Im a fandom of one but by god I love this character. He’s a dumbass but I love him.
~ the following contains Spoilers if you haven’t seen the tv show ‘ressurection’ ~
Caleb Richards is the second ‘returned’ we’re introduced to, the first grown up. He has this real creepy vibe about him before he’s properly introduced (Caleb, only bad guys whistle ominously). He has two children who grew up while he was dead, but he only really seems to acknowledge the one, his daughter Elaine. But his son Ray is also there (although he is very much against the returned, and Calebs actions don’t really help his prejudice). At first Caleb denies remembering dying but he actually does remember, but he doesn’t want anyone to know because he died burying stolen money he just robbed from a bank. And you know what this idiot does, after declaring he wants to be a better father to his kids this time??? He murders someone, and then doesn’t lock any doors when he’s cleaning the weapon so of course he gets caught. He also tries digging to search for his money, finds his mask he used in the robbery and just… leaves it there… for anyone to find. Then - the most clever thing of all. He robs the bank again, the exact same way. He actually thinks he could get away with it, lay low for a bit. What a dumbass.
What really gets me about his character, is he seems to know things. He’s very mysterious. He somehow knows Agent Belemys deepest darkest secret, even having never met the man before. When he’s in jail (because of course he got caught), he alludes to the idea that he met this dead person from belemys past in the afterlife, but before he can expand on that (if he ever planned to), he suddenly disappears. Now, before disappearing, he does say another thing that leads to the theory that he knows stuff. He says ‘there’s more coming, more than you can imagine’, talking about the ‘returned’ and yeah, eventually there is a lot more. But… how did he know it was coming? The show completely just forgets this and never explains it (to be fair, the show doesn’t explain anything). But - the show does later try to explain the ‘disappearing returned’. Apparently, a returned can disappear when they no longer want to live, have nothing left to live for. I have a problem with this. Caleb had a reason to live, he was halfway though a conversation and was complaining of being thirsty. I don’t know. It just never seemed right. They seemed to be hinting that it was something to do with the Water (in the first few episodes, they theorise that maybe all the returned are linked with the river that flows though the town (although later it’s disproven but no actual answer is ever given)).
His whole death is also very dark in theme. His best friend found him having a heart attack while burying money. Did he really take Caleb to the hospital right away, or did he let him die first? Also he saw two teenagers who lost their only parent and didn’t offer them any support with the money their dad died to get them. You could almost argue Caleb was right to kill him. It was very stupid of him, but maybe not the most unreasonable thing. (In fiction. Please pursue legal action against any injustice in real life).
Anyway, big fan. I even read the book the tv series was based off for answers but he wasn’t in it. Although there was one sequence with a returned father who returns to his family, hangs out with them for a bit and then just disappears one day.
(Also you BET that every time something mysterious happened or there was about to be a reveal, every time I was just like ‘CALEB???’ Cause his story was sooo unfinished and left open. I’m so mad he was hardly ever even mentioned again. And that Ray grew to hate returned.)
