Chapter 5: April Showers Bring May Flowers
Ah spring, the season of change and new beginnings. The season where flowers bloom and trees begin to bud and blossom, where birds sing their sweet songs and the air is filled with the smell of fresh rain.
But it’s also the season where your allergies start to act up, blowing your nose for the upteenth time now as it begins to run again.
Time had passed by before you knew it; winter, the new year, and now spring, time just seemed to flow by pretty quickly to you for some reason.
You also recently got your summer uniform for school, seeing as how the weather was starting to warm up and people were seen outside more now than a couple months ago.
You and Luke are both sixteen now, your birthday having passed by not too long ago. It’s also been almost six months since you met Luke in the mountains, which means that the two of you have been friends for nearly half a year. When putting it that way, it sounds like quite some time, doesn’t it?
Speaking of Luke…for some reason, you noticed that he’s been acting strange lately; lately meaning the last couple days.
Luke is always smiling and cheery, as if nothing could dampen his spirit nor his mood. But lately, he would often stare out the window with a distant look on his face rather than pay attention to what the teacher is saying, and his shoulders have been hunched a little too, as if he’s carrying something heavy on his back.
Even his usual shimmering eyes have gotten a bit dull, and his warm smile is replaced with a deep frown set into his lips.
N-not that you were looking at his lips, of course! Of course not, why would you? Right…?
You groan in embarrassment as you roll around in your bed, plopping onto your stomach with a sigh as you press your cheek to your pillow, sniffling from blowing your nose so much.
You were worried about him, and though you’ve asked him a few times before if he was okay and what was wrong, he’ll always plaster a grin onto his face as he says, “Of course! Why wouldn’t I be?” Or, “Nothings wrong, why do you ask?”
Liar.
That’s by far the fakest smiles you’ve seen from him in the time you’ve known him, and while it made you even more worried, you didn’t want to keep probing him and constantly be asking him if he was okay. You also didn’t want to seem as if you were hovering around him, wanting to give him space to think just in case he wanted to be on his own.
And usually on your way home, he would be the one to strike up conversation and be chatty with you, but for the first time since the two of you walked home everyday together, it was just…quiet. And it unsettled you to say the least, you being the one instead to fill in the soundless void of his voice.
You let out a sigh as you take off your bedside lamp to go to sleep, wanting to put your overthinking mind to rest of all the possibilities of why he’s been like that.
After all, tomorrow is a new day, and maybe a new day will bring a new Luke with it.
Unfortunately, a new day did not bring a new Luke with it, considering he’s still the same as he’s been the past couple days.
You’ve barely seen or talked to him except for when you went to school together this morning, at classes, lunch and more classes, and now school is over and you’re packing your things preparing to go home.
You sigh to yourself as you put your things in your backpack, your mind churning with even more possibilities.
What if he’s sick? What if something bad happened? Or what if…this was the beginning of him drawing away from you? Realizing that you were boring and dull, just like all the other ‘friends,’ you had?
Just thinking about it makes your stomach churn with nausea, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath to collect yourself.
Did you trust too easily again?
‘No, I can’t think like this right now. Maybe it really isn’t what I imagine it to be at all.’ Is what you desperately think to yourself.
You let out an exhale to calm yourself as your eyes flit to the window and the darkening clouds above, holding the promise of rain.
“Good thing I brought my umbrella. I hope Luke brought his too, otherwise we’ll have to share one.” You mutter to yourself as you sling your backpack over your shoulders and exit the classroom.
You vaguely remember him having one with him this morning, though if you were wrong, you wouldn’t mind sharing one with him. After all…sharing an umbrella in the rain while walking home is kinda romantic…
‘Huh?’ You catch yourself as your cheeks bloom crimson, mentally slapping yourself as you speed walk down the corridor, as if that will take you further away from your thoughts.
You look everywhere for him, up and down the corridor, in the classrooms, the lunch area, but he’s nowhere to be found. Maybe he was waiting for you at the entrance?
When you make it there however, Luke isn’t there, but Caleb and Emcee are; their eyes flicking up when they catch your figure walking towards them.
“Hey! Heading home now?” Emcee greets you with a grin.
You give her a small smile in return. “Yeah, I am. How about you two? What are you doing just standing here?” You inquire curiously.
Emcee let’s out a scoff. “Dummy Caleb forgot his umbrella at home, and he’s been begging me to share the umbrella with him.”
“Come onnn pipsqueak, would you rather me get soaked in the rain?” Caleb says as he takes on an expression of mock hurt.
