Decapocember Day 8: There are many crustaceans called "shrimp," but those of the infraorder Caridea are true shrimp (even if some have the word "prawn" in their common names). The most distinctive feature of carideans is that the second abdominal segment overlaps the first and third segments. Many shrimp also have a "caridean bend," so their abdomens aren't straight.

I love this fish so much. I'm surprised because azure and blue damselfish were not on any lists of species recommended for nano tanks, but they both stay under three inches and don't need to be with other fish so that's why I chose one. They're also one of the hardiest and cheapest saltwater fish. This azure damsel was only $12 and it was captive bred. And it's so pretty, I love the blue and yellow coloration. I should name it but I don't know the gender yet.

My first reef tank! I added the animals yesterday and so far everyone is doing well. The cycling process was accelerated with seachem stabilizer beforehand. The fish is an azure damselfish and the inverts are a camel shrimp, a dwarf zebra hermit crab, and a nassarius snail. I also have fern feather macroalgae planted and ordered some red gracilaria. No corals yet. When I get the time to go to Absolutely Fish I'm going to get a pulsing xenia at the very least, and maybe a Kenya tree. I can't get any leather or mushroom corals because the camel shrimp might eat them.

Camel or halfbeak shrimp!

These guys are just plain awesome. They look really neat, with their striking patterns and sharp color. They - like many other shrimp - like to have plenty of hiding places to tuck into, especially rock overhangs and/or caves.

Then again, I am a big believer that most (if not all) specimens are going to fare better when offered plenty of places to hide and seek refuge. I also find that you ironically SEE animals more when you offer them plenty of cover. My cousin shared this axiom with me when I was about 12 or 13, and I have found it to hold true in the vast majority of situations I’ve encountered in the near twenty years since.

Use caution with adding these guys to reef aquaria. Many have found them to be quite reef safe, while others have documented damaging behavior. =/
