American Gothic and Supernatural - a Comparison

Content Warnings: Mentions of Rape, Suicide, Supernatural Elements, Abuse, etc American Gothic, aside from a genre, was a show that aired for one season on CBS (You can now watch it through the NBC website, if you want). It aired from September 22, 1995 to July 11, 1996, for 22 Episodes, and was pulled, supposedly for the show not fitting with the rest of the lineup for the week. It starred Gary Cole as Sheriff Lucas Buck, had Sam Rami as one of the creative minds and producers behind it, and was one of Sarah Paulson’s first shows (Before that she’d been in a stage play, an episode of Law and Order, and a Hallmark Made for TV movie). Personally, having watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it on more than one occasion, I think it was one of the shows that was ahead of it’s time, and a pretty good predecessor of Supernatural - including some interesting, albeit loose parallels.  Now, from here on out, this is gonna have some spoilers for American Gothic, so if you wanna watch it without those, maybe don’t read this until after. If you don’t mind spoilers, or are undecided about watching the show, read on.  First, the main differences between the two. The show’s main characters include Caleb - a young boy - Sheriff Buck, Merlyn - Caleb’s sister (and a ghost after E1) - Caleb’s cousin Gail, a Doctor, and some other minor characters. It all takes place in a small town called Trinity, where a bunch of weird things go down.  Now, for the things that seem to parallel.  First of all, the shows share a supernatural element. There’s never any real explanation on what exactly Sheriff Buck is, but he’s something Evil, and he uses his powers to hold control over the town. In many ways, he parallels Azazel and Lucifer, especially when you find out that he’s Caleb’s biological father, and raped Caleb’s mom while Merlyn watched, to conceive Caleb. SPN didn’t go that far, but it very much parallels Azazel tainting baby Sam with his blood, making him one of the Special Demon Blood kids.  While the show follows Caleb as a kid, orphaned, it’s about Buck trying to get custody of Caleb to groom him to take over as his successor, while Gail, Merlyn’s Ghost, and others try to keep Caleb on the path of the light.  This is a town the boys would Hunt in, with Buck as the Monster and Caleb as a potential threat.  Gage Temple (Caleb’s “father” as far as he’s aware at first), makes John Winchester look like a model parent. He’s an alcoholic who doesn’t know how to deal with what happened in his life and is violently abusive. In comparison, John Winchester is a Saint. One of the only redeeming things about Lucas Buck is that he kills Gage in Episode One (Well, okay, he uses his powers to make Gage kill himself, but eeeey)  Much like Azazel has Jess killed so that Sam returns to hunting, which is the path he needs him on, Lucas kills Merlyn and Gage, in his own way, to get access to Caleb. Much to his chagrin, other family steps up to take over.  The parallels are largely centric on Azazel and his plans for Sam, in comparison to Lucas and his plans for Caleb, but other elements exist. I’m gonna stop rambling and go rewatch American Gothic, though.