“Why can’t you just use your evol?!” She shoots back.
“Cause I can’t use my evol right now.” Obviously, that was a lie.
Your smile is bittersweet as you watch them bicker, the familiar feeling of jealousy pooling in your gut. While you’ve long since tried to give up on such ideas of Caleb ever reciprocating your feelings, the feeling of envy of never being able to fill that place by Caleb’s side like Emcee did resurfaced like an alligator in a swamp. Ugly and menacing.
But, you were still young, and you probably shouldn’t even be thinking about stuff like that and rather focus on your studies. That’s what the logical part of thought, that is.
“By the way,” Emcee suddenly says, “if you’re looking for Luke, he already left just now.”
“Huh?! He left and he didn’t tell me?!” You exclaim incredulously.
“Yeah, I don’t think he had an umbrella either.”
“Oh man.” You groan worriedly as you look through the door.
“Well,” Caleb chimes in, “why don’t we all just head home together? I’m sure he’s fine, maybe he just went out to get something.”
You shake your head. “You guys go on ahead, I’m gonna go find him.”
You don’t catch it since you’re not looking at him, but Caleb’s eyes darken a fraction when you reject the idea, staring at the worried crease between your brows as you adjust your backpack on your shoulders and grab your umbrella.
“Emcee, did you see which way he went?” You ask worriedly.
“Oh, uhhh…I think he went that way.” She says as she points down the way in which he supposedly went.
You nod. “Okay, thanks. I’ll see you guys later, okay? Get home safely!” You say as you exit the building and go in the direction that he went.
Silence stretches on between them as they also exit the building and watch your figure disappear down the sidewalk, save for the rustling of the wind in the trees and cars passing by on the road.
“She really cares about him…doesn’t she?” Emcee says thoughtfully as she breaks the silence.
Caleb’s jaw is set as he sees in the distance the way you skid on the pavement and almost fall from running too fast, quickly righting yourself as you begin to walk forward slowly before going into a sprint again.
“I guess.” He says dismissively as he takes the umbrella from her hand, the hardened look on his face just seconds earlier gone and replaced with the fond smile reserved just for her.
“Come on pipsqueak, let’s go home.”
Your breath comes out short and uneven as you run, your chest tightening with worry as you try to catch up to him. At this point, you didn’t even know if you were going in the right direction.
This has never happened before. It was simply just…out of character for him. Luke always told you when or where he was going even if he wasn’t obligated to. It didn’t matter if he was happy or not in the best mood, he told you pretty much everything as if you were his personal diary or something.
So for him to suddenly take off without saying anything, on top of him acting strange for the last few days, concerned you greatly. Friends look out for and take care of each other, a feeling which you felt strongly about due to past experiences.
You’re panting, out of breath, and your heart is in a panic when you finally, finally see his figure turn the corner in the distance.
Your stomach lurches in relief when you see him, and despite the burning ache in your legs, you push yourself to catch up to him.
Though, when you’re about to call out to him, you pause when you see the direction in which he’s going.
The…graveyard?
You’re leaning on the wall outside the entrance to the graveyard, catching your breath as your brows draw down together in confusion.
The graveyard? Why would Luke be at a place like that?
But the realization quickly dawns on you when you remember something that Rena said. Something about his dad passing away when he was little.
“Oh…so that’s why he’s been like that the past couple days.” You say thoughtfully, your voice tinged with a hint of sorrow.
He was probably thinking about and missing his dad, that’s why he’s been distant and kind of depressed.
‘What should I do?’ You think to yourself.
You didn’t want to interrupt his alone time with his dad, but also didn’t want to leave him alone by himself and go home. Maybe you’ll wait here for him until he’s done? You’ve probably been standing here for the past ten minutes now.
As you’re thinking about what excuse you’ll use when he finds you here, you feel something cold and wet land on your cheek, startling slightly at the sudden sensation.
You feel it again on your head, your nose, until it becomes a steady downpour; the rain drenching the earth and everything in its sweet essence.
You quickly undo your umbrella and hold it over your head, the pitter patter of rain landing on it and sliding off the top calming your racing heart.
But you suddenly realize, that if you continue to stand here, Luke will very likely get drenched in no time. And you would feel bad if you just left him there to get soaked.
With that in my mind, you slowly make your way into the graveyard, cautiously approaching Luke who’s crouched down by a gravestone.
You hesitate when you see his lowered head and the way he’s completely still, the rain beginning to soak into his honey brown hair and the back of shirt as it clings to his skin slightly.
