. where only his and her love was there as they both kissed.
And when she pulled back, she was dragging him to an empty room. He felt like floating on a cloud, as he was pinned to the bed.
Too lost in lust, he dismissed MC’s “maybe that (name) bitch finally will get the hint that you don’t want her.” It was only till morning, MC was out of sight as his blanket was the only thing giving him decency. She was gone. And Caleb pretended that didn’t break him a little.
Weeks went by, and MC and Caleb dated. Caleb felt like living in a dream. All the photos of her kissing his cheek before posting it, dates around campus, everywhere. But something was off. Something was truly off when all of a sudden, MC decided last minute to go to a new dessert cafe, yet he ignored it.
It was a beautiful day, and you and Zayne both decided to enjoy the complimentary ice cream to share they gave you outside.
As Zayne was opening the door for you, another hand on your shoulder, the bell jingled with the door being pushed. Your eyes widened, gripping the ice cream.
“Babe, isn’t this a great place to… oh! (Name)!! And… zaynie!”
MC smirked with a nasty grin as she gripped onto Caleb’s shoulder overexaggerating.
.Please don’t call me that.” Zayne murmured, pulling you closer.
MC had noticed, her bitter smile contorting into a sullen expression before plastering a fake smile (from her fillers) and pushing the both of you back inside. “Come! Let’s catch up!”
And she sauntered inside. Caleb gave you and Zayne a sheepish smile, head down. You sat back down on your previous seats. Zayne leaned down to whisper that “we could leave if you wish.” “No, I wanna hear what they’d like to say.” You whispered back. “So! (Name), we haven’t spoken in a while, hm? Hanging out with Zayne here?” “We were celebrating our anniversary.” Zayne cut in coldly. MC’s eyes widened. “Anniversary? For.. for what?” Her veneers were showing a little too brightly. “Our one month of dating.” You replied simply.
You swore you’ve never seen her nose scrunch up so tight.
“You… dating Zayne? Your bestfriend?” “I don’t see a problem with it. After all, you’re dating someone you knew I’ve always liked until a month ago.” Caleb choked on his straw. “You…I… what?” He stared at MC. “I.. I’ve always loved you babe! I mean it!” She squeaked, gripping his bicep and nuzzling her cheek on his arm. And for a moment, stupid Caleb almost bought her act before Zayne picked up his phone and started looking for something. “That’s quite interesting. MC, Do you remember when you sent me your ‘notes’? Your explicit ones last month?”
MC, you and Caleb all gasped like in a soap opera drama.
You stood up. “You know what MC? I’m done. All these years you stepped on me, thinking you were better than me. I’m ashamed that I ever called you a friend. You take Caleb, you take all my other crushes, and now you were trying to take my true best friend away.”
You were close to tears.
Zayne towered behind you, rubbing your arms, ice cream forgotten.
Meanwhile Caleb had nobody to shoulder on, his expression deflated as he ran his p through his hair before scoffing. “I didn’t realize I spoilt you that much.” He murmured.
“Lebbie’-”
“I don’t wanna hear it” he spat out. “I’ve always loved you since we were kids, but you demanded so much from me. I’d give you my kidneys and my life for you. Now, I don’t even recognize you.”
MC was losing people by the minute. “Tell me, did you kiss me from spite?” “Caleb- I didn’t-“
“stop lying” Caleb gritted out, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. It was yours and Zayne’s time to leave. As you quietly slipped out, MC didn’t answer.
“Y’know I used to think we were meant to be together.”
“Baby..” “that we were soulmates. Hopelessly in love. I’d do anything for you. I’d even kill myself for you.” Caleb walked towards the counter, pulling out some cash to the sleepy blonde and clueless chef running the counter.
“Keep the change.” He muttered before striding towards the door.
“I guess you never loved me, or anyone, but yourself.”
And the bell jingled its harmony, but it felt bitter as it echoed across the empty store. And MC watched Caleb walk away from her life forever.
Watched the only girl friend she ever had leave.
She’d still be popular, boys running after her.
But now.. what was even the point anymore?
You and Zayne walked in silence to his dorm. He squeezed your hand in reassurance before you finally stopped. “I’m sorry..” you whispered. “For what?” He asked softly. “For not listening to you. For not realizing you were always the one. You loved me on the sidelines. And I was too stupid.”
Zayne guided you to a bench, before enveloping your body with his embrace for a minute as you sniffled, only then to pull away and cradle your face like you were the most stunning piece of art. “You weren’t stupid. You were just confused.” He whispered.
“What’s done is done. You have me now.” He kissed the tears, tasting and licking the salty drops away. “It still hurts. Hurts that she didn’t even feel an ounce of shame.” You croaked.
“Indeed, that must’ve been longer than four years worth of friendship.” He hummed. “I wish I listened to you..” Zayne stroked your frizzed hair.. “you have all of yours and my life to listen to me then and I have all the time to be patient.
After all, I’ve been in love with you my whole childhood. I can wait more..” you give him a teary smile, in which his sharp expression softened, only for you. He looked younger like this. He felt more alive with you. And he felt more alive as he leaned in to kiss you again. “I don’t ever want to be him, or MC. I don’t want you to be heartbroken like this again.”
