I think I read somewhere that they couldn’t figure out her design for a while and basically went “why not fully embrace anime” (which honestly they did..... pretty lazily). I think I also read?? A couple things about how she is literally a concoction of a bunch of racist stereotypes (from Asian American commentators). Overall: lazy, hedging on racist, probably won’t age well (which is the least of its problems)
the original peni parker was originated by a white dude (ger/ard way), so it’s not like the comic version is above reproach. japanese-american schoolgirl who operates a mech? maybe should’ve had a japanese-american creative on that one, marvel.
here’re some unique, not racist things about peni (in the spider-verse movie):
younger than all the other spider-people
has a psychic connection to a spider
has a legacy connection to her dead father, who was clearly very important to her
but with one exception (her scene in the finale, which felt rushed and shoehorned in due to the character’s lack of direction) the movie pushed the whole “kawaii” anime mech-operating schoolgirl thing, and they didn’t even do much with that.
the anime design for peni is bad, straight up. it’s a notable weak spot in the movie. her hair design is lazy and awkward, her features don’t sit right on her face, and if they were going to go anime they should’ve gone more 2D than that. they could’ve incorporated more tricks and quirks of japanese animation.