You swallow nervously as you muster up your courage, getting a little closer as you stand behind him while maintaining a respectful distance; putting the umbrella over his head as you just…stand there. No words seemed to be needed at the moment, so you don’t say anything; not that you would know what to say anyway.
At first, he doesn’t move at all, and you start to wonder if he fell asleep or worse, if he was dead. But then…
A shift.
So slight someone from far away wouldn’t have been able to see it. But from how close you were standing to him, you could see the way his body becomes alert again.
Slowly, very slowly he lifts his head, still facing the gravestone. But then his head slowly turns to face you, those warm, familiar coral eyes looking up to meet your own.
The way his face looks makes your breath catch in your throat, sadness washing over you as your eyes soften.
His lips part slightly in surprise as he looks up at you, his eyes that have been so dull the past couple days are rimmed red and regain some of their shine when they meet yours. Strands of his hair stick to his forehead from the rain, and his clothes are dotted with fallen raindrops from the weeping sky.
“Hey.” You mutter softly, as if speaking like usual will break the peace of the resting souls in the area.
Luke swallows thickly before he mutters back even more softly, “hey.”
You give him a small, soft smile.
“You’ll get wet if you keep crouching here; possibly even catch a chill.” You scold him half-heartedly.
Luke smiles sadly as he looks down at the ground, letting out soft exhale.
“Yeah…I know.” He whispers as he looks back the gravestone; the name ‘Percival Pearce’ written on it with his date of birth and death.
“It’s strange,” he suddenly says, “I feel like crying…but for some reason…I can’t.”
His voice cracks at the end of his sentence as he hangs his head, making your heart squeeze with pain from his grief.
Hesitantly, you lift your hand to place it gently on his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him. “It’s okay, the sky will do that in your stead.”
The warmth from your hand and the gentleness in your voice makes Luke’s breath catch in his throat, burning with unshed tears as he lets out a shaky exhale.
You may not know it at the moment, but he felt a sense of comfort in your presence; from the way you just stood beside him, as if no words were needed. Because he knew. He knew you felt his grief, and he knew that, from being your friend for a bit now; that you were shy by nature. But that didn’t matter to him at all, he was just grateful for you being here with him in this moment, right by his side.
So on an act of impulse, he takes your hand from off of his shoulder and holds it in his, your palm warm and comforting against his cool one.
Your heart does a weird lurch when he does that, staring at your clasped hands and the way his nearly completely envelopes your own. Your ears burn and you’re grateful that he can’t see the way they turn an embarrassing shade of red as you internally scream to yourself.
‘No no no! I can’t be like this, especially when we’re in the middle of a graveyard!’ You think mortified, to yourself.
And when Luke finally stands to his full height while still holding your hand, you realize with a breath of relief…
…that he no longer looks like he’s carrying the world on his shoulders.
Before you left, you asked Luke if you could take him somewhere. Though what you really wanted to do was try to cheer him up a little.
He obliged with a nod, and the two of left while still holding hands; a fact that you didn’t know whether you should speak up about or not.
But he realized before you decided whether you should your not, his eyes widening as he pulls his hand away from yours, startled.
“Um-s-sorry! I-I didn’t realize that I-” He stammers, his cheeks turning pink as he flails his hands around nervously, scratching the back of his neck as he looks away from you.
“Uhhh- it’s fine.” You mumble, your cheeks also turning crimson.
Though you’re left with a feeling similar to when he hugged you back when you celebrated his birthday together. His comforting warmth that enveloped you then akin to when he held your hand today, and whenever he pulled away, you were left feeling strangely…empty.
These feelings confused you. Why would you feel this way? And why would you feel so nervous whenever he was close? At first, you brushed it off as you feeling anxious and cautious, but now you weren’t so sure anymore.
But you shouldn’t be thinking about yourself right now and these strange feelings. Today and right now, you were going to do your best to cheer Luke up!
“We’re here.” You say as you arrive at your destination. “Sit here, I’ll be right back.” You guide him to the bench outside the shop and slip inside before you he could protest.
“Here.” You say as you hold out a hot fudge sundae to his face. “We’re gonna have to share though. I thought I had enough money to get two, but turns out I only had enough to get one. So I was just going to get one for you but then I realized I had enough to get a large one, so I just thought, ‘why not get that and share it?’ Anyway do want to split it or should I-”
You’re rambling at this point when you finally look up, finding Luke gazing at you with a fond smile on his face.
