My father, Socheytha Kok painted this Cambodian girl. I noticed that the women in his paintings all looked similar. When I asked him why they all look the same he explained that he painted them to look like the most beautiful person he knew, my mom.

Seriously, shooting pics in direct sunlight ☀️☀️ is quite difficult. Most shaduws are too harsh. With this one i tried to avoid it and waited until the sun got low. ▪️▪️⚫️ APRIL 17th ⚫️▪️▪️ (1975) it’s been 43 years since 3 million of my people were murdered by the communist regime the Khmer Rouge... the first to face execution were artists, intellectuals... anyone with the power of influence was targeted and slaughtered by means of torture and famine. This dark moment in history was not very long ago and so it leaves me feeling so many emotions with memories that are not mine and yet they are. My people have suffered so much and my parents have sacrificed their livelihood in Cambodia so my siblings and I could thrive here. I am a Cambodian American artist and I was raised by refugees!!! We survived and we will thrive!
