Calliope Sanders was born in the famous town of Mystic, Connecticut and while tourists from all over the country loved to visit, she always had the desire to get out. It’s not that she hated it or anything, it’s just that Calliope always believed she belonged somewhere bigger. That is why as soon as she graduated high school, she began working two jobs while going to college part-time all in an effort to save up money to move to New York City or LA. Of course, this wasn’t a simple endeavor. Calliope faced her fair share of roadblocks including her loyalty to her hometown. Incredibly close to her family and friends, it was becoming more and more difficult to say goodbye which led to her extending her stay longer than she had planned.
Her brother made it even harder for her to leave once his addiction came to light and he had several stints in jail. Calliope became his sole supporter. Coming from a strict home, her parents were harsh in their disciplining of her younger brother which only pushed him out. Because of this, Calliope found herself filling the role of her brother’s keeper and the family mediator. She would never admit it but the task became overwhelming and her dreams of leaving Mystic were dwindling.
On Calliope’s 23rd birthday, her brother got into an accident that cost him his life. He had been intoxicated and it was one of the biggest car accidents to ever occur in the small town. Everywhere she went, Calliope was followed by people feeling sorry for her and her family and constantly checking in on them. She started to feel like there was no escaping the growing sadness she felt and so she knew her time to leave had come. After two years of mourning and somewhat mending, she decided to complete her college career in New York City, moving in with a friend in Queens. It was the most difficult decision she ever had to make. Now living in the city for about 6 years, Calliope has been able to use her pain to help others, becoming a rehabilitation counselor for young offenders. Along with her roommate, they started up the Enrichment Society, an organization whose mission is to support successful reentry from incarceration and promote alternatives to incarceration. Three scholarships are named after her brother and two others who had lost their lives the day of the car accident and are awarded to young members of the society who have shown resilience and diligence. She’s also a freelance tattoo artist and offers her abilities on weekends to those who want to correct an unwanted tat or to provide someone with a positive one.
Calliope is very much a New Yorker now, especially a Queens lover. Her story may have started in Mystic but her heart will always be in New York.