The weight of his gaze suddenly makes you feel embarrassed. “Oh- uh, sorry. Do not like hot fudge? Or did you not want ice cream in the first place-”
“Ah- no! It’s fine, I love hot fudge!” He scrambles to reassure you as he takes the cup and spoon from your hands. “Come! Sit down.” He says as he pats the spot beside him on the bench.
You sit down next to him with an extra cup and spoon that you asked for in your hands, smoothing your skirt over your knees as you do so.
“Here. Take as much as you want, there’s plenty.” He says as he holds it out to you. “Or just split it so we don’t fight over who gets more or less.”
“Alright.” You say as you divide the ice cream evenly, scooping the milky cream with your spoon and into your cup.
“Thank you for the ice cream!” Luke thanks you after you divide it, taking a spoonful of it and stuffing it into his mouth.
“You’re welcome.” You say as you begin to eat your own.
The two of you sit in silence eating your ice cream as you watch the still falling rain, the raindrops falling against the roof you’re under a soothing rhythm.
“Aren’t you going to ask me something?”
You turn your head towards Luke when he suddenly breaks the silence, tilting your head at him quizzically as he glances at you.
“I mean,” he begins hesitantly, “you know…about earlier.”
That makes you pause. You could tell that he feels a little awkward talking about this, and you don’t want to make it even more awkward by being too curious, despite how much you were.
“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.” You reassure him, “I just..don’t want to leave you today. If that’s alright with you.” You mutter hesitantly.
Luke’s ears turn pink as he purses his lips together, taking another spoonful of ice cream as he mumbles. “Then…can I be selfish…and you ask you to stay with me?”
You feel the corner of your mouth quirk upward as you look at his burning ears, a chuckle bubbling up in throat at him suddenly being shy. “Sure.” You say softly.
“Thank you.” He says softly as he smiles at you, and it’s strange really, how the way a simple smile can wash away all the worry and unease you’ve been feeling the past few days.
But that’s the thing, it wasn’t just any smile.
It was Luke’s.

Ok ENJOY:
Caleb is just a big oversized baby in the mornings! Caleb x gn!mc
morning slipped through the curtains. You could feel Your husband Caleb from behind you, his arms loosely wrapped around your waist and legs snaking like an octopus around your own to prevent you from escaping.
You felt him slightly nuzzling into your hair as he gently snored. It felt too cozy to leave, with the ac running just cool enough to make you want to melt into your husband.
A shame that it was still a Thursday morning of work. In any minute, would your alarm-
“turn this shit offffff..”
Caleb groaned, burying himself deeper into your neck. You giggled, shifting your body to face him and cradle his face.
“Good morning, handsome.” You sang.
“Mm no.”
“Another glorious day of work today!”
“No.”
“Hm, wonder who you’re gonna yell at today! So many mysteries to uncover..”
“shut uppp.” he whines loudly And he pulls you in tighter. You squeal and try to pry his hand off of you. “calebb, we gotta get up!”
“Hmm, no we don’t.”
“Says who?”
“Says me.” He responds smugly and you scoff a laugh at how childish he was being. “I’ll go start to make coffee, that’ll wake you up…”
so after maneuvering from a clingy and whiny husband, you stood next to the counter, waiting for the hit water in the kettle to boil, when you felt those familiar warm hands tangling themselves again and a hard and arched chest pressed on your back, with a head inside your collarbone again.
You giggled as you felt lazy peppered kisses mark you. “You left me.”
“Baby, one of us had to be the responsible adult here, hm? We can’t miss work.”
“Can’t we just take the day off? I might explode again if I have to let go of you.”
You groaned and swatted his chest. “Caleb! Don’t say stuff like that!”
“It’s true! It’ll be your fault that the colonel died from a broken heart that’s now blasted into smithereens.”
You stirred sugar into your mug. “Hm, good! Maybe I won’t have to hear a certain 25 year old whining, huh?”
“You’re so mean to your Gege and husband, pipsqueak.”
I love my big baby. Also I had no loving arms to wake up to and instead just some kid pissing in the pool again. Taglist for Caleb: nobody because you all hate me
during sex, you’re so loud that caleb can’t help but laugh; feeling self-conscious, you simply lower your head while trying not to make any more noise. to cheer you up, caleb starts imitating your moans, and, even more embarrassed, you smack his arm.
"stop it! i’m leaving!" you say, blushing.
he just laughs. "i’d like to see you try." and thrust you more quickly.
i'm gonna fucking sob
