the more I think about cal and marysia (< her bunkmate until akuze, that she loved without realizing it until she died in cal's arms), the more cal/kaidan makes sense. she loved someone and she always thought they'd have more time but they didn't, and she was left with this unresolved grief following her for years. and then she meets Another person who she feels something for again after years, and she doesn't want it to slip through her fingers. despite regs despite the mission despite everything

and she dies anyway and she comes back and she Understands his pain. she understands his reaction, she forgives him like it's breathing bc she thinks of herself finding mar alive but working for cerberus.... she would have the same reaction.

she loves him despite despite despite and it's only in me3 they're able to be together properly 🥲

“She going to be okay?” she asked with a tilt of her head.

“Hmm? Oh, yeah! She hurt herself running around the Citadel.”

She hummed in acknowledgment, and her gaze drifted back to the girl who’d now jumped off the bed and began playing with two kids and a makeshift ball. A disbelieving breath escaped her as a smile pulled the corners of her lips.

“I don’t know how they do it,” she stated. “They’ve escaped their home being destroyed, and here they are, still finding ways to be kids.”

Her gaze fell for a moment, trying to remember when she’d run around like that. Probably at a station, with other spacers. But the instances were far and few in between that left her with a distant longing.

“Yeah…” Kaidan agreed. “They focus on what we forget. It’s infectious, isn’t it?”

Shepard nodded, making no effort to move, which Kaidan took as a sign to keep talking.

“Kara, the little girl, told me that you are very pretty and that I should tell you I’m a hero—you know, to impress you—when she saw you staring,” he said and then smirked, raising his eyebrows. “Since she’s, and I quote, ‘too young for me, sadly'.”

“Always the ladies’ man, aren’t you, Alenko?” Cal laughed, turning her head to face him.

He ducked his head, cheeks slightly more red in color.

Something fluttered in her chest at the sight. Lately, the only emotion she’d seemed to evoke from him was anger, and for a long time it seemed like it would stay at that.

“Only with someone special.”

She sucked in a breath, reeling from the admission. The emotion that dared to infiltrate her heart was hope. That despite everything, they would be alright.

I've been consumed by bg3 these days so my brain has been on override thinking of paladin cal (oath of the ancients) and paladin/sorcerer kaidan (oath of devotion maybee/though that second part isn't something he shares but he has an innate ability for magic) and they meet and fall in love as soldiers but once they start venturing out of the military and start adventuring together with a group cal gets killed (in a brutal/can't get to her body type way so they can't use a scroll of resurrection or maybe they don't have one)

and cue a couple of years later them running into each other again, after cal has been brought back to life by a necromancer (against her will, cerberus style), but she’s been brought back Wrong and she’s an oathbreaker by simply existing as she is (going against nature and all that) and kaidan thinks she faked it while following the wrong path. i thought your oath meant as much to you as mine does to me. and how could he have been such a fool to not see that coming? while cal is struggling with even recognising her own face in the mirror, stark white hair and eyes more vibrant green. alone without a purpose and a pact she cannot escape. and she wants to tell him to feel the magic that’s been woven in her new psyche, because she knows he can as much as he denies it, but how could she ask him to take back a ghost when even herself rejects what she’s become

I like to think it was very deliberate of anderson to place cal as the sr1 xo, and kaidan as staff lieutenant. in a they're both dedicated people in their careers and they'll balance each other out way.
