A Homemade Galaxy

It was when you died

I felt the heaviness of God

Walking to the wake

You weighed upon my head

I neared holiness

A loving mother, standing tall

A dooming fear

A room for our dead

I was horrified

At the thought of Cape Cod, summer’s end

I can’t hear your phantom hum

It was late July around 10pm

When you knelt by my bed

My eyes peered into your soul

To ever unfold, a homemade galaxy

But I was too young to know it back then

I missed what you said, again and again

In a small pocket of the wallet there was an old “calling card” of hers — the size of a business card, it simply had Lillie’s married name, the address of their house, and her calling hours

So, my final rejoinder: maybe it’s old-timey, too quaint, and a relic of some white bourgeois heteronormative social structure. But in my opinion, it’s worth taking back — I’m not going to pull out some anti-internet, ‘we need to have real interactions’ argument, but for me at least, hosting calling hours has been a far more satisfying and nourishing way to get to know my friends better, get to meet new people, and feel like I’m a part of a community that cares about each other.
